Hailey, thank you for your story! I resonate with so much of what you said. I feel like I am in this right now, and it’s a hard space to be. I have experienced some really hard things the last few years and it has kind of broken me inside. I definitely know I deal with depression because of it. I still have a testimony of my savior and my Heavenly Father, but I don’t feel like I used to. I haven’t gone to church in a while and I struggle with the guilt and shame that I’m letting everyone down. But I’m also trying to overcome a big guilt/shame complex so I don’t want to make a decision just for everyone else. But I’m also a people pleaser 🤪 Recently I’ve been seeing a lot of quotes about it being ok to slow down and not force things and learn what is meant for me. I’m trying to trust that there is a purpose to this path that I am on and who I’m becoming and learning through this.
As much as I don’t want any one else to feel this, I’m grateful to not be alone in my struggles and questions ❤

@@haileyrichmond6876 thank you for your sweet comments! It sounds like we are very similar beings ❤️ I find myself in the mountains alot and wanting to be with myself. I haven’t been to church, but I think that’s mostly depression related and not wanting to be around people. I keep Jesus in my heart ❤️ but every Sunday I feel huge amounts of guilt and shame. I truly feel like God does not talk to us through guilt, but why do I feel this so much on Sunday?? I keep thinking maybe it’s the adversary talking to me. And even though it’s about doing something good and going to church I feel he is trying to make me feel inadequate and not enough. So I don’t want to give into it until I know in my heart I’m ready so I can beat this guilt/shame thing, but man this is hard to know what is from God and what isn’t sometimes!!

@@randaholden have you ever read the talk "The Grandeur of God" by Elder Holland? Someone recommended it to me a while back. The most comforting concept I've taken from that talk is the fact that we can't know our Father in Heaven while we're here on Earth, and that's partially why God sent His son---because they are one and the same. If I ever have a question about the nature of Elohim (like does give us shame?), I can find my answer in the life and character of Jesus Christ. I'm grateful for the New Testament and the account in 3rd Nephi. I've found that my insecurities in my relationship with God are not the same as my insecurities with Jesus. With Jesus, I feel almost no insecurity. I'm not sure if you feel the same way. But because of my relationship with and scriptural knowledge of Jesus, I know that the insecurity I feel in my relationship with God is not from God. Anyways, I highly recommend the talk! Maybe you might find similar insights.
Also, it's crazy to me to look back on the times I was struggling the most mentally and see just how skewed my thinking and judgement were. Some of the feelings I was having were just so absolutely nonsensical, considering the situation! I'm not sure if and how the adversary does his thing, but mental illness is very real and if you're having extreme feelings then my heart goes out to you. I hope you can get the help that you need! Finding people and things to help me has been absolutely redemptive. I am rooting for you!

@@haileyrichmond6876 Thank you for your sincere comments and thoughts! I will check out that talk and see how it can help. I’ve always put everyone before myself, and tried to be what everyone expected me to be. I am learning that loving yourself and choosing you is not a bad thing. And that we truly can’t “run faster than we have strength” and when we do that, even if it’s for good things, it can affect our mental health. The struggles in this life are so real, and no one is immune to them, but I will keep pushing through. Thanks for your thoughts ❤️

Hello Sister, I wanna share my Testimony about the gospel with you, I have been physically blind for twenty one years now, I slowly started losing my eyesight at the age of twenty three. It took two years until I fully lost my eyesight. I am forty five years old now. Of all the years I’ve struggled with my blindness, it strengthen my face and I have gained wisdom from it as well although it was hard but I know God meant it for good. I’m also a guitar player and even that I use as an example relating to life’s trials we face every day.
Here is an example. I always tell people who I talk to that we are all spiritual blind and the scripture is like a cain which helps by guiding us through our journey, without the scripture is like a blind man without a cain. What would happen? He would trip stumble and eventually fall into a ditch.

I was the mission health advisor for the Florida Jacksonville mission and we tried really hard to make sure that the missionaries understood that when you are depressed, you can’t feel the spirit. We had some missionaries that struggled with religious scrupulosity and you just want to say trust in God and he will give you answers when he knows you are ready for it but they have to come to that knowledge for themselves.

