i got the book and read it as well recently, and i have some minor complaints as well the effect in the book is amazing ngl content wise i love it
but the amount of wasted space that is used to make the book look aesthetically pleasing, actually annoys me in a way. so all in all it actually wasted a lot of paper that can be used to describe more routines or effect like i think the huge picture is really unnecessary i feel they could actually fit in more 4-5 more routines in each book really
Yeah, I understand. I think both books could have combined to one, but that's just me 🤷♂
@@EruditeMagic i completely agree with you on this, i personally enjoy the effects that the book offered. But the amount of routines in it feels a bit underwhelming when you actually finish 1 volume in literally just one seating
Truth be told, I finished both in one sitting, but I was reading with a purpose
I was on the fence about these and your review clinched my decision to not buy them. They look gorgeous, but with slim substance and the focus entirely on packet tricks, I will have to pass.
Happy to help, Jim. Hope you're well! We should visit again soon 😃👍
I decided I was going to buy these 2 books. I went to TCC and got ready to order and noticed they were charging $30 for shipping. I decided not to buy them for that much shipping.
i know this is under the wrong forum with the fav tricks from the old school. but i have poured over no mans land i really dig the first two tricks in the book stellastardust collector, b/c it leads before the townsend count
Your comments with regards to editing is how I feel about Mosaic by Arkomanis.
Can we make these cads or gather from GAFF decks or need to mandatorily purchase from TCC
You could probably make or acquire most of them.
and not for over exposure or whatever, the packets come with these pretty much include inevitable choice and a whole combo of gaffs you'll never have to buy again
There you go - another reason to consider them. Thanks for sharing, Kyle
Actually these books were first published in Chinese. Master Sato allowed Houlin Li who is a Chinese magician to record and publish these tricks in China. So I think the books might be translated from Chinese. I love these books so much and have read them many times. I recommend to all magicians who like performing packet tricks. You will find a new world!👀
Thanks for chiming in with the information!
The books look great but from what you’ve said they lack clarity and are a bit repetitious. What a shame to have that great look and yet to possibly fail on the final hurdle, unclear English!?!☹️
Don't get me wrong. You can understand how to perform the material, especially with the accompanying videos. However, they are not as clear as I would hope
I tend to avoid tricks that repeatedly use a false count, and many packet tricks fall into that category. There are some great ones, like those of Peter Pellikan, but for the most part they just look fishy and I don't like them. Add in gaff requirements and I'm even less excited.
At least now you know 😄🤷🏻
@@EruditeMagic Yes thank you for the review!
Thank you for another well thought out review. I bought the books, as I am a sucker for beautiful, esthetically pleasing magic books (such as Vanishing Inc is putting out these days). I have to agree that some content may have been lost in translation (I believe the translator was Houlin Li, probably mostly a Chinese speaker fluent in Japanese...and btw, I am always envious of someone that speaks more than one language), and instruction is more than doable, having only tried one of the routines thusfar. We are also in agreement in that magic books should all come with performance videos...hopefully that will be trending. Principia comes to mind. I think that is the best way of learning magic, and if not that, to determine whether or not you want to put in the time to learn a particular trick.
Without any disrespect, I am surprised you do not own any of Richard Kaufman books featuring Japanese magic. Please look into these books. They contain the work of magic's more innovative magicians. Ask Mr. Kaufman, Steve Cohen, Max Maven...all typically enamored with magic coming out of Japan. Thank you again for all of the work you put into these reviews.
Thank *you for the comment. As you said, I truly do respect anyone who speaks multiple languages, especially if they're willing to use that knowledge in behalf of the rest of us.
I never said I don't *own any books on Japanese magic...just that this was my first time *reading one. 😉 I will plan to read some of the other books on my shelf that explore the Asian perspective on magic! Thanks again for your thoughtful note and for being an Erudite Magician.
@@EruditeMagic Thanks for your reply Jeff. I mis-heard. I am also guilty of unread books on my magic shelf (and I have a lot)...I am not as fastidious as you, so I would say at least a quarter of them are unread. Thanks for taking the time to reply...many don't these days. Keep up the great work.
Great review.😊
A golden oldie at this point 😄
Well...they look lovely at least.
They are, and they've still got some great magic in them!
Thank you for the review!
You bet, Roy Ma! Thank you for the opportunity 👍
I'm having similar frustrations right now with Miguel Angel Gea's book, "Perception Shaped as a Coin". I'm already getting the feeling that there is some really powerful theory about perception (and probably some equally powerful coin magic) within, but the quality of the translation is making it a very difficult read!
It's too bad - it's not expensive to get an English-speaking proofreader 😕
@@EruditeMagic I'd do it!
It is tough for a nice guy to leave a less than glowing review, but you provided some great feedback. TCC is a great company and I know they will consider your thoughts when producing their next book and that book will be better for it!
Thank you, Jake! You're so right about how hard it is, 😬 and also about what a great company TCC is. I'm sure they'll use any relevant feedback to improve in the future
I just bought those books but dont receive it yet. I hope they get a good review. Will see this tomorow👌
Hope you enjoy the review!
