Onward Sets New Pixar Low | Charting with Dan!

#Charting #BoxOffice2020
I know the virus situation is serious, but the fact that, after all this time, the New Mutants release actually IS in doubt *again* is actually pretty funny.
Exactly lmaoo
It's the irony of it. New Mutants being delayed for a million stupid reasons and now that it's supposed to be released for real it might have to be delayed for a legit reason that's not the studio's fault at all
Virus mutates itself to delay the release of the New Mutants. Mutant on mutant crime.
At this point it wouldn't surprise me if it turned out Terry Gilliam was the director.
I think that because they are not expecting to make money out of it anyway, they will release it and then they will blame the virus for its poor performance.
Not joking here-Dan's very grounded Charting coverage has been a canary in the coal mine for me on COVID-19. And the prioritization of human life you've always messaged above and beyond our beloved moving pictures and their receipts is greatly appreciated. You're a good man, Dan!
I do appreciate the tone that weekly charting has been using to show the impact of the current situation. Both directly to the box office and the world in general.
Came to say the same. I live in the UK and appreciate that there are voices that speak rationally about a global crisis (even if it's from an 'entertainment industry' perspective). Dan presents with a genuine voice of concern and gives me a little bit of hope for humanity.
I think Dan particularly has been too apologetic about it. This channel is specifically about movie stuff. You don't need to apologize for mentioning the impact a virus is having on movies and box office numbers.
To me its as silly as always saying "Not that there's anything wrong with that" whenever you mention gay people. Its just oddly conspicuous.
I wonder if Onwards, which is primarily aimed at a younger audience, suffered more than the invisible man, which is aimed at adults, because parents don't want to risk their kids getting ill?
But also, other than people reviewing it, I have seen absolutely no advertisement for Onwards. No trailers, no bus stop ads, no randomness on facebook or youtube. Nothing. This is highly unusual for a pixar movie.
Right? For a movie with Tom Holland and Chris Pratt you think they'd be capitalizing on their names at least, but every ad Ive seen barely even shows what the movie is supposed to be about
Maybe, but frankly, the movie also looks boring. I mean, who knows, the story might be great, but the characters are supposed to be fantasy figures, and they just look like the standard model with pointy ears and blue skin. It's soooooooo boring. As is the way they move in the trailers. As is what is seen of the background in the trailers.
I definitely think that is part of the reason. Kids are more susceptible to the virus and therefore Parents are probably taking more precautions than normal. It’s a shame because it’s a pretty good movie. Much better than it looked.
@@Jerga27 Yea pretty sure it was doomed to have a very poor box office. As I have seen some longer ads on RUclips but all I can literally tell about the film is something about saving their dad. Other then that I have no clue about the film the world it's set in how much it leans on fantasy seeing how the characters aren't human or anything about anything. Which either shows me it was just horrible marketed or the film has little to no actually substance to it. But idk if that is the case as it has a 7.7 on IMDB but then only has a 6.1 from reviewers on Metacritic and a 6.7 from general audience. But then when you got to rotten tomatoes it has an 87 from and then a 97 from the audience. Which either means rotten tomato has some sort of deal with Pixar or has some fake accounts giving really high scores or just everyone who enjoyed the film went to that site instead of Metacritic. So I guess for me who won't ever see this film that it lies somewhere in the middle of a 97 and 67 which would be basically the IMDB score of 7.7. So a solid film that had some good things in it but wasn't amazing.
Tis better to chart with Dan alone than to have never charted at all.
We are now only able to chart with Dan alone on his personal channel
Nothing wrong with a Dan only show, but I do also enjoy Lon.
In the beginning I just wanted a "Dan only" Charting but over the months I've come to enjoy Lon's more scampish nature in addition to Dan's analytical center.
Its almost like a Laurel and Hardy duo.
@@stiimuli Agreed. Dan + Lon are a great duo for Charting Mondays.
FYI for masochists like me: the Meowntdown to seeing “Cats” at home (legitimately) is just seven days.
Cannot wait for the honest trailer
I will watch it on and then I am ready for coronavirus.
I'm glad Fandom is being responsible about WFH and encouraging everyone to stay healthy. Well said, Dan, and I'll be watching for you next Tuesday!
Karen Dover eh, seemed a little fearmongery to me. It’s not like the Screen Junkies folk are a high-risk demographic. Sure, if you think you’re sick stay home. But is quarantine really worth it here?
