The Beatles and The Rooftop Gig: Part 1 - Live Shows in 1968?

- The Beatles' January 30, 1969 rooftop gig is unforgettable. But what led up to it is a story on its own.
In this two-part series, we’re exploring why and how they ended up on the roof, as opposed to anywhere else.
This video, Part 1, details what the band was up to after the release of the White Album. Late 1968 live concerts by The Beatles were - unbelievably - partially planned and publicly discussed. The shows never happened, but - as explained here - they were the foundation for the Get Back sessions and rooftop concert.
Part 2 is here: • The Beatles and The Ro...

Maybe you. I prefer the american groups and music. Muchbetter and more creative.
@@petersclafani4370 Many/most of the big US bands of the time acknowledged The Beatles as a main influence, and likewise, The Beatles fully declared their debt to, and and admiration of, US artistes.
@@Westwoodii i agree. But in my opinion there were many outstanding groups and the songs were much better. Where they continued love songs and lyrics of times the beatle music n lyrics were that good. That why Americans were turning to American artist. Competition for the beatles were high thats why they had to come up with hit songs. Then sgt. Pepper came out. It was after that the beatles were in down fall. They threaten to break up etc. You know the story each member failed to show up.
I think the roof top is something so special that we still talk today and they chose London because like me they English. I was 6 in 1969 two things I rember from this year. Neil Armstrong and Beatles roof top concert. Beautiful memories.
I can't believe just how long ago this all was and in just how few years they produced this massive amount of ingenious music. Today it's an album every other year, a tour every other year, even if the artists may have tons of more material on their hands.
The whole "Let It Be" method was a mistake. I know they owed United Artists one more film, and McCartney's idea about a series of surprise, filmed appearances at clubs around England was excellent. It would have been a great way for them to go out, but the other three were in knuckleheaded mode.
Bob Taylor Maybe they wanted to do one last gig without fans coming to close.
"Let It Be" highlighted the disintegration of the band. The end of The Beatles.
I think that’s more true of John than George or Ringo. John was in the midst of heroin addiction and Yoko driving a wedge between him and the other Beatles.
I want to believe Ringo would’ve gone along with any plans the others had, with George always being of the mentality of being open to performing, but not touring as they did during their heyday.
I think the stripped-down approach was a mistake. I think the band had gotten back to more of the traditional studio recording methods during the White Album, unlike most narratives have us believe, as evident from the new boxed set of outtakes.
I think had the focus on the Get Back project been more like tracks like I Me Mine and I’ve Got A Feeling, it could’ve worked. You could’ve had songs like Let It Be and Long and Winding Road, but going in saying there would be no overdubs or heavy production was limiting themselves.
They’d grown as songwriters and were writing more complex pieces. I think to use an antiquated approach used for simple (by comparison) arrangements like She Loves You on a song like Let It Be just doesn’t work. Less than a month later, they recorded songs like Ballad of John and Yoko, I Want You (She’s So Heavy), and George recorded demos for Something, All Things Must Pass, and Old Brown Shoe, so I just think Twickenham was a bad environment amidst the hostility in the air from Yoko being in the studio all the time, and as was reported, everybody was walking around on eggshells to not upset John.
Bob Taylor No they did not! No they didn't! No he did not! By the time they did LET IT BE there contact was over with UA! The Let it the movie is owned by Allen Cline not UA!
agreed
The fragmented state of affairs within The Beatles was raising already since 1968 and as Lennon said: "A slow death". They finally agreed on the rooftop gig, although new and revolutionary for the era, it was a very simple idea for the might of the Fab Four...
The Beatles' final live concert took place on 29 August 1966 at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, California
I think it was George, coming off stage from that show who said "Well, that's it. I'm not a Beatle anymore." He came to despise being seen as a Beatle, and especially the fans, touring, press and all the nonsense that came with it. Can you imagine a very private, gentle guy becoming one of the most famous people on earth? Amazing he came thru as solidly as he did.
Ringo wanted to do it in the road, but John was tripping and George Martin thought he might get hit by a car, so they were put safely on the roof.
Wrong story there. John wasn't tripping. He was on heroin at this pt. Acid was Sgt Pepper