That was beautiful! She will help so many of us on our journey. When she talked about seeing Heavenly Father crying and then her Dad watching through the glass, the words came to me of Jesus crying to Heavenly Father. “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” He went through what we are all going through or will go through. BUT we are never alone… “all these things shall give thee experience, and shall be for thy good”

Oh my gosh! This is SO relatable!! I truly think that’s one of the Main reasons why we go through hard things too, is because it allows us to RELATE and CONNECT with other humans going through the same thing! I have long felt the same: what gives me the right to say the church “I’ve conveniently been raised in” is the true religion? What makes my conviction any more valid than another’s? I’m currently feeling the same way- I go to church every week even though I have all these doubts, and a lot of times I feel like a fraud or a fake. “Am I fake for being here bc I doubt so many things?” But I read something one time that said “cling to the good parts” and that’s what I’m doing. I’m trying to focus on the goodness it brings to my life and trying not to take that for granted.

Hailey, your story reminded me about Job. Please read this story and take Job's name out and put Hailey on it and see for yourself. Satan has been targeting you, but you were and still are passing in and out while hanging onto the Iron Rod. We all love you Hailey and we are all here to support you or anybody who feel left out or down.
I have a story similar to yours but mine ended up in excommunication since I let go the Iron Rod. Satan finally left me down and broken. Luckily, I didn't just lay there. I got up and since I had all the knowledge and my testimony, knowing that I have a Loving Heavenly Father and a Savior who put himself in pains in order for me to keep trying. I got rebaptized and I'm now in full membership and happy knowing what I went through and I'm working daily to help anyone I'd see who might need my help along the way wherever I go.

I had to have devastating surgery as part of cancer treatment, and then got the news that I would have to have powerful chemotherapy and radiation. I was completely wrecked physically and emotionally. My friends drove me to the seashore. I hobbled to the beach all alone and looked out across the waves to the ocean. I asked God how he could let this much hurt happen to his children and to me. God told me to look out at the vast ocean. He told me that it was made up of his tears.

This was so interesting. I just recently spoke to a man who has left the church. He was a bishop and a seminary teacher, among other leadership positions. He asked how I believed, and I bore him my testimony. He then brought up the same point that Hailey struggled with. He said that the Catholic or the Muslim or the protestant are absolutely SURE that they are believing the truth. So, how can any of them actually know anything? I wasn't sure what to say except that I KNOW my truth. I can't speak to anyone else's truth.
Ashly, congratulations on your new baby! 🎉 and thanks for sharing that billboard story. That was so neat! God really does speak directly to us! It's so amazing!

One of your last comments…the morning I was getting married I knelt down and asked if I should marry this man. A voice in my head said “No!” Ha! What was I supposed to do? You don’t just cancel your wedding on the day of.
Well, 39 years later we’re still married. It hasn’t always been a bed of roses but he definitely is a good man, loving father of our many children and we’ve been faithful to each other.
I think we hear these phrases or words in our heads and it isn’t the spirit. It’s just our fears. I suppose it could also be the adversary trying to steer us away from something really good and worthwhile.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Between my work and callings, I live and breathe science and theology; thus, I've had the same questions and concerns for years. With time I gather more answers and more questions. I've had too many faith promoting experiences for me to deny the veracity of God. As a scientist, I remind myself that as awesome as science is, our methods cannot measure everything (C.S. Lewis, in his book "Miracles" had a great analogy about a fish in a dark room, cannot see the world outside and would therefore be unaware of anything beyond that dark room, but occasionally may feel the rumblings from a blast outside... that reminds me that just because I cannot see something, doesn't mean it doesn't exist). Now regarding the question about how can multiple religions wall feel they have the truth... I vividly remember years ago, a few years into my PhD studies, sitting in my bishop's office, voicing the same concerns you had. Since then, I've taken the time to supplement my scripture study with study of many world religions, and study of the history of religion, and philosophy, etc. I've gained a great appreciation for Islam while reading the Koran. I find great quotes for my sunday school classes from the Talmud, and writings of the apostolic fathers. I find great wisdom from Buddhism. As I pray, I have felt the answer of "duh... I love all of my children, and I have inspired many who were pure of heart. and the differences in doctrines are me dealing with the imperfections of my people, including in your faith... it's hard to achieve inerrancy when mortals are all imperfect. Once you all get out of your own way, the atonement can take full effect and all good pathways will meet up at some point in a unified path in your progression." My personal belief is that eventhough we have been taught that the the keys to the fulness of the gospel have been restored, most of us likely haven't received (i.e., accepted) the fulness, even though the keys are there. That is, God is handing truths, blessings, and covenantal promises to each of us (in and out of the church), but we're not prepared to accept them all right now due to our lack of understanding, obedience, or just genetic or generational baggage. That's why we must understand the gospel is a pathway of progression, which is untraversable without the full plan, including repentence (thanks to the atonement), death of the mortal-genetically-flawed body and resurrection (thanks to the atonement), and "becoming" (thanks to the atonement). Indeed, there cannot be true faith without doubt, nor growth without struggle, nor atonement without a fall.
Thanks for sharing your doubts and your growth.

