The flippers of my house took out a wall, hid electrical wires in the floor, and covered the room in carpet. I've walked on and shampoo'd over live wires for 10 years! Now all exposed and floor socket added, time to get this hardwood floor to beauty. Thanks for your video and at 65...yes I can!
I just removed the peninsula out of the kitchen for my wife, and am now put to the task to do exactly this. I have more square footage to cover, but THIS answered all of my questions, short and sweet. Thanks for the upload!
Great video. I have this exact problem I have been staring at for too long. It didn’t look like something I could diy but after watching your tutorial it doesn’t seem so daunting. Thanks.
I had a large skinny spot to patch. Old 1940 floor had cut nails. I ended up routing a notch into the old boards and then turned all the new ones sideways. Didn't have to worry about removing and stagering into the old.
Cool brother that looks good really appreciate that that's exactly what I needed to see before I do it myself I'm a plumber hating an air and electrical guy so I don't no much about flooring
Great video! I need to do the same thing but where the removed original wall was prior to the remodel the wall foot print is flush with the existing original hard wood flooring. I am stuck not knowing what needs to be done to remove the wall stud to the recessed depth of the existing hardwood floors. Any advice would be appreciated.
What ga nails are you using in your nailer? It might seem like a stupid question but you're using salvage flooring and I imagine it's pretty brittle compared to new. I was just wondering if you had any trouble with pieces splitting when you nailed them. Thank you.
great video and nice details. Curious why you didn't replace the underlayment? Also, Is it a good idea to strip the finish as step one -- especially when trying to re-use flooring? just curious...
You need to use a mallet and 15 gauge staples/16 gauge cleats to nail solid wood, also liquid nail and top nail last rows, white wood glue between glue in lace in
Great video! This is what I am wanting to do in my house too! Any chance you have a video of the floor once the sanding and restraining is done that we can see?
@@TheFixerHomeRepair thank you so much! What a lovely job! You have convinced me to do the same with my home instead of doing something else #savethehardwood
@@TheFixerHomeRepair awesome! I was wondering if it was. My husband now watches your videos too. 😁 I kept sharing your videos and now we talk about what you have done to your house and what we have done to ours. We finally replaced our front windows of our house. We've been living here since 1996. My youngest son's window at the top had an arch to it and when it was taken down it was held in with huge staples and two small screws!! 😯😯😯 We have no idea how it stayed up there so long like that. It's so much quieter in the house and we found out one of the windows wasn't insulated in at all. It was causing our electric bill to be high and we wondering why that room was always so hot. Oh the joy of finding out the surprises when working on your house. Hahahahaha! 😆😆😆
Great video, I’m doing the same thing. Can you please tell me the best way to get those old thick nails out of the subfloor? I was thinking I would need a grinder and metal cutting blade to cut them flush. Did you just use a hammer to pull them out easily? Thanks again for your help
Hey! i typically use a huge crowbar to yank them out but you can also just hammer them in or smash them until they break. Thanks for checking out the video!!
yes the 4' x 4' section of flooring he replaced will not have moldy paper underneath so it will certainly fail, you idiot! Stop trolling people giving advice.
I like that you edited the video and did the fast forward thing. So many people don't do that and its annoying. Overall, a good video and I also like how to show how you choose where to cut the old boards to work in the new ones. Not many videos show that. A few bits of feedback - what nails did you use? Also, you don't show how to install the last piece by trimming off part of the groove. I have seen other people glue down that last piece. One thing I have seen others do it cut the wood with a circular saw to help get the old pieces out.
Thanks so much for the comment! I used 2 1/2 inch 15 gauge angled finish nails. Yeah I suppose I could have gone into more detail about the last piece. I did not glue the piece but you most certainly can. I just face nail it to allow for any minor movement it might have with heat, cold, and humidity levels. I find that a circular saw works well when you are tearing out old floor with the repair section that is wedged between the old floor. Fortunately this was between the old floor and a wall so it worked out where I didn't need to use a circular saw. This is all great feedback. Thanks for watching and be sure to subscribe if you like my content for more videos like this!!
what type of nailer are you using? it doesn't look like a flooring nailer. I thought it was hard to get the nails angled right without that big shoe alignment thing, but you're making it look easy. years of experience, or is it really not that tough?
Hey Manuel! This is a finish nailer. If you angle it the right way it attaches the boards in the same way as a floor nailer. Thanks for the comment and for checking out the video!
Hey Brianna, I think I explained it but yes I cut the bottom part of the groove side off. Then you can just glue it and drop it in. Fill it and finish. Thanks for checking out the video. I really appreciate it!