Welcome back to Part 1 of the rooftop series! So glad it’s live again. Who’s watching for the first time? Say hi! 👋🏻 🎉
*_Hola!_*
Hello, good mini-doc
Nothing like the first time... ;)
Hi.
Hi.
The Simpsons parodied this in one episode, with a guest appearance (as himself) by George Harrison. Homer and his band played on the roof of Moe's Tavern. George climbed out of a limo, saw the concert and commented: "Been there, done that."
Don't forget the Beatles won an Oscar for this
They will always be fab. Indeed.
It was obvious that Paul´s musicianship drove him back on stage. But when watching the movie I had the impression that John and George were so much in opposition to him that they refused. In fact Paul was the last Beatle who instantly worked for the band and kept the old energy high. George felt like a misunderstood genius and John couldn´t stand the perception that he wasn´t the boss and driving force anymore.
The following Wings episode showed Paul´s desire to enjoy band life on tour - with a bus thru the UK and Europe just for the sake of playing music on stage. I can´t imagine John or George doing something similar.
@Haha Porter V
Can you read? Can you understand and interpret?
It seems not.
Both George and John played live on stage many times in the 70s and George toured. McCartney's Wings material pales in comparison to his Beatles compositions. Without John and George around Paul lost his lyrical edge in my humble opinion.
@@georgestevens1502 So what? Paul still wrote some real nice songs after the Beatles like My Love, Live And Let Die, Ebony And Ivory etc. - but it pales as his Beatles stuff was just so extraordinary and brilliant.
It´s documented in the Let It Be movie that playing live was an issue among the band members. Paul sympathized with the idea whereas George and John were not happy about it.
And - please - you can´t compare it - Paul encircled the earth numerous times with his live performances whereas George and John made just some shows. John´s concert in Toronto wasn´t even rehearsed with his band and subsequently sounded terrible. George had a peak in his creativeness right after the Beatles but that went to about zero afterwards and John even took long breaks in his musical activities. Paul was and still is the only hard working musician within the band. But he obviously is not the sort of impostor like John and to a certain degree George.
@@anonymusum You just proved my points. The songs you listed are weak lyrical and melodic efforts. I'll give you that Paul is a hard working commercial sellout. He's the imposter. He was my favorite Beatle until I saw the Let It Be movie first run in a theater and saw how conceited and condescending he was and still is. The Let It Be movie is not available commercially because Paul has shut it down for decades. He knows how badly he presented himself in the movie. Face it. Paul is a sell out commercially. George and John are the more substantial artists. Their songs are covered constantly including last night by Sheryl Crow doing Beware of Darkness for the Play On tv benefit concert, and during the London Olympics Imagine was the crowning performance of the ceremonies. The last time Paul's solo work was covered was by Axl Rose in the 80s. Paul's stuff is fading. George and John are the dudes who abide. Their lyrics and melodies are constantly reimagined by real artists. Wings is pseudo Beatles.
@@georgestevens1502
OK, I see - you are not a musician. Paul was the only professional in that movie. George was just a whiny band member whose whinyness didn´t bear any relation to his musical output. John brought Yoko in the studio which is a self-evident no go for every musician and Paul was the one who kept the band in a working order. Besides it´s a conspiracy theory that Paul tried to lock the movie in a strong room so to speak. That movie was available all the time.
You know we´re living in an absurd world. Nearly every prof. musician like me admires Paul and his abilities whereas you amateurs talk about bad behavior and other BS. Here are just some musicians who also admire him: Jaco Pastorius, Phil Collins, Stevie Wonder, Leonard Bernstein, Kiri Te Kanawa, Tony Banks, Greg Lake and list goes on and on. But I guess my effot is useless.
A nice synopsis of readily available public sources. Appreciate your efforts to pull it all together. Cheers!

