    I just chucked my jungle of twining and running feral philodendrons outside, ruminating on which ones I like enough to faff around with in making poles ( that would be most of them). And so I discovered you can just buy them from Grow Vertical, and fill them with media that I already have for my orchids! What a great film with such knowledgeable guys, thank you!

    Wow! That was mind blowing 🤯 So much knowledge and interesting info. So many fabulous plants I'd never heard of and never knew I needed.
    Maybe it's because I was so absorbed, but I didn't notice anything out of sync. Brilliant seamless editing 👍
    I am also in awe when I think about the amount of recording, filing, cross referencing etc that must go into Tim's propagation work, and also your time lapse shorts and follow up videos. Really appreciate all your hard work 😘 How does Tim fertilise his plants? I can't imagine him doing the bottle flip on that lot 😀 Special thanks to Tim for sharing his wonderful work, and to Timmy for his excellent camera work. 💕

    • @sydneyplantguy
      @sydneyplantguy  6 месяцев назад +3

      I'm actually not sure HOW he fertilises them but I'm pretty sure he uses GT Foliage Focus so probably a big pressure sprayer :) I'll ask him in part 2. I never realised how much effort goes into video creation & editing until I did it myself ... now I can't watch any video/movie/tv show without thinking about all the logistics in the background :D

    A tip you may want to use and give Tim is that some plants from the rainforest like hoyas and orchids are signaled to grow and reproduce by tannins in the rain water produced by the bark they grow on in the forest. I've used black tea made with aquarium water to make my hoya bloom. The tannins in the tea replicate what the tree bark does to rain water. Tim may want to try making tea with his fertilizer or soaking a piece of aquarium mopani wood and using that water with his fertilizer. Great video Jan! Awesome greenhouse Tim!

    Jan, thank you for persevering to do the painstaking work of syncing the audio and video portions of this video.
    I think that if you are going to hybridize the most important thing is that the two parent plants have the same number of chromosomes and ideally are in the same genera (genus). A lot of times using a chemical agent to double the number of chromosomes in one parent can make a hybrid between species who in nature would never be able to hybridize a possibility. One thing to keep in mind is that a viable hybrid does not mean it will be fertile.
    There are natural hybrids between plant species such as the Hong Kong orchid tree that combine the parent's best characteristics but is self-sterile. It can only be propagated by grafting.
    You can try to cross two species from different genera of plants but the odds of any viable offspring is less and is more challenging to do. Gordlinia, a stunning tree with rose gold autumn foliage, is a bigeneric cross between Gordonia and Franklinia genera. This hybrid was created because Franklinia is now extinct in the wild in the USA.
    With plants you can even try to create hybrids from two different families. That is much harder, requires the ability to do things like embryo rescue and the risk of failure is a lot higher. The chances any surviving offspring will be fertile is pretty low.
    Jan, you can buy some tulle drawstring bags or snag some at a fancy wedding or party and use them to enclose a swollen ovary of a plant you have bred. Party favors like candy or nuts are put in tulle bags because the tulle is a sheer, very fine net fabric. That way you can observe how the fruiting is coming along and catch any ripe seeds that may fall.
