In the 70s it was so hard to appreciate it all because we had so so so so much great music to compare it to boy I wish I knew then what we don’t have now !
Al Steward does not get the recognition that he deserves. I remember first hearing Year of the Cat and I was just amazed with the entire song. The melody, the storyline, the music and the sax solo. I purchased Year of the Cat and the follow up album Time Passages. After 24 Carrots Al disappeared from the charts. He kept recording and has released many albums. Though the years I have revisited Al's music and purchased some of his albums prior to Year of the Cat. Also the song Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty which came out about a year later like the other bookend to Year of the Cat. Both songs are very melodic and has that dreamy feel and both have great sax solos. Just thought I share my thought with you.
On the Border is one of my all time favorite songs!! I will never tire of hearing it. I love to watch people's reactions to it as well. I can appreciate true musicianship when I hear it. I'm a new subscriber.😊
Fabulous choice!!! I love this band and on the border is great song! Thank you !! 👍👍
Al Stewart is a legend to those that follow all his repertoire of classics. A genius lyricist and musician, and of course, a singing historian. Salute!!
Great song choice. I agree with all points; great production, great songwriting, great vocal and guitar work. This probably would make my Top 100 tracks of all time list, that's saying a lot. Got to see Al twice, once at The Bottom Line in NYC and once at My Father's Place in Long Island. Both venues were fantastic and are now both gone. :(
RUclips has a live version of this from a few years ago that extends the guitar playing and amps up the rock sound of the band.
Yay ! You did Al Stewart ! The whole album is a beauty ! Love this, Broadway Hotel, and (of course) the title track.
One Stage Before and Broadway Hotel are my favorites from YotC. They are all great!
@@rac7773 Just saw this. Oh man, there's just something ethereal about Broadway Hotel. Definitely an underrated gem from the album.
@@alloallie Stupidly, Janus put this phenomenal song as the flip side of YotC. It should have been the follow up smash hit.
@@rac7773 In all fairness, though, "On the Border" was also a great track for a single. I loved every single track on the Year of the Cat album...except one.
@@alloallie Which one??? There are only a handful of songs in Al's catalog which I fail to rate at least a 7 (none of which are on Cat).
Al steward is the best musical poet.
Gold
Great song from a fantastic album. All killer - no filler!
i saw him open for Fairport Convention in 73, right before Past, Present and Future hit the sates. He sat on a stool with a 12 string and played the WHOLE album!! Then Fairport came out with Sandy Denny and Jean Luc Ponti!! Still the best concert of my life! (and i've seen a lot of bands)
states. sorry.
@@karenmandeville7116 You saw Ponti? I've loved him since the 80's and who doesn't love Sandy Denny, for crisake. Did Ponti fiddle with Fairport or was he with his own band? Actually, I had secret crush on Sandy. It broke my heart when she died. You are one lucky duck.
We all have those moments. Al Stewart is one of my faves but I have never got to see him and I have seen a lot of bands. I didn't know Jon Luc played with FC. I will have to listen again. I just bought one of his solo CDs but I haven't got to listen to it yet. I have more CDs to listen to lined up than I have time left to listen.
Thankyou brilliant tracks on the boarder and year of the cat
Love it when Peter White joined Al
"Year of the cat" & "Time passages" are two legendary albums by Al Stewart with Peter White, Tim Renwick, Phil Kenzie, Peter Wood, Stuarf Elliot, Andrew Powell and Alan Parson at the Abbey Road studios for the finest pop music in the history.
MASTERPIECE 😊
Great choice !
Wonderful reaction to one of my favourite songwriters !
"Famous Last Words" is a great album. Peter White is all over that album also, some of his best work. "Lord Grenville" is such a great tune off year of the cat.. One of the greatest songwriters of the twentieth century and beyond. There is no such thing as a bad tune, only tunes you don't like. Your audio is a bit low by the way. or maybe it is because I just had Duran Duran Cranking on my old timee stereo.
I got to see him in Germany 78 or 79 open for Rush
Has anyone ever told you that you look incredibly like Daniel Day Lewis?
Many years ago, when he had a big hit movie out, late 80’s or early 90’s, I can’t remember. Someone told me that.
I understand Al Stuart was. Scottish!! My grandparents were from Scotland!! Loved Yeàr of the cat!!
Yes, and I’ve got a wee bit of Scottish blood in me as well.
I like your review. You’re very knowledgeable. Your sound sucks. Fix that and you’ll be great.
The live version is better.
If I’m not mistaken, there’s an anniversary edition of the album/cd that includes a live recording of the 1976 concert I attended in Seattle.