Pretty much everything The Beatles did was groundbreaking. In the beginning, I Want To Hold Your Hand and the rest of the early songs were groundbreaking. Rubber Soul was. Then Revolver was. And then Sgt Pepper was. Awful hard to out do that. I have an audio bootleg of the "Rooftop Concert". Sadly, it does not live up to the hype.
I just can't fathom why The Beatles didn't just play a concert featuring White Album tracks. I mean, it was only two months since the White Album had been released. Every other group in the world would be spruiking their last record. I realise that they would have been fed up playing those songs after all the time it took to record them. But to start rehearsing and recording a whole album's worth of new songs just six weeks after the release of their last album, then perform publicly playing songs that no-one had ever heard before is completely astonishing. Only The Beatles had the ability to come up with the goods
I remember seeing this on tv .I was so excited
The Jefferson Airplane did a rooftop show November 19th, 1968, midtown Manhattan.
I remember watching this from the street.
Hello Ann Jello Brewno....Hi, were you in the Movie ?
I can answer that one. The Beatles didn't want to do live performances, not because they didn't like to perform. Not because they didn't want to promote their material, stay on top of the charts, make money, etc. They just couldn't stand the touring, the huge legions of screaming nutty fans, the press, the travel, the lack of privacy, the logistical problems. McCartney wanted to perform in public, but the rest of the Beatles didn't want to be bossed around by Paul and probably weren't completely on board with the film, and so this was their way of accommodating Paul with the least amount of effort, because they were all individually getting sick of doing the Beatles thing for well over a decade.
@Joy Stinson That's a stretch. John, was fed up with being a Beatle, with or without drugs. He was wanting to be with his new wife, and he was beyond being fed up with McCartney's ego and bossy ways and desires of live shows and Maxwell's silver hammer etc. Not to mention George's wanting to have a bigger showcase for his tunes, and also being a bit fed up with McCartney.
They had come to an end. We oughta be fine and grateful for when they were a band. They remain, without peer.
John Lennon's quip to George Martin about not using any of his 'production shit' was quite simply unthankful and unappreciative. We all saw how important George's guidance and 'shit' was poorly missed during Lennon's solo career. In my opinion Martin should have been given writing credits for songs such as Strawberry Fields and I am the Walrus. Without his orchestration theses 2 songs would have been far less.
"Whatever Gets you Through the Night" is one of the WORST songs that any of the FF did solo!

In the first place, why did they choose Twickenham Film Studios as a place to rehearse when they could have filmed and rehearsed in a much comfortable place with more adequate equipment in the first place like Abbey Road Studios? At least in Abbey Road, they'll feel more at home and they have already been filmed there during the All You Need is Love broadcast and the Hey Bulldog promo video

Between the times when the Beatles played the Ed Sullivan show in early '64 and their last live show @ Shea Stadium in '66 I believe wore their matching suits onstage. I don't have any reason to believe that they DIDN'T stray from that between those two dates. So, if that's correct, this is the first time they played in public not wearing those ridiculous 'boy band' suits. Kind of a superficial observation admittedly, but it's really kind of weird that the world's experience with this band in live shows is them wearing those 'boy band' suits...then no live shows / only recording....then disbanded.
This wasn’t the end of the Beatles. After this concert they began work on Abbey Road the next month
John Halliday does a great Paul here. His long hair hid some of his differences with his ears and jawline.
Best Beatle concert ever !!
My understanding was that the Beatles would rehearse new music, then record the album they had been rehearsing as a live album.
The only part I disagree with your expert was that the Beatles were never interested repeating themselves and to have them just promote the white album and perform those songs would have been the last thing on their minds. It’s the reason during the so called Lady Madonna video shoot they instead recorded Hey Bulldog.
It's BACK!
How great were the Beatles. All the greatness we were denied. Imagine them touring after the White album. Or touring again at any stage. Getting back together in the 70's. All the could have beens that others of that era got to do ever since. Plus all the soft, poppy early stuff that lacked the edge of the Who or Stones and many other bands. Being called the Beatles, an awful name to this day. And still they are greatest musical force ever, despite all that. They did more in a few years than bands with 50 could pack into their careers.

