We use our trout landing net for these guys, really any net will do, but this is one of our favorites. It has a lot of area to catch them while they are running, and the holes are small enough to snag them which makes a deadly combination.

Another great option for catching crawfish. Just get up in the current and start flipping rocks above where you have it set up and you will get a boat load quickly. We also love seines for catching hellgrammites, one of the best smallmouth baits around.

My best trick for catching live cray fish for bait: Find an old barrel hoop or better, 2 and tape them together so you have a hoop that's 4" or more high. Put the barrel hoop around the rock you want to lift where you think a crayfish is hiding and push the gravel up around the hoop so there are no gaps underneath. They can back up fast and a lot of times flit away in the silty murk and you can see it happen. With the barrel hoop around the rock he's captive inside the hoop. Let the water clear so you can see him then you can back him into a tin can and dump him in your minnow bucket from there. Caught 18 in 25 minutes last Friday.

Here in Oregon there is no regulations on crawdads. No limit no license.
Y’all need to come down to the Atchafalaya swamp area and learn what crawfishing is, not one at a time. Traps full of way bigger ones than y’all have. Here in Louisiana we don’t say crawdad or crayfish. The old timers used square nets that had a metal thingy you picked up with a stick. They use what’s called beef melt. Y’all come on down to a big crawfish boil and you will never waste your time with those little babies anymore.

That's true probably should have covered that. We use traps, but we like to catch them with our hands the best. While it takes more work to catch less crawdaddies, it is a lot more active!
