HOT WATER TANK CHANGE - Job report - Plumbing Tips

  • How to change a hot water cylinder. We cover draining down the heating system, removing the old hot water cylinder which includes an indirect coil, immersion heater, surrey flange and shower pump so it's pretty insane. I'm not telling you exactly how to change one, this is more for the plumbing apprentices out there. Solders are a bit random as I used a new Fluxuator on these fittings. Enjoy!

    I changed a tank once, in a very hard water area.......it took three of us to get it down the stairs; it had nearly an inch of hard water deposit all around the inside of the tank. I carried the new tank up with virtually one hand.

    Totally agree about the annoying cold feed position. Replacing a cylinder next week and the current one is an old Hercal with cold feed conveniently placed at the front next to primaries. Along with the leak risk, the new cylinder will need to be brought forward to accommodate the fittings . This is going to create so many problems. Why do we seem to be going backwards in terms of design with so many things.

    Hi James, love your plumbing videos. They've helped me out twice over the Christmas break on my own system. I had two rads not heating up at all after Br Gas drained the system down for a repair. Managed to get both working after watching your vid on clearing an airlock.
    My second issue was that the boiler didn't shut down after the hive thermostat turned off.
    I have 27 rads on a 3 zone system and traced it to the motorised valve on zone 3 not shutting off. It turned out the valve was stuck in the on position due to worn teeth on the cam that activates the micro switch.
    I noticed that you mentioned in the video that the motors can fail and the valve not opening but might be worth mentioning that they can stick in the open position.
    Thanks again, and hold tight !

    As a DIYer, polishing the pipes is not just vanity, it’s also good to get the flux residue off. It is the same in electronics, we wash the solder joints with isopropanol alcohol to save the corrosion later on. Leave the older acid fluxes on and the joints grow beards in a few years! Also as The Boys says ..... it looks like you care about your work and that after all is all the recommendation you need.

    When draining heating side on the tank the coil, whats the best way. Can you just drain from the drain off on the flow and return on cyclinder or better to drain from rad downstairs. They have radiators on top floor also boiler and tank in middle floor.

    Effective and efficient and heats more quickly.

    Is it common in the UK to put that compound on compression fittings? I don't use this and never have any leaks.

    • @IPfrequently
      @IPfrequently 6 лет назад +2

      In theory you shouldnt need it on compression, but on jobs where it would be a pain to drain everything down for the sake of a small leak that wont tighten, or a joint thats in a really awkward blind spot, its worthwhile doing.
      Also on pipe that has previously had a fitting removed and may be a little deformed, as in the cylinders top (vent ) outlet.

    Great video , how do you attach the stat to the tank ? Here in the U.S. they are inserted into a pre fitted dry well !

    • @woodbine66
      @woodbine66 6 лет назад +5

      Cut a square in the insulation on side of cylinder and remove square. Stat is then held against bare copper of cylinder where insulation was removed. A slightly stretch strap is used to hold the stat tight against the copper. The electric immersion elements in these cylinders have thermostats inserted into a dry pocket.

    Great content, keep up the work
    Are lever valves better than gate valves....
    I know from experience gate valves are notorious for locking up and the heads snapping off but aren't lever valves prone to leaking?
    Which is best in your opinion and why?
    Thanks

    • @plumberparts

      Good quality lever valves everytime!

    • @nigeld8694
      @nigeld8694 Год назад

      I personally always use Pegler lever valves. After nearly 10 years they’re still working fine. They might be slightly stiff if they haven’t been used for a long time (maybe 5 ish years?). But once you free them up by turning it on/off they’re back to moving easily again. I hate those inline valves where you turn them on/off with a flat blade screwdriver. The amount of times they leak from the screw when you want to turn them off. Grrr... Absolute PITA!

We are living in poverty having been tricked by two teachers who doid cover ups re this house. One of them an "engineer". We were quoted £100 pounds an hour for tidying a five ftx 30 ft hedge.thats a weekly wage of around £4000 . I was very ill for 7 yrs screaming in agony every nite. Could get no help and was turned away by Hosps. no one in --politics.law-- or medicine will reply incl M Hacock (NHS) at his cottage in fornham Suffolk. No Local govt org will reply and no council. All this was going on before the virus. The local council say this- "If Theres Anything wrong with Local Govt The public Have To Go get a lawyer. We are experiencing violent Police attacks. They are saying they have been told to gagg us by the HM religion and Local govt systems. They also stated they dont read evidence. This is a mirror image of Germany 1933 where the universities and house wives and Students were ardent supporters. WE realise Mr Plumber was ill and his face us showing massive stress signs.That could be why he talks so fast so, slowing down would help his health. We are experts at CTM.Ayurveda etc because we had to do rthat because of no help. We hope Mr plumber can make use of this cos we stand a 30% chance with working class and half percent with middle class.Theres more bt we are worn out. Best wishes to any genuine people.Mr plumber does his work properly and po,.lishing pipes is rare. Not Spell Checked.

    That "tank" is a cylinder. Get your terminology correct if you are going to pretend to be professional.