TrekBeatTK better safe than sorry
@@thepenguinftw work from home
@@TrekBeatTK They're not quarantining themselves, they're limiting in-office (and therefore commute, lunch, and general interaction) time. I think it's surprising that Dan's levelheaded explanation would be interpreted as fearmongering, but it doesn't matter if they are high risk - which you can't actually know because there are factors other than age are risk factors - the point of healthy members of society restricting their chance of infection is to protect the high risk and control the spread.
I'd also like to add that precaution is not the same as panic and it seems to me like they are going out of their way to maintain the status quo as far as video output even though that means they're working harder than ever to get everything coordinated and completed in advance.
So, this is the last Charting ever. At least as part of Screen Junkies. Pretty wild.
"If you like me and nobody else, you're welcome!". A very fun and funny way to start the video. Thanks for taking the time to do the episode. I know Tuesday was a very busy and stressful day at SJN. Take care and be safe!
Always thought charting should be on Tuesday... gives Dan more time to make charts 👍
As it comes out so late for me, I always see it as a Tuesday release. This now makes it Wednesday before I see it. Fully understand the circumstances though, and any charting is better than none
On this week’s episode of Charting with Dan:
Was ‘Onward’ able to move *FORWARD* towards box office success this weekend?
Is the *PRESENCE* of ‘The Invisible Man’ still being *FELT?*
Was ’The Way Back’ able to *PUSH BACK* the competition?
Did ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ have to *SPRINT* this weekend to catch up with the competition?
Hi, I’m Dan Murrell
and this is ‘Charting with Dan’ on Fandom Entertainment!
practically write themselves! Onward seemed weird. I just didnt care about it.
Thank you for your kind heart. Be safe, much love to you all at Fandom all they way from Mexico, peace!
Does anyone else see the 3 white squares on the bottom right of the screen or am I losing it? lol Anyway, I loved this like I always love Charting with Dan even if the video is a bit short today. Although with all the pre-tapes they recorded today, I can't blame Dan lol
I’m glad y’all at Screen Junkies are taking the necessary precautions during this time of crisis and I’m very thankful that y’all are still able to put out videos during this time. Screen Junkies makes my week (especially Charting!) so I’m wishing y’all so much wellness❤️
I feel bad. I actually thought the movie was pretty good but no one could see it because of the Coronavirus going around.
I will probably go see Onward but am waiting for a couple weeks to see it on a non-crowded cheap movie day.
I went Thursday night. Only 12 people in my theater.
C.Dat.GuyOverThere yeah bad sign. Marketing also seemed to be down this time round.
Yes it was very good. I think Disney really slept on this one and failed with the marketing. I'd say even the trailers don't do it justice.
@@EdmundSnow98 better go now, things might get scarier by then. I'm not living in the US but we have less cases here and they're still closing down multiplexes
That comparison between 2020 and 2019 takings was very stark, making the impact clear. Great episode Dan.
I'm glad you guys don't have to come in every day. I'm in Madrid and we're working from home as well as more and more places, including schools, close. Stay safe, Dan and co! And thanks for all you do.
Thank you Dan for all you do! As an Italian on lockdown I appreciate a good video to keep me entertained but also someone who talks about the coronavirus in a serious way
I do think Covid-19 might have played a role in Onward. Maybe it was still destined to be a less strong Pixar film, but I think parents are more inclined to avoid movie theaters in light of an illness than, say, The Invisible Man's target audience.
I love Dan SO MUCH! i do miss my love Roth tho.
this show is so underappreciated, as well as this channel. over the last 2 years I slowly have stopped watching any other movie channels and now stick with the always funny, upbeat and informative Screen Junkies. thank you guys for sticking with your original format and people it is def. appreciated.
PS. I still have the gif. of Idris Elba cat disappearing, if you want it lol
xoxo love from Maryland
I still hate that Roth is no longer on this show with him.
Anytime Roth and Dan aren’t in the same video is a tragedy.
Hard agree.
Movie Pass was operating when Incredibles 2 was out
If big IF the box office is not being more impacted further by the covid-19 pandemic... Narrator "It was,"
Stay safe Dan, Love from Portugal
I feel like Onward suffered because of marketing I saw nothing about Onward a lot of my friends and family had no idea that a new Pixar film was even coming out. A lack of marketing behind it definitely helped the lower box office result
Well, I was aware of Onward, but the movie just looks "meh". It was the same with The good Dinosaur, I just didn't like the animation AT ALL.
