I'm still baffled at a Supercharged DOHC 4 Valve in the late 20s and early 30s. Hearing that you would think someone was talking about a Mustang Cobra or something
"It's a Doozy" was coined before the Duesenberg, but it fit so well that it became associated with the car. The Petersen's Duesenberg - the one Leslie is introducing here - is one of three the Petersen owned. They selected this one to retain, probably because it is such a representative example. Murphy coachworks in Pasadena bodied about half the Model J chassis, and this Murphy "Convertible Coupe" was the most popular style. It checks all the option boxes save one: hard trunk, rumble seat, dissapearing top, dual side mount spares with hard covers, twin spot lights, and Pilot Ray driving lamps that pivot with the front wheels to guide you 'round a corner. The only popular option it doesn't have is for the sporting owner: the door on the right side ahead of the rear fender for the golf bag compartment.
In another episode they said the factory manual said you can get quite good 10 or 13 miles per gallon. That's not bad at all considering the 5400 + lb weight and horsepower. A modern 5400 lb. truck or van with a 300 horsepower fuel-injected computer-controlled 6L with lock up converter and overdrive gets about the same mpg combined City and highway driving.
@@7x779 If you could afford a Duesenberg you would not worry about the price of the gasoline (back then gas was not very expensive where paved roads and a good number of autos. Way out in the desert, etc. gas was not cheap.
When I lived in Indianapolis I had the pleasure of driving up to Auburn Indiana to the Auburn, Cord, Duesenberg museum. If you ever have the opportunity to go don’t pass it up.
A truly gorgeous car..... and certainly "A Real Duesy!!" Just a slight point of correction: According to my College Classmate Jay Leno, who, as you probably know, owns two or maybe even three Duesenbergs, has said that all of the Model Js and even other models, were all produced in 1928.... but took several years to actually sell. So...... in whatever year a particular car was sold, that was listed as "The Manufacturing Year" when in fact it was "The Sold Year." You may cross reference Jay to confirm this statement. Thanks very much, and overall your presentation was exceptionally good. Bravo!! Ted Schempp, Nashville
I was just thinking the same thing, that I remember your College Classmate Jay Leno has said on several of his doozy episodes. All 500 or so were manufactured in 1928. Clearly since it was just a chassis motor and steering wheel, getting to rest of it built since they were all “ built to order” may have taken some time, which may explain the differing years. Just a thought. Cheers🎉
Great overview, though so much more can be said about this car. I'll leave it at "that's a doozy" and this car epitomizes the coining of the phrase. Thanks for the vid! :)
Damn, I haven’t been to Peterson in years. It’s mainly the drive up the 405 fwy from Long Beach that stymies me. Traffic sucks! But the variety of cars is really mind blowing. Plus once there you got The La Brea tar pits is a couple blocks away plus … lots of other cool LA things to do and see. I’ll go again eventually.
I guess I don't understand what "wheelbase" means, if the chassis was delivered to the body builder, in this case, Murphy, how could they change the wheelbase to the buyers choice?
Nobody measured from 02 60 back then, but a friend of mine with a 69 SS 396 El Camino raced one of these supercharged duesenbergs from a 30 mph roll up to 100 mph and they were dead even. Being around 20 years old and the Duesenberg driver was an old man, he was completely shocked and couldn't believe such an old car could keep up with him and his car which was built at the peak of the muscle car era
@@sturmanaskie I think Jay Leno said they're about 5600 lb. That's really impressive it could keep up with a 40-year newer big block muscle car that was 2000 pounds lighter

This car is not only powerful, it’s a beautiful work of art !
One, if not the greatest cars of all time.
Beautiful and powerful.
Not forgetting the Ford Anglia 105e. ☹

The powerful Duesenberg could pass anything except a gas station.

These classic vehicles embodied automotive art, even the engine is a joy to behold.
Rolling artwork! I highly recommend the ACD museum in Auburn, Indiana.
Would love to own it. But ...
Would settle for just driving it.
WOW what a beauty. Love it!

A rolling work of art
Fortunately, Monogram made very nice 1/24 scale kits for those of us who are...less well-heeled.
Can’t make a video on this car without a test drive
What an amazing machine.
You could buy a 2 family house in Chicago for $5000.00

HP is more like 300 not 400. Considering the low octane fuel available at the time
can we use modern fuel in it ?

It's combustion, not explosion.
No, they are exploding, it's just not detonating, instead it's a deflagration.
