How New York Hip Hop Lost Its Cool

  • Culture doesn’t just happen. Instead, it’s born out of circumstances that provide the exact conditions needed for growth. In hip-hop, the seeds of the revolution that’d give us the world’s most popular musical artform couldn’t have sprung up anywhere other than New York City, New York. Born of the ingenuity that comes with adapting to your surroundings, hip-hop was formed at the block parties held in the projects of the Bronx. From there, its breakbeats and call & response rhyming couplets were adopted by youths from Queensbridge, Harlem and Brooklyn. By the 90s, artists such as The Wu Tang Clan had taken that defiant spirit and brought it out to Staten Island and as the genre became a fixture of the musical landscape and demanded its respect, New York cemented itself as the undisputed capital of the culture. Standing as tall as any of the monuments in the city’s skyline, New York vibrated with the energy of the Big Daddy Kane’s to the Biggie’s, Nas’, Jay Z’s KRS One’s and DMX’s. Yet little by little, its position as the point of origin for hip-hop seemed to hold less and less weight as it was overshadowed by other regional scenes that’d dispossess them of their crown.

NY put too much hope on Bobby Shmurda failing to realize his music is shmediocre.

What a legend he stood in front of a mean crowd of new Yorkers in 95 during east coast west coast beef and he told them niggas then the south got something to say. After 50 was shot he was blackballed and couldn’t even get a record deal in New York. He was signed to Interscope which is a west coast label, Dr. Dre from California and Eminem from Detroit. The music industry side of New York barely fucked with 50. Unlike other artists 50 could not represent unity and brotherhood due to real street issues and the threats on his life. Everyone who did not fuck with him was already winning so he had to divide and conquer. The problem is that New York did not groom their artist and looked everywhere else for talent rather their own backyard. The south took over music then the internet came and now everyone sounds the fucking same. 50 cent is definitely one of the last authentic superstars that represented New York hip hop but he is not the reason for its decline.

Having lived in both the northeast and the south I can definitely say how NY treats their artists is totally different than the south. Because NY considers itself the birthplace of hip-hop they are always concerned with who is the best NY artist which encourages beef but whenever a new artist comes along in the south entire cities and regions get behind those artists to push them out to a national audience. In Louisiana it’s a miracle if you make it as a rapper and in Texas it’s hard to make it mainstream because Texas ain’t a industry state and they only have one city and its Houston and they not even top 5. And for the other states like Mississippi, they don’t got no rappers. The only state in the south that I can say you right about is Florida. I'm gonna say this as a hip hop old school listener. What happened is NY was arrogant and Said F everybody except us. When the west coast and south coast realized they did not need NY to go platinum, it was over for NY. There were different sounds from other parts of the States and those artist could sale platinum without NY. And could sale to other states other than NY which would blow the sales from NY away. These rappers spoke to their people. Talked about things they liked and could relate too and it worked. Cali could sale in Cali the Midwest and South. The south could sale to the Midwest and Cali. Look how many states that is and how many people that is compared to NY. So NY fell off. It will always be the mecca but they have to recognize others achievements and adapt to it.

I love how you explained that, I love the NY rap of the past but I always felt a sense of arrognace and pride like they were better and that can also be a recipe for distaster cause other cities and regions like you said had a gang a talent. also the decline came when cities in the Midwest< Texas>Northern Cali and Southern Cali was also hip to the independent rap game so that also was over for NY since they have always been about major labels.

The complete omission of Memphis’ contribution to the rise of southern hip hop is so disappointing. 3 6 Mafia has had such an immense influence on so many aspects of modern hip hop in general, but especially southern hip hop. Project Pat, Koopsta Knicca, Kingpin Skinny Pimp, Gangsta Boo along w/ sooo many others are so frequently imitated, soooo frequently sampled, and referenced by so many rappers from coast to coast. These artists are the blueprint for so much of what trap music is today. They *preceded* and influenced many of the Atlanta rappers mentioned jn this video… Makes absolutely no sense that the city is routinely excluded from these conversations.

New York went away from from its Raw, Natural, street sound it always had in the Past while also with the artist having a original sound .Ie, Rakim, Nas, BIG, 50, Cam, Jay, Mobb Deep the list goes on. And it doesn't make it better when the burrough were always in competition with each other since forever.

As a Southerner myself, Memphis born and raised, I can see why when it comes to some artists down here. Especially their early works. I wasn't crazy about Southern rap and didn't get into Hip-Hop as a whole until Em came out. I used to watch The Box a lot, but ‘My Name Is’ is the only song I ever called and requested, which got me in A LOT of trouble. Afterwards, my focus shifted to checking out other rappers that I had passed up on, which is where I fell in love with Wu-Tang and just the East Coast in general, but mainly NY. G-Unit changed everything for me. Out of everyone out nowadays, I still bump Lloyd Banks, GZA, Ghostface and Raekwon religiously. Stack Bundles too. Really hate he didn't get to have much of a career. I will add, as far as the South goes, Curren$y stays in rotation for me as well.

