    Wow, I consider myself to be a rather critical person at times but my winter hat is off to this game.
    And if anyone is still watching their way through the video, the wow moment for me didn't come until around the 41 minute mark!
    The fact the animals do not restock each year is amazing. Not only does it show the notion of over-hunting but it really empowers the resource of horses within the game. In the first round, movement didn't feel very important but the more you hunt in the game the more you will need horses for movement; it just feels very thematic and very dynamic.
    On the flipside of that praise, I couldn't help but wonder though if the exploration track could be tackled similar to the bookeeping track in Mombasa?! I would love to be able to collect a few animals and then scream down the track in one fell swoop. It could be balanced in that you still only get to choose one bonus.

    cool game. Although i do feel bad about the animal hunting. Also at the end, I think you had forgotten that you could now hunt from adjacent locations, so it wouldn't make much sense to not move twice, as it would give you more hunting options, and it would get you closer to deeper territories. Also, it does seem like being the first player gives a big advantage.

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  3 года назад

      first player having to hunt for the lesser value animals (giving later players access to the higher value ones) does offset player order :)

    Hey, what happens when you reach the furtherst area of the board and still have turns in the same year?

    • @rahdo

      you simply skip the "must move at the start of your turn" part of your turn

    Question: When checking for the preferred fur to take a bonus main action, are you allowed to check for the preferred fur of another territory if you own an outpost there?

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  3 года назад

      yes, iirc that's the way it goes (but i don't have the rulebook to double confirm, but i'm pretty confident that's right)

    im so confused.... so let's say my cossac walks 2 spaces, i hunt (and hunt again paying a coin) then i can do another silver action (like hunting a third time), and then u pay the region's fur and do a golden action? so ultimately with a coin and a matching fur i can move and do 3 actions.... no?

      @@rahdo no worries. The KS took ages to arrive and with the component drama and weird theme (lack of a better word) it was hard to find somebody who wanted to play it.

    I, similiar to you Rahdo, play board games almost excusively with 2 players and this one seems to tick all the boxes to me and my wife. To the point where Im considering backing my first ever KS project. I do have one concern however. It seems that altough we have so many different actions to take each turn, it all comes down to one - hunting. You need to hunt, and hunt heavy in order to win. There are no other real paths to victory. Is that really the case? I do understand that hunting is a core of this game, but would like to See a bit more of variety in the strategy rather than picking your next move solely based on hunting options.

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  3 года назад +2

      hunting grounds eventually dry up since they don't refill, so the market is a totally valid alternate way to go. spend an action hunting a single fur, or collecting the horses to trade for that fur in the market. no doubt that early on, there's a lot of hunting to kickstarter the game, but as it goes on it gets tougher to reach the hunting grounds. but furs are effectively money in this game, and yeah, you need "money" to do just about anything :)

  • @nivekogn
    @nivekogn 3 года назад

    I was wondering how the turns change in the 4th year. Is the a major scarcity of fur? Are you forced more towards the other actions?

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  3 года назад

      yes, exactly, fur gets scarcer and horses become more important. but at the same time, with fewer animals on a given tile, the cheaper it is to buy, so that can bring more furs in closer, depending on what players focus on

    • @nivekogn
      @nivekogn 3 года назад

      @@rahdo does it get more, less interesting? What’s your take on how the game evolves as the furs become more scarce and your options become more limited? Does the “engine-building” offset the scarcity?
      Also, have you played with 3 or 4 players? What’s your sense on how it plays at those player-counts?
      I’m quite interested in this game and just want to know more. I love your videos!

    • @rahdo
      @rahdo  3 года назад

      @@nivekogn only played with 2p, so can't comment on higher player count unfortunately. if you want to get a sense for the later game, you could check out gaming rules' playthrough of the full game here: ruclips.net/video/y9hxol0MhVA/видео.html it's a solo game, but the "ivan" player does a good job of replicating a 2nd player's effect :)

    Regarding the 'goof' marked in the Klingon subtitles at the 19:53 timestamp with "It's 1 coin, not 2", I think it's not an actual goof. Richard is referring to how using the fox for a silver action would provide 2 bonuses i.e. 2x 1 coin, 2x 2 music, et cetera. If it's indeed allowed to choose the same bonus twice, he's correct, right?

    • @PauloRenato23
      @PauloRenato23 3 года назад +2

    a snooze-fest mish-mash of mechanisms and fiddly rules. Steding should just look to his masterpiece Hansa Teutonica for inspiration and incorporate the principals that make that game great into his future designs

      and yet i would play stroganov 7 days a week over hansa teutonica! although of course steading's true masterpiece is staufer dynasty (then gugong, then fierenze, then norenberc, then HT, and then all the other lesser known titles that i haven't actually played) :)

    • @WhatsDaveUpTo
      @WhatsDaveUpTo Год назад

      @@rahdo With all due respect, but didnt you make a video about the game where you said you played it with your wife and didn't like it? Well, thats not a surprise because Hansa Teutonica is NOT, and never was, a two player game. The two player mode was shoe-horned into the original release by the publisher...to sell more copies of course. But now with the Big Box edition, the box clearly says 3-5 players. Pegasus Spiele didn't even include a two player mode. If there's one game that deserves another play by you its HT at the proper player count. The new Big Box also includes multiple maps, and some extra, small, optional, modules. SU&SD called it "Perhaps the most fun Euro ever made", Wendy and Chris Yi of the Dice tower, recently rated it at number 11 of their top 100 favorite games of all time. The game is an anxious nail biter from start to finish.

      i did film the newer 2p version of the rules from britannia expansion, and in that video i said the original 2p system was terrible while the new one is good and playable. i wouldn't want to play HT mostly because it's too confrontational between players, but i've always felt it was a brilliant design and have never said anything contrary to that).
