    What I’m curious about is what the weights are made of. If they plan to send down multiple drones to map the ocean, and each drone drops those weights to return to the surface every time, then I hope those weights are eco-friendly because there’s no retrieving them.

      Lol I'm glad I'm not the only one with this question, I already posted my comment about it before I saw this.. I hope it's made out of a dissolve-able material.. that wouldn't bother the eco. :/

    It's a pretty cool concept, but what I don't like is that you drop the weights so the vehicle can surface, and you just leave the weights on the bottom of the ocean floor. That is very counterproductive, you should leave no trace behind.

    What retrieves the weights y'all leave behind? o.O Or is the weights made out of a dissolve-able material? How do you decide where to drop them? Are the images you receive realtime or you only get them when you bring the equipment back to the surface; in order to know where to drop them? I really hope they aren't effecting anything when they drop from the equipment... @_@

    So why do you have to drop weights to come back up? Could releasing a gas into a pouch or something like that work? Or would that just take an insane amount of gas to counter the pressure?

    • @OceanX
      @OceanX  5 лет назад

      The gas would have to go down separately somehow, or else it would be counteracting the weight of the bot from the start. The weights are an easy way for the bot to go down and then become suddenly lighter.

    • @TheAgentTexas
      @TheAgentTexas 5 лет назад +1

      @@OceanX But the gas will only create buoyancy if it takes up a lot of space. If it is compressed into a canister thus not creating too much buoyancy then it should work if you release the gas into an inflatable pocket then it should allow it to surface.

    • @OceanX
      @OceanX  5 лет назад

      @@TheAgentTexas One advantage of the weights is they will rust off on their own and let the Orpheus return to surface if for some reason there's a fault.

    • @TheAgentTexas
      @TheAgentTexas 5 лет назад +1

      @@OceanX Hmmm, so the iron weights will rust away, but wouldn't that be bad for the ocean environment (of course a small fraction of the garbage that is already being put into the ocean, but could be harmful non the less)? When iron oxidizes is there a natural process that will recycle the oxidized iron? Also, I'm still curious about the gas. I'm sure there is a great answer to why it doesn't use gas, but if the curator of the channel doesn't know the technical answer then that's completely fine. Thanks for humoring me with this discussion btw.

    • @mollycurran5560
      @mollycurran5560 5 лет назад +1

      @@TheAgentTexas Good point on all fronts. As @OceanX had mentioned, the weights can be released when the vehicle has completed it's mission or as a passive release if all else fails. If the system dies, for whatever reason, corrodible links will break allowing the weights to fall, in turn making the vehicle buoyant enough to come to the surface. You make a great point about the canister and we have done similar things on other vehicles! Depending on the pressures the vehicle will experience, gas may not be the best option, but using something nearly incompressible, like mineral oil, to increase or decrease the vehicle volume using a solid volume(canister) and a soft volume(some sort of pocket) is a great way to trim buoyancy.

    So everytime this robot is coming back up you drop metal weights to the ground. Why not just install 4 other fans to dive down or up?

    • @donethos
      @donethos 5 лет назад

      Because of the amount of energy required to power the propellers, and the spectrum of potential problems that could occur from utilizing them.

    • @sonyabunyan5141
