    Frank Grimes is definitely different from anyone else on the list. While some of them come down to turning into gags or behind the eightball as the plot dictates, Frank is designed for the most brutal (and early) self satire the show has ever put itself through. He was meant as a commentary on how Homer became the show's star since season 3 and how so many episodes since then had him stumble onto lucky situations and how the audience constantly roots for him despite the fact he should never be a role model. Frank is a hard working underdog who struggled in life, someone who in real life you'd root for, but he's driven towards jealousy, bitterness, and finally madness by Homer's constant stupidity. At least on his end, without getting to know him. And other than a few misunderstandings caused by Homer, the rest of the coworkers don't antagonize him until he has that grudge. The reason we aren't supposed to like the character or even say that he's completely right about everything (he is) is because he hates the guy we're supposed to love. That said, Skinner isn't on the list? He's apparently even more of a doormat than Flanders.

    • @philw3039
      @philw3039 Год назад +14

      Agree. The ironic thing is that earlier seasons portrayed Homer as the down-on-his-luck underdog. He never had the extreme levels of bad luck Grimes did, but the show emphasized he was constantly struggling at life. Grimes's dislike of Homer was basically mirrors Homer's original dislike of Ned Flanders (before it was changed to Ned's overbearing religiousness). As for Skinner, I'd say he doesn't kicked around by life in general (though he went through a lot in Vietnam) it's more like he's a punching bag for a few select people: his mother, Superintendent Chalmers and Bart. Although for Bart I think it's questionable since Skinner causes Bart almost as much grief as Bart causes him and they also have moments where they get along.

      IMO Grimes is a poke at the "smart people" audience who can relate to the "I did all this work, but I have utter contempt for my slack-jaw yokel co-workers who do everything to avoid work". Things are never that black and white, but having worked in an "escalations" help desk at a call center, it became immediately obvious how many employees do fake-it-till-you-make-it competency and just repeatedly hand off work that is "hard" to someone else given that option. As long as your KPI (Key Performance Indicators) are good, nobody cares how poor your actual work is.
      I would not agree that Homer has life set to easy mode, but I would agree that if the Power Plant was run competently (with no billionaires), Homer would have never been hired, and nor would most of the people we see at the power plant. In a real world, "Homer" would likely be working at the Kwik-e-mart or as the greeter at Sprawl-mart, and Marge would be the one making money (as she has proven to be too honest for both Law Enforcement and Real Estate, despite not being trained in either.) I actually think Marge, had she not been pigeon-holed to "Housewife", would probably do well just writing books, as that would let the show runners to keep letting her stay in her role.

    • @mightyfilm
      @mightyfilm Год назад +6

      @ahhthatsjustgrand6502 I think the difference is between the two shows. Homer is lovable, even when he strangles Bart. Peter started out lovable enough as a struggling dad that's mind is clouded in pop culture, but then they basically gagged him to death so everyone in the show is either a sociopath or somehow an annoying old lady. Still, Frank Grimes was basically there to put Homer in his place as the show's head protagonist, but also kind of mocking the audience if they dared question how he bumbles about through life and somehow meets every celebrity. And this is "early" Simpsons before everything was the 5th dimensional meta irony that enveloped the series just years later.

      You can be on Homer's side, since he did try to make peace, inviting Frank to dinner. Bury the hatchet, as they say.
      You can also understand Frank's frustration, knowing the Safety Inspector is a dope who has no idea what he's doing.
      Many of us would probably be put off by someone like Homer in real life. At work, or somewhere else.

He complains about how the system rewards the stupid and ignores the hard workers, but instead of taking it up with THE SYSTEM - Mr. Burns would be a good starting point 😒- he spends all of his energy trying to convince people that HE should be rewarded by the system instead. Frank's a minnow and Homer is like a trout or something, but Grimes doesn't once consider that the sharks at the top are the real problem.

I feel like everyone else on the list at least has some agency, like we at least see them _try_ to turn things around for the better but Moleman always just feels totally helpless and resigned to his fate. Worse, nobody even really seems to realize Hans Moleman is even a person. Homer laughing at him getting hit in the groin with a football is actually a highlight for Moleman because it's one of the few times someone actually acknowledges his existence. Moleman exists purely to suffer and we love him for it.

    Moleman is the slapstick comedy "we just need a good laugh" punching bag, Gill is the "we need a guy whose just always down on his luck" punching bag, and Moe is the "ya know, his life is going too good" punching bag. The different fields, but they are the best of the best in their fields.

    Edna Krabappel is one in my view considering her luck with me, until she got her happy ending by marrying Ned Flanders (yet another one in my opinion what with so many wives dying on him as well as Honer always taking advantage of him).
    Also, I'd put Sideshow Bob there since he ended up turning to a life of crime because of Krusty's abuse that kept landing him behind bars.
    Lastly, I'd say Scratchy is a contender as well

    I feel like Gil filled the void left behind by Lionel Hutz (RIP Phil Hartman). I fact, I think Gil's first episode (Realty Bites) was Hutz's last.