Great to hear! Happy to help! Good luck!
Thank you. Very nice to watch before I do this myself. Builds the confidence!

Great job , you can’t tell it’s been patched !👏👏

Well done - the floor AND instructional

Those flooring boards are thicker than home owners think they are. That is a strong for system for ya
FABULOUS! Thank you for sharing this information 😅👌

Your the man sir! Thanks for this
Nice. Will cutting the tongue and groove off the ends cause the boards to not stay down properly?
He should have used wood glue, liquid nails, at the joints.
Good video 👍🏼
What kind of saw is that that you used to cut out the old floor around 4:34?
Unbelievable video. Thank you!
I hope it helps. Thanks for watching!
Awesome job!
Thanks for the video. Very helpful. Cheers
Awesome. Really hope it helps! Thanks for the comment, Samuel!
Thanks!! Great video other hackers just put a board in perpendicular lol
If you make a cut down the middle of each piece you are removing then you can remove the pieces easier.
Great video 👍

So, I have to do this, but neither side is near a wall. Like ten feet away in both directions. Would you still tear out all the way to a wall, or no?
If you'd use a 1 1/4 bit and put a pipe in the hole, you can knock the pieces out flush. Great work, though, brother.
Nice man, thanks
No problem! Hope the video helps!

@thefixer, just saw this video and it is a tremendous help. Thank you for always explaining in terms that I can understand. Which room is this?
Hey Georgia! Happy to hear! This is the master bedroom. I filmed this video in the middle of the remodel.

nice job but why didn't you put the vapor barrier back?
where is the felt and why didnt u glue the but joints? can cause squeaks without subfloor glue.
Great video -Thank you Much..

Yes I know, Michael. I need to get better at that. Thanks for checking out the video!
This really is helping my DIY repair. At 8:32 I see nails being used and then tapped manually. What type of nail did you use there?
Knowledgable carpenter, except for one thing----you should have put down paper as a buffer to prevent squeaks.
I have the exact same scenario
Hope the video helps!
Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!
Should have replaced the felt slip sheet before installing the new floor boards.

May I ask how much you charge for doing that?
Hi! Are you based in FL?? I need to hire someone to do this
I couldn’t of done it better myself haha
Whats name of tool you use to cut hardwood? You should put in description.
It's an oscillating Multi-Tool.
What kind of nailer are you using?
Hey Manuel! This is a finish nailer. If you angle it the right way it attaches the boards in the same way as a floor nailer. Thanks for the comment and for checking out the video!
How much real time did it take to do this? I have an area 1/3 that size that needs same fix. Wondering how long a pro would take/ charge me. Thanks!
This probably took me 2 or 3 hours.
The Fixer thank you so much!
My question is how did you get the last piece in? Did you have to cut the groove off? I don't think that was explained, sorry if I missed it.

Awesome. Thanks for checking my videos out!
There have been several ask what type of saw you used to cut the existing floor but no replies. Inquiring minds want to know.
Hey! I think I replied to a few, sorry. 😁. I used a “multi tool” aka an “oscillating tool”. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!
@@TheFixerHomeRepair Thanks. The tool you used seems to have a head that can rotate 90 degrees, making it much easier to make that cut.
