It's crazy to think that some Nazi war criminals only did 10, 12 years in prison. But he spent his life behind bars.

I agree. I'm not defending Hess but unless you got a death sentence, very few served out their sentences. Erich Raeder was sentenced t life in prison but was released 9 years later in 1955. Walther Funk was sentenced to life in prison but was released in 1957 after 12 years. It was rare that someone served their entire sentence but they had a hard on for Hess even though he spent most of the war in a Brittish prison. There is something rotten in Denmark here.

Interesting and informative. Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it !

He may have been crazy but no fool. He was the highest ranking Nazi official who escaped the hangman’s noose.

Regardless of what atrocities are attributed to the Hitler regime.....I find it odd that Hess was charged at the Nuremberg trials with all manner of N-A-Z-I era crimes against humanity....as pretty much 80-90% of the time when these occured.... he was instead in British captivity ( 1941-on). The level of punishnment was either more or less severe for others at Nuremberg when viewing their own actions during the war... so why the severe level for him? His death is also very suspicious as it seems "some entity" wanted him to take certain secrets to his grave....no?

Exactly! Why was he held in prison for so many years when others who were actually involved in the atrocities released? For God's sake, the entire Spandau prison was kept open to house this one prisoner until his death! Since he was on a 'peace' mission to Great Britain, was it because he had information that may have embarrassed the British government? Information that may have shown the war could have been either avoided or at least made less costly? I don't know, but it still seems strange that a man who was not there for the "final solution' should have paid a greater price than many of those who were.

Rudolph Hess is one of Churchills greater shames. Hitler never wanted war with England and this man’s sacrifice proves all.

I think his sentence was overkill compared to others. He bailed I believe for other reason as well unknown to history.
