A someone else noted, she plays this significantly faster than others, and in my mind, hers is the right tempo. The speed not only highlights her prowess as a pianist and musician, but also brings out the beauty and power of the music.
Have heard several others play this etude no 12. Compared to the others I have heard she plays it about 50% faster. She is head and shoulders above all of them! Incredibly energetic version, and I think it should be played this fast! I don't know how many times I've heard this now, and it gives me goose-pimples every time!!
I laterally can't listen to any of them play anything. It feels like I'm getting slimmed or something. Maki is the only one who even understands what's she's doing. She's brilliant, a pure joy to witness.
@L8nitedave Check out an album called “Dreaming Awake” with Bruce Levingston and Ethan Hawke. It’s not a complete album of the études, I don’t think this one is on there, but their selection works well and it’s really the only thing that comes close for me
@Santino Mateo Again, a complete moron trying to promote something worthless. Stay on target and that goes for Steven Victors moronic comment as well! Edit: YT has removed his idiotic advertising and the following comment to it (probably also made a shadow account created by himself for this purpose).
I am absolutely smitten witn the Philip glass piano worls. It's almost all I play now. I grudgingly do some Chopin and Beethoven because I feel I should but I can't get it out of my head. Dinnerstein, Lisitsa, Olaffson, Maki Namekawa and others all deem it worthy with great peformances.
For me this is a Hurricane Category five. I was sucked in without being able to do anything about it. Fantastic artwork. And, as others say here: Don't listen to the haters; they are not worth of hearing this world-class music.
Miss namekawa looks as though she is having so much fun playing this one its infectious, so enjoyable to watch as well as hear it played so daringly and with fire. I want my own dvd of all these tunes if there is one cos these are cut on here and I want the whole 20 etudes with maki on dvd please
I was very lucky to see the premiere of the Etudes at Brooklyn Academy of Music. Twelve different players took the stage, one at a time, each having their own piano bench brought out and returned after their Etude was played. It was a beautiful evening and this wonderful performance just adds to the beauty. Thank you for posting.
I love 2:30! I'm assuming it's an intentional visual reference to that video of Philip Glass Ensemble playing Train/Spaceship, Sadlers Wells 1982. (Wow, that was a nerdy thing to say!)
Music creates stories, small films in the mind. In mine I see my life. I am driving down the side of a steep mountain traversing curves when suddenly there is a large yellow street sign that says "Slow-Sharp Curves Ahead" but it's too late and I am holding my breath while taking these turns at breakneck speed. Can't help seeing that when I hear this. The song is like a warning. Caution. Things are about to get seemingly out-of-hand.
we need slow tutorials for these works.... as to how to keep different rhythms in both hands.... 6 12 13 16 seem to surpass glass opening piece.. otherwise watching this just creates envy..... to play at this level.... the performance here exceeds, what i have seen glass do in person.... the intensity, and phrasing, are as only a master actor could pull off... bravo... encore.
As a muse fan, this was incredibly satisfying to find by chance and immediately recognize before another chord rotation could start. Bellamy is a hell of a song writer, he should be up there with K. Cobain.
+douglas mccann I see in reading the notes of the Namekawa recording that PG says he wrote #s 11-20 from 2004-2014. No wonder I wasn't listening to them over the past ten years. (Discovered PG in 2004 via Koyaanisqatsi)
These two are friends and Philip will sit with her and gives her advice easily making these the best versions of his work or most authentic versions of what Glass was actually intending. It seems these works are being played more and more at much faster tempos than intended?
during the bass ending... i am swirling in a black hole to the event horizon..... or to the edge of a maelstrom.... i dont where, but i am no longer here.... only music can do this...
For those who tire of the circus of instrumental competency rest assured the etude is where new musculature is postulated which then measures into the accepted architecture to social sound. At times being the best circus performer fails to reach the destination sought.
THE best interpreter of Glass piano music IMHO. No one comes close. She totally gets it.
A someone else noted, she plays this significantly faster than others, and in my mind, hers is the right tempo. The speed not only highlights her prowess as a pianist and musician, but also brings out the beauty and power of the music.

I can't get enough of this, I listen to it every day. Philip Glass is my daily companion.
Fr fr mmaki namewara is such a talented musician and this piece is stunning
This one is my favorite Glass Etude. Morons keep complaining Glass is "empty". This is some extraordinary stuff. Damn!
It doesn’t matter if people call Philip glass empty, because it’s still stumpy most people, and the people who don’t get it can do nothing about it
@Santino Mateo Again, a complete moron trying to promote something worthless. Stay on target and that goes for Steven Victors moronic comment as well!