I need to tell you you are not alone in the way you have felt. I’ve been in your shoes!!! I’m about 40 years down the road from you. Let me tell you (maybe you know) that a chemical imbalance doesn’t let you feel the connection to the spirit very well. The harder you strive at that point, the harder it is on you psychologically. You already know that you doubt when you are imbalanced. The faith I have learned is that you hold onto the iron rod blindly while you walk through these “mists of darkness”. Just have faith and keep going. Spiritual experiences will happen naturally. Your promise is your ticket! Keep that promise in faith and you’ll be OKAY!! Sometimes you do things (living the gospel) just automatically (even through doubts) and that proves your faith to Heavenly Father and ultimately yourself as you look back. You’re not always going to feel the spiritual closeness but it is there!!! Keep the Faith, my friend, and keep walking😃

Omg I had the EXACT same struggle with my faith when thinking about Jesus Christ. That fact that He's our Savior, yet we only pray to the Father was so confusing to me, and it made me wonder how to have a relationship with a Savior I couldn't talk to.
I think it helped to know that:
1.) Jesus leads His church through prophets and apostles now. Not sure how He does it exactly, but He surely plays an active role in the church.
2.) Jesus loves His Father perfectly, and He also loves us perfectly.
3.) Jesus asked us to follow Him, and one of the things He did was pray to His Father in Heaven. To be like Christ, we ALSO pray to the Father in Jesus Christ's name. When we pray to our Father in Heaven, it's showing respect for BOTH Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ simultaneously.
Funny enough, I ALSO had a Muslim friend in high school that I talked religion with. Never bugged me that she was so religiously devoted; her beliefs were just different and interesting.

What a powerful story. Wow! There is a tremendous amount of opposition out there. Sometimes I feel paralyzed by anxiety and fear. Why is there incredible suffering in the world? Why are people so mean and hateful? Why do my loved ones have to suffer? Why do babies and children suffer due to horrible abuse?! Why is the LGBTQIA community so hated? Why is there hate crime? It’s all too much sometimes.
But you are 100% correct. Jesus Christ enables us to keep moving forward. Someday we will all understand why so many of our brothers and sisters and we ourselves had to suffer physically, emotionally, psychologically and spiritually.
Jesus Christ truly can and does take upon Himself our excruciatingly painful parts of life. He lightens our load just enough so that we can keep moving forward.
Prayer to our Father in Heaven in the name of His Son is essential. Faith in Jesus Christ can bring miracles into our lives, usually in the form of quiet impressions but occasionally in clear unmistakable ways, like the dream you had where you saw Heavenly Father crying so hard for you. He does that for each and every one of us.
Thank you so much to the host of this podcast and to your guest! 🙏🙏🙏

After witnessing examples of priesthood power, seeing miracles come through priesthood blessings, and having several impactful experiences with the Book of Mormon, I know this is the true Church. Latter-day Saints might ask, Why isn't our membership larger if we have the truth? Nephi answered this question in 1 Nephi 14:12.

Great Testimony .. And thank you for sharing.. I feel though you overthink things a bit to much and drive yourself bonkers. I also have many questions in the gospel, so many things we will never know in this life and requires faith in Heavenly Fathers plan that things will be complete and whole in the life to come.
Is the Book of Mormon True.. Did Joseph Smith translate the Book of Mormon. Is Jesus Christ the Redeemer of the World . Once you have confirmation of the Holy Spirit bearing witness of the truth, then you build on that and every thing else really doesn't need to be understood or answered because history is messy and complicated and will drive a mortal human being crazy. I believe we will need to be immortal before we can understand it all.

Hailey, it sounds like you've been on a profound journey of seeking, and I respect your persistence in searching for truth and revelation. I can relate to the feeling of confusion and uncertainty when trying to understand who God is and what His plan is for us. I've had my own journey of faith as well, and I’ve found peace by turning to the Bible and the teachings of Jesus Christ.
In the Bible, God invites us to seek Him with all our heart, and promises that when we do, we will find Him (Jeremiah 29:13). I believe that we don't have to push through alone, striving for revelation, but that God’s grace is freely given to us through Jesus. It’s in the finished work of Christ that I’ve found clarity and peace, knowing that the answers to life’s deepest questions are in Him, and that He walks with us, even in our struggles.
I encourage you to continue seeking God through His Word, where He reveals Himself and His plan of salvation. Jesus promised that when we know the truth, the truth will set us free (John 8:32). I’ll be praying for you on your journey.