If the studios wanted to engender goodwill I really think that they ought to release more movies direct to streaming. People need to be safe and they something to cheer up about. Having movies to look forward to and enjoy can make a difference when the news seems dismal and when people have to be home because work, quarantine, etc.
People already have an abundance of films, shows, content to watch.
No one "needs" to be able to watch these new cinema releases at home.
Yes everyone, stay safe. But while you are taking the appropriate precautions, DON'T BE AFRAID TO LIVE YOUR LIVES!
Love the show. Always enjoy the deep dives on the business!. Miss the camaraderie but hoping you are all safe and sound!
Stay safe Dan! (And all the screen junkies)
Big hugs from Switzerland. Here the situation is getting pretty serious. I'll be here as always, since I'm a huge Dan fan!! Stay safe!
A live show from Dan's couch could be fun. Lol
Stay safe everyone
That's what I was thinking. They could film the show from home over a video call. If they are still working on Honest Trailers, I assume they are using document sharing software like google docs or calling each other to figure stuff out.
I genuinely think this movie would have done better if it wasn’t for the fear of the coronavirus and if the marketing was a little bit better. I’m bummed to see it not performing well because it is really good! It’ll be interesting to see if Mulan has enough interest going for it to get people to still go and see it. It will be interesting to see play out.
Mads415 the real story about Mulan will be if/when it will open in China. I’m sure Disney was banking on it doing huge numbers there, and I don’t see that happening with such a small amount of time between now and when it’s supposed to come out.
Dan mentioned that since "The Invisible Man" did fairly well its second week, it would indicate that Coronavirus fear was not a factor. However, I think that many parents (including myself) didn't want to risk bringing their children to the movies. It's different for adult-oriented films.
Mads415 we’ll now we don’t get to see Mulan‘s opening for a while longer.
Absolutely loved Onward. The trailers/advertising was a bit 'eh', but I'm glad I decided to go see it.
Literally got the alert for this as the credits for Onward were rolling for me. I really liked it!
How about calculating the butts in seat count to see the reduction of number of people who go to theaters?
This sounds like a great idea. The overall butts in seats for all movies in the cinema this time last year compared to now. It would definitely be interesting!
Great idea.
I had to wait an extra day and get a Charting without Lon, but bot only is Dan more than enough, I'm happy that Fandom takes care of its employees! So thank you for my smaller but just as great Charting!
If COVID 19 keeps hurting the box office Bad Boys for life could have a legit chance at being in the 2020 domestic top 10
Be safe Dan. Speaking for myself, I would still watch the show even if you streamed it from your couch.
Thank you for acknowledging the season of Lent, Dan. Two liturgical calendar shout outs on Charting in two weeks: give it up for Lent!
Pun intended. 😉
I just happened to pause at 6:08 and that face needs to be a gif or something 🤣
But yeah from a purely macroeconomic perspective, the effects of covid-19 will be studied for years, if not decades to come. Like from that POV alone, it’s fascinating. Of course devastating...but fascinating. Like a car crash, you can’t stop looking at it.
Thumbs up for that gif 👍
This movie was great... the ending omg so good
First Cow is an udder success
Onward was a complete blast - including the requisite Pixar sourced tears.
My partner and I went to see onward earlier today, and there were only 6 of us watching it. I really quite enjoyed it. Before it finished I already wanted a sequel. Now I did start playing d&d when I was 12 so I may be biased.
Netflix, Disney Plus and Amazon about get there check book out over next 6 weeks. Many will take deals I think.
what does this comment even mean
Love ya man, hope y'all stay safe during this pandemic. Looking forward to more videos and updates over the coming days and weeks!
I'm gonna see Bloodshot Thursday, I'm excited. I'm not going to see the motion picture that was originally billed as "Red state vs Blue state."
A treat, Dan! As always!
I love this show so much! Thanks, Dan, for carrying on even when everything is pretty crazy. I would say it is a nice distraction, but unfortunately I think this show will be a reflection of what is going on in the real world for a while yet to come.
I actually saw a movie trailer for the new mutants yesterday and I immediately thought about the count down. I was like "oh shoot they actually made a trailer."
