There's this occasional wave of dorky, fashionable contrarians who make a sport of tearing down Ocarina.
And its legacy is still intractable.
They like to opine that "hur dur it's dated".
As if thirty years should be kind of any game, yet; reflection on Ocarina, in the current light of design strengths, only serves to make Ocarina ever more incredible, for what it accomplished then, and the extents to which it's still more brilliant than the contenders of the modern landscape.

    • @H-TownGamer
      @H-TownGamer 3 месяца назад +1

@@pathogeneration5138 that is very true, I think it gets those waves of hate because of jealousy. Imagine you have a favorite game you think is best and maybe it even does have high ratings and paise and then Ocrina comes along from 20 years ago with the highest score to ever exist on a video game. It’s only logical the only way to justify their favorites are better is to try to bring the best game down. In a way I kind of get it because what game could possibly be that great? It’s one of those things you’ll only understand once you play it
      - few very things are the best I honestly couldn’t tell you what’s the best movie ever or best car ever but the best video game is pretty agreed upon an that’s Ocrina. It’s just so rare on so many levels even outside gaming

My first experience with Ocarina of Time was in 2002 at 12 years old when I got a GameCube for Christmas. It came bundled with a disc containing all the Zelda games released to that point and even a demo of Windwaker. I fell in love with Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask because they were unlike any other video game I had ever played and that's how I became a Zelda fan.

How crazy is it that strangers from the other side of the world can have pretty much the same childhood memories. Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask were just everything to me as a kid. First played OoT at a neighbor’s place when I was like 8, and it left a lasting mark. Going from 'ALink to the past" on SNES, to Oot N64 was a leap in gaming and tech that will forever be unique to the generation of gamers who witnessed it back then. I loved everything about the original Oot, from the animations to the graphical style. I know it’s rather nitpicky, but I loved the original so much that the small changes to Link’s run and roll animations in the 3DS remasters just didn’t sit right with me, which was ultimately the reason why I never bought the game. Just booted up the original I bought on that retro Wii shop instead. Crazy how these games still hit after all these years

Still my favour game of all time followed by the original and now prophetic, Deus Ex.
I remember playing it for the first time at Christmas 1998. How heavy the cartridge was compared with Goldeneye and the almost weightless Mario64. Kakoriko forest, the Giant Deku tree the danger of the Lost Woods. Getting my first sword, leaving for Hyrule field. Growing up and growing back. And the music. Oh my, the music. The level design, the puzzles. How the Water Temple broke me and I had to consult a gaming magazine for a walkthrough (no internet access to look it up and probably few if any sites dealing with this at that time).
I consider that game to be elevated to work of art status and judging by metacritic and this video, I'm probably not alone.
Yes, it defined my childhood too and I cried when I finished it despite being almost an adult.

Yeah I started playing through it in 2022 managed to get to the point where Link turned into an adult but I had to stop playing because I was so fed up with the constant lack of direction. For me it went like I was having fun for a little, then 20 minutes later I got stuck and couldn't figure out what to do to progress, spent 1-2 hours trying to figure out what to do, eventually gave up and googled it, thought to myself "wow that was really stupid and I wouldn't have figured it out in a million years" then rinse and repeat the whole process over and over and over again through the entire game. I've never been more frustrated with a game before in my entire life but I do plan to revisit it and finish it before the end of the year even if I have to strictly follow a guide just so I can say I did it.

I was just thinking about this game today, because it does something I think goes under-appreciated. While many games use a similar targeting system today, this game (and MM) does something different by tying that targeting system to a character on screen. By doing this, the game allows for a few subtle, but convenient functions.
For enemy encounters, especially keese (bats), you may not see the enemy, because it's above you, but if Navi flies up off your screen, you can target it and take it out easily, without having to look around for it.
For puzzle-solving/exploration, Navi will jump to points of interest and change color, giving you a hint on how to proceed. She might jump to something you can interact with, or call out a place to play a song.
Anyway, convenient timing for this to pop up in my algorithm. Personally I can't play the 3DS version because I absolutely can't stand that forward roll animation (I'm weird). As for the original game, I do think the original N64 stick is the best for precision aiming, but it's absolutely worth playing any way you can. It's definitely constantly jockeying for position in my top 5 games of all time.

I used to watch a lot of ranking videos of the Zelda games, and Ocarina of Time took the top on almost all of them. I hadn't played the game in such a long time and I actually got annoyed hearing people talk so much about the game; I even began to slander it as the worst game in the series because of that. It was stupid of me, of course, and I realized that when I finally gave the game another shot. I actually enjoyed it, but there was still some lingering bias that I had against it. Now in 2024, I've finally started another playthrough, completely unbiased.
My statement: it's one of the best games I've ever played.

OoT was the very firts game I asked for in my life, and every next game has been compared to it... It's hard to label it as the best game ever, but it's a damn masterpiece and nothing compared to it

It's a tragedy that you finished the game so many times without a full playthrough, kinda takes the magic out of it. Especially doing it finally on the handheld. Try a full run on GameCube or n64 man

Been loving the n64 port on the switch but man I would happily pay $100 for a 3ds port on the switch. Not gonna buy a whole system just for the upsacaled version. Shrug. Soooo good though.

I’ve tried to emulate this game a few times and every time I tried the game would crash after the first level. Sadly I’ve still never played this game.

You could try playing the PC Port Ship of Harkinian and use "Djipi's 3DS Experience" and "Playas 3DS Adult and Young Link" Mods from Gamebanana to make your game look more like the 3DS version.

I know everyone praises the 3ds version, but I never was able to play it, and secondly, when I did lay my eyes on it years ago I gagged at the sight of the intended designs of the characters. Personally thought, and still do, that it was best that they were left as concept art, because man do the characters intended art style look ugly in the updated game🤣
Also didn't like link's sluggish feet movements. I'm honestly mixed in views over the 3ds version. It's definitely fine on a gameplay aspect, but this more so has to do with a preference. If I played a game on a true console, why would I want to play it on a handheld? I already got (had), the original version, (lost it eventually), why would I want this? Give me a N64 and I can slap in the catridge and start playing. Squinting or bending over to play a game had been unappealing to me for a while. It wasn't until I got a smartphone/android where I could play emulators, that I got used to it, but it really isn't the same as laying back on a couch and playing a game on your TV. At the time handheld gaming was really just an extra thing Nintendo could make some extra dimes from, the games were eithet good to mostly on sale games you'd find laying around by the dozens in a pile at a store. For every good game on a handheld, there were hundreds of 3rd party games you weren't going to buy yourself, but only got because someone bought it for you as a gift. Sure some of them were somewhat entertaining, but man were most of them forgettable. Like Space Invaders Extreme, nobody besides myself and the few who can, actually remembers that from the DS games. It was fun, but only so far as a mobile game is today. It's just for a brief moment, and a rare few can actually get your attention to where you'd actually spend hours on it. The latter of course being the games Nintendo and its subsidiaries produced themselves.

Textures, character models - everything looks better but I don't know why they went for that bright and colorful look in the 3D version... it really destroys the atmosphere. I think everyone really enjoyed the dark atmosphere in Zelda OOT + MM back then. They probably tried to attract younger generations with the 3D version 😑
