The funny thing about the 4th puzzle is that if the pawn had already been on the board it's actually a fairly simple mate to find, but having to construct the mating setup yourself makes everything more difficult. Goes to show how hard it must be to create these compositions in the first place

I’ve been thinking lately it would be awesome to see a new series like “guess the eval”. Like guess the elo, but various positions are shown, the stockfish eval covered up, positional considerations are discussed, and then the eval is revealed. I think it could tremendously informative and also an interesting way to discuss some of the more nuanced concepts. For instance you could even demonstrate the importance of specific pieces and their positions on the board by comparing the evals of the same board but with one piece changed/moved. Please consider it! Keep up the good work!

the last puzzle was my favorite . allowing the player to decide where their final piece is placed to start is brilliant. i had thought about placing the pawn there but.my.mond was jumping around with all of those potential places that you want that pawn in a normal game

What if in the last one, we go pawn on f4 and move B anywhere in the a2-g8 diagonal(say g8) then, black gets to play only move g5 and Bf7 back is mate. But ofcourse, it would be a crime to not play en passant to force mate.

My favorite odd puzzle is the mate in one where you have to promote a pawn to a knight… a knight of the opposite color. The FIFE rules have since been changed so that you must promote to a piece of your own color.

i actually know a puzzle similar to the last one, except the twist is you have to realize that blacks last move was a pawn push, so you could do en pessant and it was mate in 2 through that move
I believe I found a different solution for the last puzzle. Put the pawn on f4, and move your bishop to e6 (d5, c4, b3, a2 would also have been fine). Black is forced to push the pawn to g5, only legal move. Now white can mate with the bishop back on f7. Is this correct?
No. The pawn can now capture the knight(as it is no longer pinned by the bishop) and it's no longer mate in 2. If you try placing the pawn on h4 or f4 and moving the bishop to e8(so to maintain the pin), you stalemate. If you put the pawn on f2 or h2, Black can play Kg5, both of which is not mate in two. Finally, if you put the pawn on f2 and plays f4, black is forced to take with en passant check, forcing you to move your king. It's a mate in three, but the puzzle demands mate in two.
In the 2nd puzzle, that tactic with Qg5, blocking the check and sacrificing the white queen to deflect the black queen off the light squares and prevent further checks, has a specific name I'm trying to remember. I think it's called a Novotny Theme or something like that. Definitely one of the coolest tactical ideas in chess, right up there with the super rare plachutta! (A term I only know b/c Agadmator did a video on it once lol) I've also see puzzle 3 before on Agadmator's channel. I remembered that the overall idea was to force the black king to h5 and deliver mate with just king bishop and pawn, and I remembered that the first move was Nf6+ but wayyy beyond my ability to figure the rest out, obviously. As I recall from Agad's video, the puzzle was presented to a bunch of top GMs at some tournament in the 80s. They would all try to solve it in between rounds with no success until good old Mikhail Tal decided to step away from the board and go for a walk during which that crazy brain of his figured it all out and he came back and showed everyone the solution. Crazy!
This could potentially be a new series that I would end up binge watching while compromising on sleep. Puzzles are always amazing! Looking forward for more!

puzzle 1 I never tried to solve it because I know I wont solve a mate in 25 puzzle 2 I saw the same puzzle but only the moment when Qg5 happened puzzle 3 I saw the hole puzzle in a CHESSTALK video so it knew all the moves puzzle 4 I solved it in less the a minute it was the easiest
As for puzzle 4, having seen quite a few of these trick puzzles I immediately assumed that you didn't mention the colour of the pawn because the solution involved blocking black's king by adding a black pawn
These are inarguably some of the best puzzles ever, featuring in many articles and books over the years. I'll shamelessly promote my own favorite, and hope more people get to see it: FEN string: n2Bqk2/5p1p/p4KP1/8/8/8/2Q5/8 w - - 0 1. Incredibly, this is forced mate in 14 moves. No engine that I have can solve this until you feed it the first two moves; Qc8 Kg8 (forced due to the threat of Be7+) and then.... Bc7! Have fun checking it out with your engine, folks :)
13:16 Stockfish 14 on the other website gives +2.4 with the correct move (black can escape after white promotes so there is no immediate mate if black resist the temptation of the fork). Maybe you need better stockfish?
In the last position in the second puzzle with the two pawns, say black plays Kxa7. In that case, c8=Q! *looks* like a classic stalemate trap. Unfortunately for Black, they have a knight, which moves anywhere, and then White mates next move. Beautiful.

In the 3d game what happens if when the bishop goes to d5 but then black reroutes the night by going f4 then bishop c4 and knight g1? Then that 1 knight would cover both checkmating squares.
Love these! I love chess puzzles (almost as much as I love playing chess itself). I'm rather proud that I got both the 2nd and last puzzle... last one was even kinda easy as there's only three options. Second one was more difficult, but once I realized we had to stop the queen from being able to check the king it had to be some maneuver to block it and the rook sac was the only possibility.
Loved the last puzzle! I really thought the trick was to place a BLACK pawn on g5 then mate on the h-file, but the forced en passant was a fabulous solution!
attempted all of these and failed all of them but was so close on two of them!!!! i put the pon on h2 in the last puzzle but only moved it to h3 and didnt even think the king could move to g5 still. totally forgot about en passant. Amazing video! please make more of these!

But I’d seen a few multiple times like the first one
puzzle number 1 had a mate in 2 and a mate in something other than the mate in 25.

At the 4 th puzzle it also works to place the pawn on f4 and play rook g1 black will push the g pawn and after that rook h1 is mate
The pawn moves to g3 freeing up the g4 square for the king though

I paused and thought for 30 minutes... i found Pawn to H2 and then H3 which also solves the puzzle.... i forgot en passant was a thing (puzzle 4)
I got Re1 for puzzle two but that’s it. Literally just screamed Re1 at the screen then was like “ok, I did it, tell me the rest of the moves”

1 was pretty easy but boy I had the wrooong idea on the second, really shows the importance of combining color complex with deflection
