The fact that he believed he wasn't a hero because there were children he wasn't able to save shows just how humble and selfless this man was. It was a shame he had to die so soon after having his hard work realized.
He lived for another 27 years after his wife found his stuff in the attic in 1988. He died in 2015, aged 105 I think. There's a British Show called That's Life who reunited him with the children around that time. I think that would have been enough for him, rather than being remembered by CBS.
He was invited to the that's life show not knowing that his story would be told and that every single person in the audience was there thanks to him as we're the children he had saved on the trains(kindertransports)&the children of the children that no doubt would not of survived the war.A true hero and a gentleman saying what he did should not of been recognised.
Men like him are the saints who show us that even in great darkness, the light still shines. God bless him. Though I hang my head in shame that the USA did not accept any of these children...
@@markharrison2544 without stalin nazi's would've took USSR and get their hands on big reserves of oil and tank factories and soldiers then they would attack America with japan and other from europe.
Why do I have to choke back the tears? Is it the humility of this man, the inhumanity of the Nazis, the persistence of antisemitism and general racism? And, yes, why do 'politicians' win peace prizes for achieving the expected, while mere citizens are passed over for achieving the extraordinary? In an imperfect world from time to time we're granted a glimpse of perfection. R.I.P. Sir Nicholas.
The fact that no one ever talked about the goodness they have done, just shows that people were doing it with their heart back then🧡my nan was saved too by a family and brought to Romania where she got treated for all the injuriea she had and health issues🥰she is currently still alive and has beena widow for 13 years. She raised a total of 137 children and now she is looking after my sisters kids😩🥰we are her great great grand kids her name is Maria filofteea
I love the fact not one or two but dozens of the children came back to honor and respect him. No one he was so teary eyed. They kids sure were special and it’s a shame all of them could not be rescued like he tried to do. Sir Winston, you did well sir and I hope you are at peace. You are the definition of a hero ❤
When you have a true and selfless hero among your midst he's very difficult to see, his compassion, empathy and humility throws a blanket of invisibility over his brave soul because he seeks no fame!
Heroes don't wear capes...they wear big glasses and tell the world in typical british self deprecating manner that "maybe I shouldn't have lived so long if I had known that people would make such a fuss"...thank you Sir Winton, for all you have done, and may you rest in eternal peace.
This kinda brought tears to my eyes guys comeon have respect for ur elders knowing tht our troops our soldiers tht fought for so many years in so many wars trying to save our country this guy is a true hero but he did wat he thought it was the right thing to do wat he did god blessh im tho theirs not many wwii soldiers left in this world but we all salute to them knowing tht they served our country..tht was so sad tho hearin his voice his story tho ..
Buongiorno! Riposi in pace signor Winton!
He is so humble that he did not tell anyone for fifty years, even his wife and says that everyone is exaggerating. What a true hero and inspirational man.
There’s no one and nobody can do what this person done.I just hope there’s a show for his life and teach to the children on how selfless this person is
My grandfather should have the same honor given to him that s what he did saved families from prague but if not to the world he was a hero to me for helping
He's one of two sides of the coin. Nicholas Winton did everything he could do to help save as many children before the horrors of war were on their doorstep. Oskar Schindler did everything he could to shield as many of the would be victims he could from a terrible fate. Both men are heroes who deserve their names to live on and inspire future generations forever.
Always makes me think, what gives "ordinary" people the drive to be so heroic...... and on the flipside, why do some become so inhuman that people like Sir Nick have to act. The world is weird, but thankfully every now and then, a true humanitarian hero turns up
I didn't keep it a secret.. I didn't talk about it...... He must have had the best father and best mother who could put such value and attitude in thier child.
Sad the United States couldn't take in a few people to let them potentially live great lives. Like they already had their family ripped apart from them. Thank you to the great British across the pond. I really do love the British.
I am ashamed of my country. The U.S. wasn't in as bad a state as Great Britain was. This was during the war and during rationing and everything else, and yet Britain opened their doors and the U.S. would not. I am seriously sickened by that fact. We had more than enough resources to help those children and yet we did nothing. Tired of people going on and on about how great the U.S. is. Truth be told, when faced with a challenge, we're often the first to look away or back down. Anyone who says differently is clearly not fully aware of reality.
Actually this was before the war, not during it. Nicholas Winton had another train with 250 children due to leave Prague on 1st September 1939, the day war broke out - unfortunately none of them made it :( The British government wasn’t entirely altruistic - Winton had to put up a bond of £50 for each child, supposedly to ensure that they went back when the danger was past; this was a lot of money - my dad was a 20-year old farm worker at the time, and earned £1 a week. There are now statues honouring Nicholas Winton on the platform at Prague Main railway station (hlavni nadrazí), and at London Liverpool Street Station, where the children arrived.
he should win the noble hero prize...he didn't try get peace between the allies and the axis....i love obama but he increase the war, including more bomb droning, obama did many great things, but he shouldn't have gotten a prize for peace
2 D What did Obama do to get the nobel prize? Became the first president who wasn't white. That's it. That's all. What did Sir Nicholas Winton do that should have earned him a Nobel Peace Prize? Saved all those children, broke laws to do so, risked his life and in saving these children ensured that they would go on to have children of their own and so on. Over 6,000 people alive today are here because of that man, they're the descendants of the original children Sir Winton saved, their children, grandchildren, great grandchildren who now have nieces, nephews, cousins etc etc. The Nobel Peace Prize should go to people who have truly done something beyond the norm, not simply did their job and became a political leader, something he wanted and chose to do anyway. Compare what Obama did, to what Sir Nicholas Winton did and tell me how he (Obama) deserved a Nobel Peace Prize yet Sir Winton never received one? Any honest person would agree there is no comparison and that Obama receiving one is a bit of a joke really.
It shows that only people who brag about their good deeds get recognized. THIS is sadly true. Nicholas however, what a guy; and yet people would rather call 'Bruce Jenner' and a random 'football/soccer player' a 'hero'. What a ridiculous society we live in...
"I didnt keep it a secret i just didnt talk about it" what a guy.
Different breed back then

One of the heros...but sadly history forgot the others..
Doreen Warriner
Trevor Chadwick
Chris Maxwell
Margaret dougan
And others..
So soon? We British knew in the 80s. The Czech way before.
Should be made into a movie, so his story will never be forgotten.
It is a movie in Czech Republic
It won’t be forgotten
There is a movie,named Nikki's family or Nikki's children.
I saw it..
It's sort of a documentary.
In the Czech Republic we have a movie about him.

Just think for every one of those people who stood up how many children they had.
In 2014, it was estimated that over 15,000 people exist today directly because of him.