Empty? It's half full.
Sorry :D :D

This is rock'n roll, babe! Even Sebastian Bach would dance to this rhythm.
She is fabulous, as is Víkingur Ólafsson, as a Glass interpreter. The future beckons in this kind of music.
For me this is a Hurricane Category five. I was sucked in without being able to do anything about it. Fantastic artwork. And, as others say here: Don't listen to the haters; they are not worth of hearing this world-class music.
Tears of joyful ecstasy taking me to higher levels every time I listen to this masterpiece. She is beautiful to watch as well!
I'm glad I got to see all 20 Études live performed by Philip Glass, Sally Whitwell, and Maki. It was truly breathtaking.
Hey thanks! That was a fun concert...
Jealous!
ETALLONIC performance.
I love how into it she gets!
This is so beautiful and poigant. And she plays them all by heart.
SUPERBE interprétation !!!! deux superbes pianistes !! Maki et Vikingur

Amen 2 dat! But maybe just uploaded to youtube vs dvd as I haven't had a dvd player since the mid- 2000's
Good news! There actually is a 2-volume CD of Maki Namekawa playing all the Glass etudes. Available to download!
this is definitely the best performance of the etude 12! it's so crisp clear and energetic and powerful
this is the most complex thing I have ever heard in my live! I am floored!
mesmerising.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Glad to see it confirmed in the comments
I didn't see her move this way at our recent concerts in Brooklyn, but it is less clear when watching from the wings!!
he did that in the video but in general he always did that in concerts to signal changes to the ensemble
Yep: opening sequence from that 1983 performance (Einstein on the Beach extract, now in 1 video) ruclips.net/video/91NyQkeZO_M/видео.html
I LOVE her shoes. The music is amazing as well.
wow! i've just discovered philip glass' etudes and they are amazing, mysterious and captivating. He has a lovely style!
Greatest pianist of our time.
Wonderful Maki Namekawa and Philip Glass!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank You
Playing that right hand at the end cramps up my hand lol. But thanks to Philip my arpeggios are stellar
Maki Mamekava is one of the Greatest Pianist of the Word.
This makes me pretty ecstatic, and I love the high definition black and while film that has come back into fashion.

2:51 headbanging
Still one of the best music pieces ever.
Holy shit this is incredible
Ah yes. Love this, so looking forward to the album.
B R I L L I A N T. Can’t say it much better than that. Brilliant composing, brilliant playing, brilliant interpretation, just brilliant.
Magic, what a music, what a perfomance!

PERFECT
She is so wonderful!
thank you Maki for such perfect interpretation

I heard Glass and her playing together ( some pieces by him and some by her ) and she is technically far more sophisticated.
You can buy the sheets from official pages. They aren't this expensive. Also the techniques are masterable. Book 1 is much easiert than book 2.
As a muse fan, this was incredibly satisfying to find by chance and immediately recognize before another chord rotation could start. Bellamy is a hell of a song writer, he should be up there with K. Cobain.
merveilleuse ♥
omg... just breathtaking... i only thought there were 10.... imagine my hearing this for the first time, what i must feel...
Yes the etudes are great!
+Piano Markus markus 12, 13 and 16 please record..... you have musicality.... as amazing as these recordings...
+douglas mccann I also listened to Solo Piano and Piano Etudes (first 10) more than 1,000 times before discovering this just now. Won't forget.

Just wonderful !!!! I love it !!!
wow! just wow!
Total technical command; perfect pitch of feeling.
Thank you.
Estos estudios de Ph. Glass son una maravilla para los pianistas. Estoy en ellos
Excelente!!!
Pure pleasure!
Pure beauty on all levels
Reminds me of the the Tempest Sonata third movement revisited.
Fantastic.
Watching her expressiveness is half the fun.
Mesmerizing, it is speechless
Really nice. And I like the headbanging. Very cool
My soul loves every bit of this
maravilhoso!
How the hell is she doing that with only two hands???
absolutely awesome!
Wonderful (I enjoyed very much the video)
Bonito!!!

Awesome‼️
Wonderful.
Wonderful!
Wow OMG

Your candyman piece was perfect
Bravo❤️❤️❤️🌹
Beautiful!
yumm
Weltklasse!
Formidable
Frumos, unic, genial
Smashing!
Pratiquement toutes ses œuvres pourraient être mises en ballets. Ces merveuilleuses études pour piano également bien entendu...
Wow
I love the 'jazzy' interpretation she provides! Very refreshing!
incredible!!!
Fascinante !!!
during the bass ending... i am swirling in a black hole to the event horizon..... or to the edge of a maelstrom.... i dont where, but i am no longer here.... only music can do this...
Dude, please.
woah
GO YoU!
Замечательное исполнение!
Jaaaaaa!!! Fantastisch!
IMHO, Nico Muhly's performance (PBS) is the gold standard. for this piece.
is it on youtube?
this, this is epic!
Which is the etude on Which she wears a spectacular pair of shoes and there is a marble runnig down the strings?
For those who tire of the circus of instrumental competency rest assured the etude is where new musculature is postulated which then measures into the accepted architecture to social sound. At times being the best circus performer fails to reach the destination sought.
fkn awesome man.
I think the woman should be having 4 hands. It can't be done with 2 hands. Amazingly played...:)
🎶❤️👌🏾