Very, very interesting..
When we spoke about why the Beatles didn't ever do another live concert, the answer was always the same: screaming girls would always drown out the band, to the point where no one could hear them anyway; so why bother going through all the trouble. Just as today, fans can't seem to stop hooting and hollaring and cheering and clapping along during the band playing the concerts, completely ruining the performance that the band tries so hard to do perfectly. If the audience is going to ruin the sound, then why bother.
plus the sound systems were primitive... no stacks of Marshalls....
Only place they could agree on
What happened to the complete 5 song video that was on you tube ?
Things just went sour for them after that trip to India, but we ate it all up anyway.
they usually did their best when under pressure.
I could be wrong? But to me it seems like they all knew that was it for them as the Beatles. So I think there was a sense of relief in a way.
It blows my mind that anyone should know so many details about anything, and whether it really matters. Regardless, I adore The Beatles, collectively and separately. But this level of detail makes me slightly afraid.
Part 2 is actually more interesting. Be sure to watch it.
i perosnally think THE BEATLES could have potentially gone on to be an amzing 70's arena rock act everyone says they were nothing special as a live band but the circumstances really didn't allow them to come to fruition as a live band and the music they were making could not be reproduced live. problem was JOHN LENNNON said many times he was all about making records and playing live just "went with the territory" and GEORGE absolutely hated touring plus with YOKO being in the middle of everything there was no way any tour was ever gonna happen. the rooftop deal was because they couldn't agree on anything and JOHN and GEORGE had basically already mentally left the band by then so the rooftop was just sort of a "this is better than nothing" deal. i think it's an awesome performance not terribly exciting to watch but it was freezing cold and they hadn't played live in eons so you just gotta take it as it is. i too think it's sad they didn't do one triumphant last gig at royal albert hall or something especially them doing some white album and earlier songs live. but also any BEATLES gig would have been crazy chaos it would have been 1964 all over again i can't imagine the insanity.
I always heard that about them being nothing special live...well one view of McCartney during the wings over america tour is enough for me to believe the would have nailed it as a touring act in the 70s..I would have loved to see him with the other 4 during that period. In regards to the rooftop...I think they sound better than most bands would under the same adverse conditions....they would have gotten their Hamburg chops back after the 1st leg of a tour and been a machine. Oh well, guess we will never know.

Love the Let it Be album.
No need to watch a 7-minute video to get the answer to this question, all you have to do is read the script and listen to the bonus- chatter between tracks -CD of "Let It Be - Naked" (commissioned and executive-produced by Paul McCartney) to find out that Ringo and George kept saying "No" to all of Paul & John's suggestions for a great spectacular final concert; suggestions like playing on a chartered ocean liner with a hand-picked audience (to satisfy George's & Ringo's fears about 'crazies in the audience'), or to play in Pompei (so a few years before Pink Floyd finally did it), but George & Ringo come across as total wet blankets and it's clear they don't wanna play live at all (at least, not with The Beatles).
I’m not into the Beatles at all. Even though they are on my top 3 bands of all time, that rooftop version of “Don’t let me down” is truly iconic and a favorite of mine.
You do realize you contradicted yourself. Twice.
Great stuff! Great analysis! Happy Anniversary Rooftop Beatles!
Your accent reminds me of being back home. I'd place $20 that says you know who Chris Allen is and think he's one of the most trustworthy weathermen around.
(Thanks for these videos!)
Hey man - just now saw this. You nailed it! We get our news out of Evansville, not BG, but that's funny you caught the accent.
They betrayed the floor gang
Jefferson Airplane did it weeks earlier in NY
Addressed this in Pt 2.
Great!!!
Why the rooftop? Because Ringo said so!
1 simple answer to why the roof: cuz why not?
SORRY to all the Beatles fans but Jefferson Airplane did the first rooftop concert in Nov. 19, 1968 in NY.
Don’t miss Part 2 then. ;)
There’s an idea, an airplane concert!
It’s actually in 1970 part of let it be
After nearly exhausting most of their newly written song ideas for their masterpiece, The Beatles White Album, released a month earlier, it’s no wonder they went into this situation a little empty handed.
Fab Four 4 Ever!
Because they felt like it
In a big way, Paul messed up in trying to preserve the myth/dream (as John put it.) If he had allowed Billy Preston and maybe Clapton to join the group, as both John and especially George were open to, call it the New Beatles or something, they probably could have gone on another year or two. Would have been interesting, but it is what it is.
And ...
Only 42 minutes ?
Phish performed on Ed Sullivan Marquee in June 2004
Superbe ! Quand je pense que ca a été interrompu à cause de quelques crétins qui se plaignaient du "bruit" au lieu de profiter de cette prestation gratuite des Beatles...
They definitely should have started back touring again, it was several years later and they didn't look like the young handsome guys in matching suits playing dance numbers, no, this was the long haired hippie Beatles who's music had massively matured. Long gone would be screaming girls that drown out the music. The Beatles could have been the biggest band in the 70's easily, even bigger than Zeppelin. IMO a band can't survive just making albums, they must get out there to connect with their fans to keep the band alive, instead the Beatles simply got sick of each other being a studio-only band. McCartney understood this and definitely had his head screwed on right by wanting to tour again.
It had to be really cold.
Why has it been taken down? What’s happened to Get Back?
