Narrated by Scott Graham, one of the great voices of NFL Films, this video features three uniform history experts: Joe Horrigan who is VP Communications and Exhibits at the Pro Football Hall of Fame where he has worked for more than 35 years; Michael MacCambridge, author of "America's Game: The Epic Story of How Pro Football Captured A Nation" and many other books as well as editor of the massive "ESPN College Football Encyclopedia"; and Scott Sillcox, sports uniform historian.

Black and gold are the colors of the flag of the city of pittsburgh, far pre-dating steel production.

Steelers unis are good. The only change I'd make is on the white jersey. Wish the last name was in black (instead of yellow) so it contrasts and can see better from far away.

Why have they not ever put that beautiful U.S. Steel emblem on both sides of the helmet? It is, indeed, one of the classic, timeless uniforms. Other great unis, IMO: Denver 1980's uniforms, Redskins, spear helmets (1960's) Falcons, black jerseys, red striped helmets, New York Giants, late 60's/early 70's (very tough and blue-collar looking) and Cincy before they started wearing pajamas @ 1982/3.
Tommy - I understand the question re the helmet logo, but don't you think it's a great Art Rooney story and a tip of the cap to the past that the Steelers only have the logo on the one side? For those who don't know the story, you can read it here:

No it's from the steel mill industry from Cleveland I can't think of which each Diamond means exactly but they all have multiple meanings like improving your life in the components to make still
With respect to the Steelers now famous Steel logo. The 3-point Steelers logo was first worn by the Steelers midway through the 1962 season (Nov 18, 1962) and has graced the right side of Steelers helmets ever since. The 3 points not only represent the ‘three rivers’ that meet in Pittsburgh, but were also a virtual direct copy, and tribute, to the US Steel logo that was introduced in 1960 - see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steelmark. Die-hard Steelers fans know that this logo is only displayed on the right side of the helmet. The story goes that when the logo was proposed in 1962, owner Art Rooney wasn’t 100% sure if he liked the logo - so he had it placed on the right side only. The tradition has been upheld ever since.
The 3 geometric shapes are actually called hypocycloids. The logo was originally a trademark of US Steel. The 3 colors represented the main tenants for how they marketed steel back in the day. Steel lightens your work, brightens your leisure and widens your world. Look closely and you will see two footballs between the hypocycloids. Strange but true fact - the US Steel logo was actually created in..... Cleveland. Go figure & Go Stillers!
I always wonder why in 1997 The Steelers decide to ditch the block numbers,instead go for that cursive style, that you see on their helmets I I never understood that

I'm sorry,but i'll never be convinced the Steelers colors are gold. They've won 6 Sb's. Their color could be pink and no one could talk smack :)
For 60 years I thought they wore black and yellow, and they should bring back that yellow triangle on the throwback uniforms and burn those bumble bees, especially with your killer B's now exterminated.

They really need to stop calling either the Packers or Steelers "Gold". It's YELLOW. You want to see GOLD, look at the Niners, or Saints. The Saints are the only literally "Black and Gold" team in the NFL.

Retro Revelations gold is made up of different color codes it totally different than the gold which is metallic gold worn by the saints. Though it looks like yellow it is actually gold by mixing various paints

MIKE S. They once had cheerleaders from a nearby college from 1960 though 1969, the Pittsburgh Steelerettes, it ended when Robert Morris College got their own football team.
In Baltimore we're the only NFL team with male cheerleaders, who are on the stunt team and hold and catch the girls. When someone makes fun of them, I say "lets change your squad to a flip contest" they back off. Every other squad in the league copies the same dance routines like Cowboys.