The virus is serious and devastating...but the universe *really* doesn’t want New Mutants to be released. 🤣
If I don't catch Covid-19 before Black Widow's opening weekend I'll catch it then.
...
Stay safe Dan ! I'm from France and I love this show.
Dan is my favourite.
I wanted to go to the movies, but with the virus out there I decided not to.
I go to the movies 1-2 times a week and I’ve kept that routine for around two years but I have been avoiding enclosed spaces and have not visited my theater in two weeks. I am certain the unfortunate situation we are currently experiencing with the Corona virus is making many film lovers, and parents, reconsider leaving their homes unnecessarily. It saddens me to know how much the film industry will suffer and how many theater workers will probably have their hours cut as attendance decreases.
If the COVID-19 crisis continues to escalate and has an increased effect on the box office, do you think Disney could make the decision to forego a theatrical release for New Mutants make it available to stream on Disney Plus and/or Hulu?
I hope Dan still does his show from home!
Much love to you and everyone at screen junkies!
Hi Dan! 👋 I love your show, whether you have co-host or not 😊 great job as always, and thank you for making the show even though the circumstances are difficult right now 😔 we appreciate all your hard work, stay safe please!!!
Thank you for that comparison of the top 10 worldwide box offices between this year and last year - that is a harrowing difference. China really is so integral to the movie business these days. Glad the contagion is already slowing down over there now and hopefully they’ll be reopening cinemas and businesses again soon, heralding a turnaround for all of us across the world. I just want things to get back to normal soon...
Ty Dan, stay safe. ❤️
Makes sense. Adults, teenagers seeing minimizing the situation or in denial, so they see the rated R horror movie. Adults with families stayed home.
I from Saudi Arabia and love the show. I hope this disease end very soon. thanks Dan.
LIKE!!! I kind of like the shorter format. a nice concise 20 minutes. I also like it when you compare and contrast current and past movies with charts and graphs.
Dan, you could just use a cheap webcam and record a low budget Charting at home if need be. It would be just as good. This is the one SJ/Fandom show that could do that.
We don't want you putting yourself at risk just to give us a show. #protectDan =P
Stay safe out there, everyone!
Thanks! You too
Got worried that Dan was going to say my favorite show on SJU was going on hold due to the change in work schedule. Whew, that was a close one! Monday or Tuesday, all the same as long as we get our show 😁
Dan is honoring daylight savings, he fell forward to Tuesdays
I like the dan solo show!! You know your stuff and make it interesting on your own
Great - no two presenter blah blah blah, just straight on with the numbers and the story/ies behind them. More please.
I saw the movie twice. It was so great.
I'm getting worried for A Quiet Place Part II
Oh crap, you're right. That's one I'm excited for and want to see do well.
@@ragnarokstar19 it's delayed
@@myfilms999 Oh, thanks for letting me know. Sucky news, though. It was one of the few I really wanted to go out and see. But it's for the best.
As much as I love SJU for the current breaking news or even just No News Day with the Honest Trailers team, first and foremost I wish you all to be safe. Wishing all of you at SJU the best and if we have to live with pre-tapes for a bit to ensure that you are safe-so be it. Thank you all at SJU for the laughs and brightening many a day and now for sending your best out to the World and so do i return that to all of you. Take care all.
Also in Charting news, Joker and Star Wars passed Toy Story 4 on last year's worldwide chart.
Hey, I'm from Spain and the situation here is also escalating, there are more than 1600 people infected here and the situation looks to be getting worse. So, yeah, the international market is going to get affected. Many flights here have been forbidden, but I don't know... Who knows! xD PS: the countdown is a big coincidence
I was kind of surprised when I checked out movies playing on the Sunday before last, and saw several theaters showing "Onward" at 3:00 PM (in Portland, Oregon). So I guess there were some early screenings. The reason I'm probably waiting to see it, (or as I was joking with my kids, waiting to see the new Simpson's movie with an extra-long Pixar short after,) is it's a movie I was going to see with my grand-kids, but (as you so aptly put it) I'm not seeing it because of "real-world concerns."
As always, thank you so very much all, for your calculations, information, observations and video.
As far as the "real-world concerns" and Fandom (/ Screen Junkies), take care of yourselves first, please, and we'll make it thru till you can be back as usual.
Good on yall. Stay safe everyone
YEESSS! I really thought there’d be no charting this week!