Ah, the mists of darkness came to pull you off the rod. We do have to experience this. I'm so glad you kept on! So many of us have experienced this. There is a great book I read called "Get out of your head" You will receive answers to your questions, it takes time, you don't get them all at once. Earnestly seeking understanding is all you need, and some patience. Thanks for sharing your story.

what is that word or term she has used several times? She says it so fast something like religious scrupulosity? What does that mean? Also, I have struggled in knowing when I am guided by the spirit. Am I or do I even feel the promptings of the Holy Ghost. I have struggled with feeling anything. I feel like I get glimpses of the spirit. The weird thing is, I have never had any issues or questions regarding Church History. I had an experience when I was a teenager when I just knew to Church was true and Joseph Smith saw Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. My biggest struggle is knowing Jesus Christ, having a relationship with Him and feeling anything. I even struggle with feelings for my family. I muscle through, but I just feel numb most of the time. But I know this Church is True so I keep pushing forward. Great Episode. Thanks

I felt a lot like that as a young woman. Now at 58, I've had many glimpses of the Spirit. They have coalesced. They have built up in layers over time. Now I don't doubt. I know because of the consistency of the quiet spiritual messages that keep coming, not big things, but multiple small things. Now that i can look back over many years, I see the pattern in my life clearly.

I personally feel that once we learn a lot abour Jesus Christ and start to understand what He did for us... that we can understand WHY we pray to the Father and how incredible the FATHER is. HE loved US so he sent HIS son. A Son that was so amazing...so perfectly loving...so stalwart that we can't even fully understand how amazing HE is and our loving FATHER sent us HIM. Once I realized that... I want to pray to the FATHER for sure. Thanks for sharing your wonderful story and your testimony.

      Hey! It's me. Hailey. :)
I watched the video and now I wish I had clarified that more. No, I didn't see an exotic animal on campus because I gave God a choice between the two signs. I asked to either see an exotic animal (which would be God's sign to me that He wanted me to humble myself, sacrifice all of my questions, etc) or see that random guy (which would be God's sign to me that I should push through each of my problems, struggles, and doubts individually). I gave God a choice and He chose the latter option.

Hailey, I completely understand what you mean by it’s so confusing because so many people believe in their church, and there are so many churches, and they all believe different things, so it becomes very confusing when you look at it that way. I left the church 35 years ago and I searched and searched through many churches, and they were all missing something. Short answer is that I realized I left the true church. If I’m wrong, so are so many others. How can we all be completely certain that we are the ones with the correct religion. My conclusion is that all the other churches in the world are based on intellectual and academic themes and their interpretations of the scriptures are of man. The LDS church is based on spirituality coming from God Himself through the Holy Spirit.

The witness comes after the trial of our faith. It took me years and years and years to understand that. I wanted a SURE testimony. I prayed for it so long and so hard. It didn't come. I remember feeling so sad that maybe I just never would get a testimony like I wanted and needed. It was then that I read through the Book of Mormon with new eyes. I became rather embarrassed when I got to the part about how we are SUPPOSED to have faith. Because when we have knowledge, the time for faith is past!! I was so focused on a SURE knowledge that I totally discounted and wanted to bypass FAITH. Ironically, once I realized that and felt badly that I had tried to insist my Father give me SURE knowledge all those years, then SURE knowledge came. I'm a living testimony of the truth of the statement: knowledge comes after a trial of your faith.
Much love and best wishes to you on your journey ❤

I love to hear that you’ve found so many answers over time, and that you look forward to finding more. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is worth all of the effort, and God does come through for us in His own ways and time, often after the trial of our faith. Thank you for sharing your story! ❤️

  • @johnbushman57

Thank you for sharing that, Haley. You are so wonderful. It makes me feel guilty. Why have you had to go through so much for the trial of your faith? Does God love you more than me because at a young age you have gone through so much? No. He loves us all. But like the truly perfect parent Heavenly Father is, and Jesus included is, they know us, individually. As you said, Jesus told you it was hard for you, but was what was best for you. But when you were told it was harder for Jesus to watch when you thought you were left on your own, forsaken. That was moving.
I've come to realize it isn't always the same test for each of us, but is uniquely geared for what we need.
For me - I don't doubt Heavenly Father or Jesus and never have. But I very much doubt myself, and I see in your story that my own seemingly heavy trials and afflictions have often been actual blessings from God in my own mortal life test. Is it a Pass/Fail test? I just hope it ends where I can be with them once again for eternity.
I hope and pray for a great future for you. You are loved by the most important people in our universe. Of that, I am certain.
    (Love your Pluto metaphor.)