50 was the apex of NY gangsta rap, right man right place right time. Just as hip hop was at its commercial zenith, 50 had the look, the back story, the undeniable talent, the ferocity, the fearlessness, the backing, the entrepreneurial spirit and the business brains which enabled him to package and promote his product as perfect pop music for the time.
His music was played globally by everybody everywhere from all walks of life in a frenzy of hype not seen really since MJ. Sure others had been big stars but 50 was something else. A genuine cultural icon.
He was both a credible artist and a comic book character for kids. He made a major and credible Hollywood movie and released computer games, clothing lines etc etc . He was a phenomenon.
He milked his product for all it was worth just before the music industry imploded and project budgets would have to streamline, of course because of the internet, streaming and social media becoming the global medium. For instance, NY literally had ASAP Rocky and if he really wanted to he could be running NY with no problem he has the fanbase and the skills but instead he focuses on fashion too much. Same could be said about Joey Badass who decided to get into acting instead of releasing more music (In his case he is very underrated still). Dope. Gracias for putting this out. It covers the emceeing part of Hip-Hop perfectly. However it does leave out the other elements of Hip-Hop Culture though, even though break beats and deejaying are mentioned in passing. B-boying and hitting the wheels of steel along w/ Graff writing too, were a part of the culture that brought together NY urban artists of White, Jewish, Latino/Hispanic and Black kids from all over the 5 Boroughs together to form Hip-Hop's core 4 Elements, like Voltron. Then it was exported to the rest of the nation and eventually to the world at large via the exposure the culture got via iconic classics of Hip-Hop media such as the films and/or docs Beat Street, Style Wars, and Wild Style, to visual media such as the books Subway Art, Spraycan Art, and The Faith of Graffiti. All 4 elements find their origins in NY. Now overseas Asians run b-boyin' taking it to some insane levels when originally NY Boricuas and Morenos had that on lock, and you got West Coast Chicanos and Skaters now running graff when that was an OG NY thang back in the 70s and early 80s w/ its artistic White Kids and Latinos primarily turning inner-city madness into colorful works of artistic chaos. They too deserve their recognition for contributing to the culture's development and global phenomena as well. Other that that... Dope. Once again, gracias.

Moved to NYC in 2001. Here's what surprises me about the local scene: Even the low power, left-of-the-dial college radio stations don't break new acts. Maybe it's because the mixtape culture (and now social media) is where all the action is, but I came from a place (Bay Area) where stations were running independent hip hop around the clock. Artists literally had to sell platinum (and be hooked in with the right co-artists, it appears) just to get heard in their own home town.

Other places get their moment in the sun from time to time, but it always comes back around to New York. It’s impossible to overstate how huge the scene is there. There are tons of MC’s in New York who are virtually anonymous outside of New York, but they’re getting over huge in the underground there, blowing up shows and on the mixtape scene.

What happened with NY rap was predictable once "hip-hop" became a genre and commercially viable. In the beginning, hip-hop had a certain sound that was largely based on the NY accent. Despite NY being one of the largest cities in the world, it's a very small place compared to the rest of the US. Once hip-hop spread, southern rappers started rapping with their regional accents, and the "sound" of hip-hop changed. 50 Cent literally began using a southern accent to sell songs, and the rest is history. NY fell off, because too many NY rappers began catering to the rest of the country in order to make money. When trap took off, NY took another blow, because trap only solidified other regions and NY rappers had no choice but to appeal to that audience.
As a lifelong Brooklynite, I've watched NY go from innovators to copycats in music and sadly gangs.

    • @ViolentMLG
      @ViolentMLG 2 года назад +12

Pop Smoke evolved drill though, I do not put Pop Smoke in the same boat as any other NY or UK drill rapper.
Go back and check 2018 drill, Pop used adlibs and did things differently, him and Fivio evolved the sound.
Then, looking further, Just look what the producers did on shoot for the stars, nobody infused trap/drill like that, Pop was 1 of 1 for sure, and was the future of NYC.
Everyone was Jacking the drill wave and claiming it was 'up next', not trying to be that dude who was like; 'I been saying', but I knew once pop died all of these dudes were way too generic to carry on the torch.
When CJ popped off and I heard Whoopty, my first thought was; 'Its not awful but its generic', and then he turned around and never produced a hard hit again.
People spent all of 2020 debating who was 'next up' and then the scene died.
Pop put NYC on the map again, and gave it its respect back after what Takashi did (even though in his prime, he was on fire), and for that, he's the most recent king of NY in the past decade, and that's real.

Also what slowed NY Hip Hop down was NY, (you can ask anybody this), NY only supported its own artist. Instead of being humbled that hiphop is growing they hated anything that wasn’t New York. Completely forgetting why hiphop was so fun. They created a lyrical niche genre only east coast can love. Early New York hiphop had simple lyrics and they forgot that. This also affected the west coast because the west felt they had to prove them selves lyrically and west coast music started to sound boom bap as well. Meanwhile the south didn’t care about lyrics and produce music that appeased to both good beats and decent lyrics. It wasn’t until the age of the internet where music started to blend. Dirty Sprite was the first of its kind & from Racks on Racks onward Future never looked back.. a lot of people give Thug credit but Thug ain’t come into his own until bout ‘14.. Future had a whole careers worth of material by the time Stoner came out.. y’all gon start to comprehend Future’s career in its totality one of these days.. ppl think Future first started rappin in 2015 for whatever reason

People don't recognize Future's HOF status and influence on the rap game. Would put in Lil Jon and Luda as the bridge from OutKast to the TI, Gucci Mane, Jeezy era where the ATL scene produces multiple stars that establish it as an equal to the NYC and West Coast scenes. Future represents a new era where ATL is dominant and NYC no longer has multiple stars and middle players that command the same attention of the whole industry.

It’s also worth mentioning people like Joey/PRO ERA, A$AP Mob, and Flatbush Zombies that also kept NY relevant during the early to mid 2010s before NY drill hit the scene. These acts may have took styles from other regions/time periods but they still made sure you knew they were from NY.