The books look interesting. Maybe they will do a second printing and correct the mistakes. Thank you for your review 😊👍😊👍😊
Thank you for the honest review. This is why people watch review channels.
You're welcome, Zubair! Thanks for watching and taking time to comment 👍
Excellent review. I have a lot of misgivings about QR codes, especially in books. I’ll hold onto books for decades, but I’m doubtful that a QR code will be very long lasting. What happens when the link dies? The information is lost and your book might not be as useful now. At least with a DVD, I can transfer content to a new physical medium if needed. Please include if a book has such QR codes in your future reviews too.
Only time will tell about your misgivings
just finished book 2, i really dig these methods, and the neg space. and the weird instructions can be a puzzle at times. even if you rip out the neg space pages, you still have some cool stuff to learn
That's great! Glad you enjoyed them 👍
I've been waiting for these books since the originals came out. I hope they turn out to be just as great as people claim they are
I hope you enjoy my insights into the books!
If you like the trick videos and you want to do those tricks, you'll like the books. Very visual and the nit picky stuff (awkward English/etc.) isn't near the issues the reviewer would have you believe. You can learn/do the effects in the videos reading the book and using the included gaffs. The videos (once loaded via QR) can be saved to your hard drive for later viewing.
Jeff the books look beautiful and I am so glad you took the time to review them for us. Sounds like beautiful photos, a great smell and the gaff cards may not be enough 😀 you saved me some money here. I can always count on your reviews. Missing the morning live review but no worries I am still hooked to your Sunday reviews.
Thanks, Nancy - glad the review helped you with your decision 👍
Thanks for the awesome review as always!
Request: If there's any older books you've already read that might be getting a re-printing in the near future, it might be fun to get a review on them (if you haven't reviewed them already).
I try to pay attention to reprints and as always, I try to line up my reviews to give timely information. You'll be among the first to know!
I’m so disappointed. They look so beautiful! Thank you for another great review! The price is right and being able to click on a video after each trick is awesome! That is the way todays books should be written. That feature is one reason I might try them anyway. The price seems fair, unlike so many new books today.
I hope you won't be dissuaded from trying something that appeals to you. My feedback is obviously personal, so you may have a different opinion. 🤷🏻
@@EruditeMagic I have to admit, these books remind me of Steve Cohen’s book that I was so disappointed in because it was all pictures. It should have been sold as a coffee table book. I got the book for $28 from Bobby Bowden so that made it more tolerable. I am not a fan of picture page fillers. I also don’t like books that don’t translate well.
With all that said, because the price is fair, I might give them a shot.
Let me know if you do - I'd be interested to hear what you think 💬
Look like beautiful books. Not a big fan of gimmicks though. The QR codes idea is fantastic!
Agreed! I love the idea of the QR codes. The first place I saw this was with Tim Hannig's book.
Thanks for another great review. Impressed with your note taking as you read. Kudos!
Thanks, George! If I don't take notes as I read, I find that I lose the thought
Another thought occurred to me as I watched this video. There's a trend in magic books these days that's been getting more and more common, which I see evident in the pages of this book. That is style over substance. I love Vanishing, Inc. so much and am appreciative of their contributions to the art. On the other hand, I've purchased several recent titles from them that put flashy book features over dense magic content (bookmark ribbons, slip cases, huge glossy photos, elastic book bands, puffy covers, etc.). Quality books for sure but they often pale in comparison to older magic books that put content first.
I agree with the trend to larger pictures and more flashy layouts. However, great content and good layouts are not mutually exclusive. The market for magic books continues to change...
That is true. I think in my recent book purchases I see maybe 25% that fall squarely into the "flash over substance" category. On the other hand, titles like Parlour Magic, Principia, and Pure Imagination are examples of absolutely gorgeous books with top notch, incredible content!
💯 Exactly! Thanks for sharing your thoughts 😃👍💬
Total L and brain-dead comment, older books had materials that were covered before. So the field was green. But now there is a cut throat competition now for material. Also older books are not generally better. They just feel new when you read them but there is a bias too for old is better. Newer books are better
Can't say that one or the other is better, they're just different. Who is better - Michael Jordan, Lebron James, or Kareem Abdul-Jabbar? 🤷🏻 Impossible to say since they played in different eras with different expectations
if your not as anal as our friend here this isnt so bad haha thanks for the review, i purchased this based on i love packet tricks. it is all prertty and shiy and smells nice but ur right when it comes down to it, fill that flippin page with some knowledge. i had some issues with tangram s much $$, like a book with commercials. anyway, thanks again
You must know DonB… yes❓
For sure - he's my sponsor and friend! How do you know him? 🤔
@@EruditeMagic 😊 I live here in Minneapolis Minnesota and have most all my life.

@@FollowMagicBrad awesome! Such a small world, right?
Another great watch shot!! 👍 These books look interesting, I do find the layout a little off-putting where text is pushed around to accommodate the pictures but as long as the content is good.
For reference I think Bannon's books have the best layout and structure.
Do love the QR codes though.
Thanks, Dan! Love my Hammy watches. 🤩⌚ There are definitely things to like and dislike about these books (like all books)
