    Berry is with your index finger. Cherry is with your pinky finger. When you did black berry, you accidentally did black cherry. Also, when you spoke about the stem with pinky, you stated your non-dominant hand makes the cherry. It’s the dominant one that makes it, but you did it right. Think of the dominant hand that does most of the signing movement (talking).

    I have another question: I saw the sign for berry was the index finger and the pinky for cherry. But then the BlackBerry sign showed black and what was shown as cherry. Is it BlackBerry or black cherry? 🤷‍♀️

    • @spooqib6992
      @spooqib6992 2 года назад +5

      I'm still learning asl for myself & I'm not fluent so this is probably wrong, but I assume either fingers can be used and still mean blackberry, just based on context clues. Blackberry is a more common & specific word than black cherry and by putting the signs "black" and "berry" (or cherry) together in that order it makes one single cohesive sign. If you were saying black cherry you would probably sign "cherry" and then "black" afterwards since it's more like a adjective in that case. Basically black+cherry = blackberry. Cherry+black = cherry that is black, aka black cherry. could be wrong but that's how I would assume it works 😅

    might I suggest you leave the word you are describing on for the full portion of that explanation so deaf or hard of hearing learners can glance at the word all the way through as a reminder of the sign being taught. It would help solidify the connection between the word and the sign given for those who can't hear you speak.

    I have a question: I notice melon and pumpkin have the same sign. I guess for both melons and squashes you do tap them. But even with the orange sign, how do you know if it's referring to cantaloupe or pumpkin? I'm learning Spanish and notice a similar situation with all melons being "melon" and all squashes/pumpkins being called "calabaza". Should I spell the type of melon or squash out?

    • @LearnHowtoSign

    I absolutely love you channel!! I've learned so much from you and your day to understand descriptions with each sign, and that you don't repeat each one often, you just move on. I signed up for Fall semester at my local College to go even further with ASL. I do have one question.... for 'grapefruit' could you sign 'grape' and 'fruit' instead of fingerspelling it, or would that not be acceptable in the Deaf community?

    • @kathrynbravo5402
      @kathrynbravo5402 2 года назад

      There's no answer here to your question, but I was wondering the same thing for "raspberry." Maybe sign "r-a-s" and the sign for "berry," or make the sign for "red" and "berry." And the same for "blueberry," which could be the signs for "blue" and "berry." I'm pretty sure that fluent signers do have their own shortcuts, even if they are not taught to students in school or online.

    • @kathrynbravo5402
      @kathrynbravo5402 2 года назад +1

      As a hearing person, I have to disagree with you. I have tried it both ways, and it is extremely frustrating for me to watch silent instruction. Sometimes captions can help, but the voice is most helpful for me. A beginner benefits from listening to the voice, and/or reading captions, and then maybe later can advance to silent instruction.

    • @aris9940
      @aris9940 Год назад

      @@kathrynbravo5402 Understandable that it's easier for you. However, this is about advocacy for deaf people and teaching ASL correctly, not making it easier for hearing people. Deaf people 1. generally know sign better and more intimately. 2. Deserve to be the people who teach their own language rather than these opportunities being given to hearing people, who already take most opportunities from deaf people. I recommend LifePrint or ASL That.
