    Starlight is one of the easiest places to make badly I don't even know why

    Sorry for there being no video yesterday - still getting used to this whole self-employed lark and keep mismanaging my time a little. Ended up it being 11pm and I had several unfinished projects and nothing video-ready. This might happen occasionally as these videos are quite time-consuming, so apologies in advance.
    I'd recommend following me twitter if you haven't already so you know when a video is coming - as the rare instances where I miss an upload; you can bet I've guiltily tweeted out a grovelling apology : twitter.com/norespawns

    Speaking of knocking junk over, i'd say the best part of the place anywhere mod isn't being able to negate the rug and pillar glitches, it's being able to make objects either static or dynamic at will.

    As an x box person, I used the WHOLE settlement, like that shit was a second diamond city and no frame loss due to some mods that downgraded the graphics like a nudge. Also I can turn the screen on and play movies! It's the shit

    Everyone seems to hate the more undulous terrain in settlements. It's probably just me, but I seem to have a harder time when trying to build something aesthetic to me in the more flat settlements. I find the more convoluted topography brings out the creativity in my builds - frustration included. I've tried doing something with Starlight three times (it's an awesome space), but my general love of asymmetrical elements doesn't seem to pay off in that space. You've done a decent job here, but it's just missing that uniqueness that you have managed to bring to other settlements. Just my thoughts. Kepe up the great, inventive work!

  • @davebias

    I think you're simply THE most creative person making Fallout 4 build videos and as a PS4 user myself, I'm thrilled that you show what can be accomplished with the vanilla game (and judicious use of glitching). Most other youtubers who have been focused on Fallout 4 are dying on the vine now that it's "over" - but it's clear that you could keep going for a long time. I've posted no videos myself, but I've ripped off most of your ideas for my own settlements (and riffed on a few of them with nice effect). My favorite thing is the "fishbowl" fusion generator, which I have in four or five settlements now. And I'm nuts about junk fences. You're right - they're just super fun to make. The big difference is that I've been playing ONE game save since I started. Just one. And so now I'm not simply having framerate problems, but I'm having serious crashing problems. My Nuka World Red Rocket is pretty much off limits to me now. Every time I open the workshop - CRASH. And it's also happened to me in a few other places. I think this is combination of reasons. For example, I have 15-20 settlers at every settlement AND I've got loads of stuff glitched together AND I'm increasing the build limit in most settlements with the "drop guns" glitch AND, like you, all of my resources have been scavenged or purchased (often using Jet!) - which means every workshop has many hundreds of items. Have you had similar problems exceeding what the PS4 can handle in terms of the size of the game save? Also, have you had any special difficulty with NW Red Rocket crashing the game?

    I actually spent the time climbing the starlight building from the outside and using track lighting to light up the starlight name and planet at the top lol. Didn't look as good as I'd hoped, next time I'll use neon and see how it looks. Great fort though man your walls are the most natural and realistic walls of any builder I'd seen on RUclips. Great idea mixing warehouse and junk fence, looks amazing.

    Hey Davey, let me just say your builds are amazing and inspiring and not to mention lore friendly, which I think is a key detail to making settlements interesting. Its a shame that all but a few RUclipsrs with mods rarely put this much effort and thought into their builds like you do, but I appreciate the time you put into your vids they've inspired me to post my own content on my channel though none of it is as good as your work. I look forward to seeing more good fallout content (if ps4 users actually get mods) from your channel, and thanks for inspiring me. :)

    Have you considered turning a large settlement, such as Sanctuary or Spectacle Island, into multiple 'towns'?

    • @matthewlev1342
      @matthewlev1342 7 лет назад +12

      Erich Salvesen that's a good idea!

    • @erichsalvesen
      @erichsalvesen 7 лет назад +2

      Granted, the system doesn't work well with that idea but it's easy enough to nudge the plebs to stay in certain areas once they spawn.
      But for people who like the idea of small focused structures, this could help keep the number of settlements down; I hate defending settlements and only use 2-3 in any given play through.

    • @cabroncesto
      @cabroncesto 7 лет назад

      Erich Salvesen so you're telling me u haven't done that? Spectacle island is a city on my guy, like starlight drive in, and sanctuary. And u haven't done that?

    • @olliemakesvideos125
      @olliemakesvideos125 5 лет назад +4

      Well, what I done for my Spectacle Island was instead of having the main town with all the houses and shops in one concentrated area and then having it completely walled off, I had my main marketplace where the Greenhouse and the pre-war bombed out structure is and then had the residents' houses spread over across the island so every settler had their own sort of acreage.

    • @justbeyondthecornerproduct3540

    Really love this build, and it's given me a good idea for what to do with it for my next playthrough! Had a lot of trouble with it the first time around, because I both wanted to have it look halfway decent and like any other wasteland settlement, but then also have it secretly be a Railroad settlement with a place to hide the teleporter and such... Failed completely, lol.

