  • Let Me Explain is a series discussing and analyzing tree climbing/rope access techniques. It focuses on how they are applied in actual work situations. This series is a glimpse into the thought process of an experienced climbing arborist working aloft.
This is a live one take commentary I made while watching the various bits and pieces I took from the full video (22 minutes or so, starting at the traverse and ending at my return the ground).
    In episode 1:
A mature ash tree and an adjacent spruce tree are spec'd to be crown cleaned. Using the ash tree as the primary anchor point, I traverse to the spruce via the DMM Captain hook, Install a V-Rig (redirect), and remove the dense, tenacious spruce deadwood from the top down suspended between the two anchor points.
Why would anyone do this? Why not finish the ash, hit the ground, grab a ladder and 'huck and buck' up the spruce? Why not grab the pole saw and some extensions?
The decision is more complex than one would think - there were lots of variables to consider before choosing to approach the work this way. Variables include: Retrieval, sharp rope angles and lateral forces, terrain of the site, current ground personnel work load etc.
Moral of the story: Yes, it requires extra gear, yes it requires time to learn how to use it. You don't really know something's true potential until you try it. But hey, maybe I'm overthinking it - just another gear head millennial.
The V-Rig has a special place in my heart and it always will - however, I will say it's a finnicky redirect that's friction sensitive (and there's lots of extra places friction occur). There's stuff to setup, stuff to drop, stuff to retrieve, it requires four times the rope...it's not perfect. It is not something I use regularly - I'll more often choose SRS/natural redirecting over MRS/VRigging in a mature spreading tree.
** It's not tools alone that improve your climbing - it's how you choose to apply them. **
    Hope you get my point.

I get why you traversed to the second tree instead of going to the ground, good on ya. I dont get why you didnt just set up a retreivable system off the second tree? Were you doubting the strength of the wood or just using both trees because it was easiest? I think I would have done two separate systems but thats just me. def cool.

One hitch to tend, two $80 hitch climbers to buy.

@@robthompson1399 they deserve all the credit. If you could only ever buy 2 pulleys, pinto and hitch climber hands down. DMM is the McLaren of aluminum design.

Good video that v rig looks comfortable. I can see it being handy in certain situations, good video 👊

You made the right choice, once I get gravity on my side, I like to keep it that way.

I like your approach, looked like fun as well. I love my retrievable anchors and redirects. It's all just so much fun. Best job in the world. Can't wait until I no longer need to march through 4' of snow to do it😁

What a great video, very informative. I'd rather spend 20 minutes climbing over then 15 minutes climbing up, just because it's so cool

I love the v rig, it's like having a floating anchor point. As in, it gives an anchor point where there isn't one. It also acts like having two systems, but they work and tend together. A wonderful application.
Although I wouldn't have used it there. I'd have used a second system, either another hitchclimber system through my thimblesaver, which would choke off nicely. Or stationary rope. I usually have my captain on a separate stationary rope set up anyway, so I'd have just made it across, and made a canopy tie to retrieve from the ground. Could also use the thimblesaver for that too, but that would involve a load of pulling rope through. I'd be less concerned about pulling those steel thimbles out of the tree than letting a pinto hit the deck from up there.
Like you said, there's a million different ways to skin a cat ! So each to their own, respect.