Here in Denmark they made a ban against all activities that gathers more than a 1000 people in the same room. Concerts, movie theatres are going to be hit hard.
Since the box office is clearly being hurt, delay all the movies being released for the next month or two. Some theatres will have to close in the US, but hopefully most can stay open on a more limited schedule, with more time being spent keeping the theaters clean, spraying chairs, doors, etc. Would love to see some re-releases. Dark Knight, Titanic, Apollo 13. Movies are meant to be seen on the big screen and it would be great to see some older movies in theaters again. Things like Fathom events are great, but they’re expensive and have very limited locations and showtimes.
Well I went to a 9:55 IMax for Onward, only myself and three other people in the theater. As a fairly long time D&D player, I thoroughly enjoyed Onward, loved the subtle nods to RPG's, and fantasy tropes (without causing a health risk) I hope it has legs... with purple socks.
Love to Lon and Dan from Ohio!
Dan would be like that Mad Money guy with the numbers soon. Going crazy from his house about the box office.... and then Alex Jones. Pray for him
Nothing wrong with a Dan only show. Hopefully the extra day means more charts.
10:20 Loving the international posters for Onward and Sonic. 👍
Countdown to Dune - 283 days
As somebody who normally goes to daytime showings of movies, I'll probably see The Invisible Man this week in n empty theatre! Hey, those chains need supporting too...
You also stay safe, Dan
It will hit the us for sure! It may be later, but it will hit. The peak is still to come. I'm From Germany and you guys have no idea
I truly believe now that New Mutants will go straight to Disney+. It'll help drive subscriptions from those that either want or need to stay home.
😱 no Lon.
I'm really worried about the long term affects the coronavirus is going to have on the entertainment industry. I wonder whether we'll be able to tell as this year rolls along or whether we'll have to wait till next year to truly find out. I am glad we have Charting to get an honest answer about what's happening though. It's not easy or happy but to get some information that's straightforward is nice.
two quicks thoughts on Pixar's decline at the box office (though not necessarily in quality of movie):
1. similar to Dan's point on audiences having more choices on which animated movies to see, animators have more choices on where to work. This has democratized quality, so it's not just that there are other animated options, but there are good animated options. This could be happening even within the Mouse House, as Disney Pixar's own talent is split between the two studios (had there not been Tangled, Frozen, and Moana, for example many of those people may have worked on Good Dinosaur).
2. Pixar could be going through a generational lull. The first generation of kids who grew up with Pixar (born in the late 80s and early 90s) are now around 30, busy, and do not have movie-going-aged children yet. When (or if) those original Pixar kids do have children, Pixar could get a nostalgia driven push at the box office. The live action Disney remake surge coincided with the kids of the Disney renaissance (born in the early 80s) having taking their own families to the movies. even ever-green products go through waves of success, and lulls do not always signal a long term decline.
this is as much thought exercise and explanation, but interesting (to me, at least)
The film studios could (and just might) release all of their movies on demand for about the price of a movie ticket. Of course if they do that and it turns out to be very profitable for the film studios, then that would most likely kill the theaters and cause the loss of jobs.
The problem with that is that 1 seat = ~$10 whereas 1 home media purchase = $25-25 which could be watched by a family of 5 or shared through an account. Maybe it would benefit them to do first-run streams for $35-40, but I think it would still be more lucrative for studios to shelve their movies until later. Then there's also the risk of piracy* to think about.
EDIT: Sorry, PIRACY not privacy.
With Bad Boys likely to lose it first place in the next couple of weeks, could you break down how this movie stacks up against the other movie the directors have released? The difference in box office is always crazy for first time Hollywood directors and I just love those charts.
The 2019 movies this time last year were just better than the movies this year. Onward is the first movie I actually enjoyed in 2020.
If it wasn't for the Coronavirus this would have made more money !
Thiago Couto I disagree. I think the virus will be used as scapegoat but the fact is it was poorly marketed, got mixed reviews, and no one cares about it.
Perhaps. I just haven't really seen much advertisement or hype around this film at all though. It really does feel like another Good Dinosaur level film. Something about the art direction for this film is also just off and doesn't feel like Pixar.
I hope Dan wears his Friday the 13th shirt for this Friday.
Jonathan Ortega there’s no live shows on Fridays for the next while, only on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so we won’t be able to tell.
