I could hardly tell the difference but to me the 219 has a slight edge. I have the HM-207 on mine, which is basically for the 5100 so the buttons are labeled differently. There’s a $40 difference between the 207 & 151, but haven’t figured out why. I’ll have to try the 207 vs the 198 & see. I got the 207 for the remote functionality but I’m not using it as much as I thought, probably because the buttons aren’t labeled correctly.
So I just came across your RUclips channel tonight and like it very much OM. On the mikes, It wasn’t a huge difference but I do believe the HM219 sounded richer and just more resonant. 73’s Larry W7YDA.
Thanks for this - you always do a great job To me it was sixes but the 198 sounded better on HF the 219 better on FM Your videos helped me get my 7100 mounted in my Tundra this summer!
Nicely done Chris. IMHO, very close, but I would give the edge to the HM-219. That being said, I don't know if the swap out is worth the difference in cost. 73, George K2WO. Be well, be safe.
Could be. But when I initially installed it and checked how the ALC and Compression was responding, it the 219 seemed to have a little more audio to it. But you’re right, on-air the 198 might be a bit better on SSB
Disassembled stock HM-198 microphone and found tiny mic hole is also NOT aligned with mic element rather its at the bottom of rubber mic element support nearly completely blocked. The tiny (obstructed) hole in mine was at the top of the second louver. I drilled a hole at the bottom of the first louver which is dead center aligned with mic element. I suppose you can imagine the performance increase! Be sure to completely disassemble the microphone before drilling a hole or you will damage the microphone element (obvious) if you do this "Necessary Modification"
I agree with your findings. Curious about the hm219 because I might purchase an IC-7300. I also have an ftdx3000 that I have no intention of getting rid of!
I think the 219 was a whisker better. Very close in any case. I think either mic on some of those older HF rigs would be a goer. Better than the HM 36 thats for sure..
I use the stock mic on my IC-7100, which I use as a base rig. But I also have used an AKG P220, which requires an external preamp capable of supplying 48V phantom power. The network control op for the Sunday night Warminster 10m SSB net says that the P220 sounds like BBC broadcast quality. The IC-7100 has outstanding audio as far as I'm concerned. I have a homebrew speaker which I made using a Dayton Audio RD100-4 full range driver which lets me hear all that the 7100 can put out. It really sounds good on FM broadcast such as WRTI. Not audiophile, but way good for a communications radio.
Timothy Stockman As you can see in the background, I have an RE20 on my FTDX3000. Always good to start with a good mic! The 7100 is a great radio. It works great in the truck, although I really need the NB on to filter out the ignition noise. Doesn’t help on repeaters that are a bit of a distance from me.
MAWazaLLC What started all of this was someone in my radio club had said my audio on the repeater wasn’t so good. There are some complaints online about the stock 198. I went with the 219.
@@k2cjbradio There is a mod for the HM-151 (and the 198) you can have done. www.7000mic.com/hm-151-info I was thinking about sending it out, but for another $64 on a $100+ handheld mic doesn't seem worth it.
I am trying to find your antenna set up for the 7100 in the truck. I tried today to install my 7100 and it isn't working well at all. I have a tarheel II but I think it could be how the grounds or bad coax... maybe put the wrong stuff in ... just picked up a long enough cable to reach the back of the vehicle and the 259 all didn't look like it had foil insulation shield.. so still got to hit the road tomorrow so shining it on. two meters got a respond sounding good. ... bummed a bit. I want to try have HF in the rig.
@@k2cjbradio Got it thanks. I found part of the issue, I insulated the bottom bold away from the ground too and this was the mail issue. Improveents are planned, grounds, controller .. driving with a mounted radio, not just it sitting there.
Thanks for the interesting test. To my ear, they are really close to each other.

Agreed that there is very little difference. But, it was a fun exercise/test to do. Thanks for watching!

Thanks!! yeah, not much of a difference. But, that's the fun of radio!
They sound almost identical. I'll keep my stock mic on my 7100. Thanks for the test though! '73

I thought the 198 on SSB was clearer due to the higher audio freq sound - N6KV

Pretty close right?
To my ears, too close to call. I would be happy with either.
Interesting test.

Thanks Chris, I have been debating on whether or not to replace my 198 or leave it alone. 73 K3DBI

It was not enough to make a big difference. I would buy either one. Oh, wait! I did purchase the HM-219. How about that. Thanks for sharing.

Same question from the other video. Did you try it with the audio compression out? If so, was there an appreciable difference to the ears?

Hmm. No shield in coax is a definite problem. If not that, make sure you bond the antenna to the truck with braid. I would start there.