  • @roberthartley1817
    @roberthartley1817 7 лет назад

    I like how your boxcar security post could also kind of double as like the mayor of the town looking down on his settlers or giving like major speeches. Similar to Immortan Joe in Mad Max Fury Road. "It is buy my hands, you will rise from the ashes of this world!" Fucking brilliant mate. Idk if that was intentional but beautifully executed regardless.

  • @joejoe6622
    @joejoe6622 7 лет назад

    After watching your last video on Starlight I was inspired to create something there. I took the idea of the dinner area and the entrance but turned mine into a medical office. I also used a few busses in the walls where settlers lived and turned the area where the Workshop is into a massive warehouse. The main feature of the settlement has to be the battle arena which is located near the old film screen.

  • @SecularFelinist
    @SecularFelinist 7 лет назад

    I found using that the wooden misc item that looks like a pier (the one that's flat with legs) makes for a great wall superstructure. Then use junk walls on either side to make a very strong-looking wall. It can take a bit of effort if you make a multi-story wall, but it looks great.
    Also, you can make a nice platform on the top of the projector building at Starlight. Wind platforms and stairs around the structure to the top and build from there. Pleasing view, and a good place to put stuff you don't want to be messed with by NPCs.

    Hey Davey, I'm not sure if this has been suggested yet (I thought I'd cover myself first beforehand); but I was thinking that you could use the elevators from the Contraptions dlc to construct a pretty neat Power Armour structure: You could place the Power Armour on the elevator with a Power Armour stand and assorted armoury-related workbenches, tool racks, etc. (basically create an area that your character would repair/construct power armour within). Then when you call for the elevator, the suit either drops from the ceiling (from another level) or RISES THROUGH THE FRICKEN GROUND (with the workspace). Neat eh? Either that or I'm just as mad as always (it's probably the latter). Cheers, love the builds as always.

    I'm curious, Davey, on why you mention FPS so frequently in this particular video. It doesn't seem like the largest settlement you've ever built, and even when you mention Sanctuary, I recall you defending the FPS dips as being quite reasonable/playable.
    Is there anything new that you're doing that is more resource hungry? Cause again, this Starlight Drive-in seems actually pretty small compared to the potential build size of other locations & here.

    • @norespawns
      @norespawns  7 лет назад

      It's more that when I started this new save after that major Sanctuary - I actually REALLY noticed the difference. I'd gotten so used to how clippy the old Sanctuary was that I'd just stopped noticing the different if I'm honest.
      The things that seem to affect it the most are lights and decorative items. I basically just build until I start to see some kind of change in the FPS and then try and wind things down a little.

    I think mostly to involve trains in the build, but I'm planning to turn Starlight into my main 'city' settlement, aka lot's of trading posts, lot's of open areas, markets, hotels, etc. Basically I'm making a number of supply lines converge on Starlight, and turning it into the Commonwealth's Hub.
    I'm still deciding if I want to put all my unique shopkeeps in Sanctuary or Starlight, but probably Sanctuary because it's where one of them has to go first anyway. Starlight would be a long term project, next to Storm's EndI mean The Castle.
    ...there's a lightning bolt on the Minutemen flag, there's quests to defend it from waves of enemies, and it's right on the coast. Fuck yes I'm calling The Castle Storm's End.
    One thing to note of coming from PC is the amount of stuff I have access to without DLC. Those barricades for one thing. Now I see why people complain about it.

    • @erichsalvesen
      @erichsalvesen 7 лет назад

      SirthOsiris make all of your provisioners Go To Starlight.
      Pack it full of as many settlers as you can inflate your charisma to allow and have every one of them either some sort of shop keeper or guard.
      As it would be supply lined to 35 other settlements, you wouldn't have to waste time with food production. Any one settlement dedicated to food would compensate.

    • @SirthOsiris
      @SirthOsiris 7 лет назад

      Nah, I got a plan, where Starlight is just in the center of a number of settlements in the north. County Crossing might serve the same purpose in the east, but on a smaller scale, and still sending people to Starlight. Hangman's Alley will also be an entrance point for a few settlements going north, through Oberland Station.
      I'm going to use Paint to figure it out.

      Also, did you place random carrots around in the dirt? If there's one thing to take away from this build, I think it's that. I like that touch.

    god i loved necromunda! for me rodent headwear was a must! not sure if it would be possible to make a FO4 settlement round those guys but most of the gangs could work if you cherry picked your settlers

  • @LadyJazhara
    @LadyJazhara 7 лет назад

    How did you get rid of this annoying skeletons inside the settlement? The ones that can't be moved....

    • @norespawns
      @norespawns  7 лет назад +2

      drop a minigun on the floor and (outside of the workshop) hold select so you're 'carrying' it. You can then use that to nudge the skeletons out of the settlement. Grenades also work.

      Thanks! Will check that! I hoped they would disappear after building some concrete floor upon them, but... next time you travel back to the settlement...whoop! they are back on top :D
