this is basically the first generation of this tech, apple didnt even use the lidar for cinematic mode. im pretty sure in a couple of years this could be really really good
If they're able to update this with 24 and 60 fps, along with manual white balance, and improve the focus masking just a little bit ... could be a gamechanger. A real camera is still going to be way better (sensor size and natural bokeh), but in 5 years with cross-adoption of this technology and stacked sensors, I think the line is going to be very blurred (no pun intended).
The bokeh is allready better archievable then on micro 4/3rds cameras like GH5 and blackmagic pocket cine (without special lenses or speedboosters). But... picture quality and grading flexibility isn't close... I was particularly frustrated that the cinematic mode footage was only 1080p. I could not see it on the Iphone, but bang opening up on a 4k monitor it was not sharp. Iphone 13 IQ reminds me of old canon DSLRs like canon 70D.
Skin tone however straight out of the iphone camera is very OK, compared to the horrible panasonic GH5. But the GH5 records more information (then standard iphone 13) and can be adapted in post (resolve) to arri alexa colorspace. Having prores on the iphone 13 pro max, that is another world... I didn't choose that model because I couldn't believe a smartphone has a good cinematic mode, allmost usable... almost.
@@pieterpauwelbeelaerts5995 Interesting point about color grading. What is that dependent on? Bit depth? I also like how you compare it to a 70D... That wasn't that long ago. And if we're near 70D levels today, think of where this "phone" technology will be 10 years from now. I also think far fewer people will be manually color grading by then. There will some kind of automated matching and LUT process that nails a look 99% of the time, especially when the camera maker is really a software maker (Apple, who makes Final Cut Pro, for example). Depth of field will also become a post-production choice, making multiple lenses less necessary. "Real artists" and "true pros" will grade and focus themselves, but that's a process that I see getting a lot simpler with the unification of phones, software giants, and camera technology.
Man, if only Apple would finally get rid of the ghosting/lens flare. They said ages ago that they are aware of the problem and they'd be working on it, but still nothing. Otherwise it's gonna be great.

Thanks for this - the cinematic footage is wonderful and the in-depth look at cinematic mode is valuable. Thanks for the warning about cinematic mode and the telephoto lens - I was planning to use it for an ensemble singing performance this coming weekend, and of course now I won't! I was on support chat with Apple to ask about some flaws in the 77mm equiv. telephoto lens for STILL photos - namely that when things get even a little bit dark, indoors or outside, the phone will NOT use the tele but will switch to the wide lens and crop an image (because that lens is faster for dark scenes). The problem is that the quality is awful - muddy, plasticky, gooey. The support person went away and researched the issue and told me that the engineers are working on a fix for these issues. When I expressed mild skepticism she said, no, they really are working on it. So - reviewing the tele: sunlight scenes AA++, dark scenes F-, regular video indoors (not cinematic mode) on a non-moving subject (singer) A+. Looking forward to see if Apple will actually fix the tele, and how well.

Insanely good video, but my suggestion is that if you wanna use the cinematic mode, do not use more of the bokeh aperture, at least 2.0 is okay or 1.8. And doing it on 3x camera will be more better because the 3x camera has a wider lens and natural bokeh which will make it almost close to the dslr

It's so amazing that it measures depth of object and background at such a fast refresh rate and keep masking then subject. . If you wanna know more about how it blur the background, you can learn more about depth sensors
Yup! I'm sure that's in the works as we speak. My guess is, the Camera app is generating masks in real-time based on low-resolution depth maps that are generated at every nth frame. Then it's probably averaging those masks in 2D temporally to come up with the final mask that controls the amount of defocus while adding the depth of field effect. But, it looks like the resulting mask is too low res and maybe not updating often enough from frame to frame to act as an accurate defocus mask currently. Also, the finally defocus effect seems to low-res and chunky at the moment to deal with hair and certain kinds of movement properly. Just the same, all that has to be incredibly computationally intensive. I think Apple just settled for applying the blurred edge effects at a low resolution for now even though they're not quite accurate enough for a completely convincing effect. I think things will get there in time though.

I shot my cinematic mode and regular video mode back and forth and cinematic mode was not as impressive as I thought Until I saw you video. I just did not know how to use it. Now I can look forward to using it. Thanks for making this video.
Great cinematic footage! The 30fps limit is a bit of a letdown as it does not permit slowmo. But if you edit it using a video editor in a pc, you can get a 70% speed with slight slowmo without the video being too jerky? What are your views or advice on this to a video newbie? Thanks.
Hey great video man! What is that light rod called that you have in the background? Also, what is the light rod that the subject holds throughout the cinematic footage? Thanks!
the cinematic footage has been color graded! some of the example footage while i’m talking is labeled in the bottom right corner as unedited footage, which i haven’t done anything to!
Hi I see a “small light point” during filming…at, 4:15/4:18. This is normal?? I noticed because on the IPhone X when taking pictures with a lot of solar light, there was also such a point. I believe it is not normal! correct me if I'm wrong! otherwise, excellent quality!
Dude, that short film was absolutely sick! Is that your girlfriend? She’s a great model, and you too have incredible energy! I’m so stoked about this, because I just got the 500 GB version of the phone today, and I want to start doing videos of me playing guitar, because I play music full-time for a living, and I have been wanting to do some videos for the songs I’m working on for my next album. Also, I was going to say the music is really good in this, so I’m blown away that you’re actually also producing that music! Is that you playing everything, or are you having someone else do it? The last track or a two hour long album of mine is 27 minutes long, and very mellow and New Age sounding. Let me know if you want me to send you the link to listen to it.

It's obviously color graded. But output is still preety great
the cinematic footage has been color graded! some of the example footage while i’m talking is labeled in the bottom right corner as unedited footage, which i haven’t done anything to!
yes i do 😝
@@BryanAdamCastillo lol thank you for answering. ♥️
Does cinematic mode add the black lines top and bottom like you get at the movies or is that done post? Great video
Sort your audio levels out fella, that intro woke my kid up. Great video mind
The video was amazing, thanks for the info...it,s something to think about.
Awesome man. What stabiliser is that?
DJI Ronin-S
@@BryanAdamCastillo worked it out in the end. But cheers!
Is it worth upgrading from the iPhone 12 Pro Max to this iPhone? I dont feel its enough but would like opinions.
Other than the light reflections and blurry edges, the end results were very impressive
Hi
I see a “small light point” during filming…at, 4:15/4:18. This is normal??
I noticed because on the IPhone X when taking pictures with a lot of solar light, there was also such a point. I believe it is not normal! correct me if I'm wrong! otherwise, excellent quality!
yeah it’s just a lens flare from the sunlight! not much you can do about that!
yeah that is pretty sick man
I have an iPhone 13 Pro Max and would like to start using it for my Real Estate videos. Can you give me some advise?
