This brand seemed much easier to do something more creative with an gave me an excuse to try some different techniques. Boat building is fun, but you know I get bored doing the same thing over and over so I was happy to have a chance to do something different. Harry's said they really liked it, so maybe I'll get another chance to try another idea.
When I saw you with the bath turbin I cracked up! The bubble bath was hilarious. You are definitely moving along on the planking. My take on planking is you can go up to the shear from the chine or you can go from the shear down to the chine or you can start at both ends and meet in the middle. Either way, the last plank fitted is the whisky plank and that is the important one. As long as it is water tight when you are done and you are happy with your work you got the job done right. Thanks for sharing Scott. Take care, stay well and keep moving ahead.
As usual a solid update. One suggestion for your consideration. Perhaps each episode could have a tool tip. For example, what counter sinkers are you using or what battery operated tools do you most....etc. Thanks. Joseph.
That's a good idea. I was thinking of doing a short video between boat building videos that focused on other stuff I'm interested in like tools, video production equipment or anything else I think of. Just not sure if there would be that much interest about what I think. However I do enjoy the video editing and production so I could do it just to practice techniques and folks can just skip it if they arent interested.
Everyone deserves a pamper day, ha, ha. Jus, loved the out take.t pleased you weren't sponsored by a T Paper company..... Great progress, loved the out take. Keep on keeping on. PS, I have seen boat builds and restos where they plank up so high and then down from the sheer, then fit the whisky plank. Restoring Suzanna comes to mind; they said the gap helped communication and the passing of tools was an advantage. You may find it in the early 50 + episodes.
That is some wild planking! But great progress man! Following a few boatbuilders on youtube and gearing up in my head to start a smaller boat project before diving into the deep end. Keep up the good work, can add one more person to the list of people you're inspiring
Love the humour with the bubble/candle bath. It brought out a side of you I did not suspect was there, which made it even funnier. Amazed at your self sufficiency...keep up the hard work. :D
G'day Crew ,, Thanks for the latest vid, Its sure comming along nicely , we can really see her shape starting to emerge from the jigsaw peices now , and its looking like a well balanced boat overall, with ample room for daily life aboard . (Hope the boss agrees) I even got a good chuckle from the well thought out shave vid . Well , more power to ya , stay safe n keep on bringing it , cos im lovin it . Thanks Scott. I Never buy stuff from adverts on the internet,,, but I bought a bunch of Harry’s stuff for xmas gifts for my three sons, and bought an extra for me. Well this was a pleasant surprise, the products are excellant, I ran out and bought some stuff from the pharmacy,, the more expensive stuff, and it’s not nearly as good as the Harry’s product. The gel can from Harry’s lasts forever, and is very good quality.. The blades are really good. So now I’m a Harry’s customer. I don’t get anything for saying this, but it’s simply top grade and very fair price , shipping was easy, and they don’t bug me with emails, notifies etc.
It really is crazy on how much I've spent on razors over the years to have a better experience with a lower cost option. I'm glad I got to try them so I could make the switch.
Scott. Maybe a silly question but noting that the plank layer is structural and not needed for a seal, why not taper screw the but joints together rather than use a butt block. A lot less work and not so ugly on the inside.
Timber forever timber - as a builder it's warm to the touch and always beautiful look at. And providing one is not too finicky can be manipulated enough for a person to build a monster of a boat in their garden. Great stuff. By the way, did the company selling the plans also suggest the temporary accommodation as it's all very cosy fitting.
Glad to see you were wearing the correct PPE for shaving, to many men risk the lives everytime they pick such sharp blades 🤪🤣 That aside you can really begin to see her lines, so what if you have an unconventional approach to planking. At the end of the day it's going to be covered in plywood. Have you given much thought as to how your going to work on her deck? Maybe leave part of the chine open that way you can work from the inside to fit the deck beams?
access is going to be a challenge once planked. I'm thinking of adding a staircase outside the building and cutting an access door through the wall of the boat shed so I can climb right onto the deck and take a ladder inside to work in the boat. That's for future scott to worry about.
Can't wait to see this boat splash. Bubble baths are essential to the focus of building a pleasure boat. I'd feel better about your work space if you'd wear a fall line in case you lean off that platform.
i just switched to a vinyl cover used in commercial billboards. 15 mills, very durable an UV protected. The only thing I don't like is that it blocks the light more so I've had to ad more lighting inside for the video work. However, it lasts longer than the plastic sheeting and white tarps I've tried I'll be happy.
Scott, Why not consider getting some volunteers to help, when the covid situation improves? Steve and Leo have used volunteers to accelerate their builts.
The regrowth between the bathroom and boat shed was awesome. 😁😁😁😁😁😉 The guys at Harrys should come knocking with a contract to use that footage if they have any sense. Cheers Eric
I actually color graded a part of the sequence just like a real editor! The cameras and software today are so good that anyone can make visually interesting videos. Some very clever engineers out there.
@@SixPointsWoodWorks Get the Skill man. I've used both and the Skill is easier to handle. Most of the pros who run worm drives use the Skill models. You also have to remember to change out the gear oil in them after 50 hours of run time or so or else the break in entails will rip hard on the gear box bearings. The ones who learn the hard way are those who barely get two seasons of run time out of them in a seasonal production environment. That 1st gear lube change is very critical to years of longevity in a production environment. I like the Milwaukee high end 7 1/4" saws though. They last forever. The battery powered saws I used primarily for interior trim work.
Man the whole man spa thing was more than a bit weird, okay saw the end bit still some what weird Plank your boat the way you want tell all the internet commandos to start their own builds
It would be strong and watertight and durable but I agree appears overly complicated 2 layers of 1/2 inch construction ply with a layer of glass and epoxy outside would be more than adequate and would have been done by now.
I help rescue a boat that was planked and skinned like Scott's doing. It had played on the beach for 2 days after the engine failed in high winds while coming into the river. It was a sandy beach with scattered rocks from the breakwater and it just happened to rest right on a rock. The only thing needed to repair that boat was to strip back the plywood and replace the 2 layers. It was incredibly strong.
Wood boats are beautiful man, but that is so much work. For just the amount of time you had invested in putting those few planks in I could have skinned the entire side of a steel boat.

What a tosser to make such a negative comment. Obviously got big issues in his own life to belittle the efforts this guy is making on his own. What I particularly like is that this is not a big buck build and careful calculations have been made over certain compromises being made in its construction due to planned use.
