  • Hey Everyone! Heard this early Cactus track the other day and was unfamiliar with it at the time. What struck me was just how great an opening riff it had, and as I consider myself somewhat of an afficionado of such things, I knew that I was likely not alone in being unfamiliar with this classic track and it's fantastic guitar work. Figured that I would give Jim McCarty and Cactus some love and make a video featuring it's killer opening guitar riff.
    Hope you enjoy.

Such a killer tune. The remake with Nugent is killer too. Thank you Kelly for bringing this song back into my brain! I'm going to go play my guitar now.

Thanks for the tip. Just went to listen to some of their music. Im left with, "how the hell did I live this long and never heard of this band?" I put the blame squarely on my city's rock stations in the 70's. Who they hell did they think they were holding out this band from us?!?!

Hey KDA, great lesson. If I may be so bold as to make a lesson request from a Southern Rock band who, for some unknown reason, didn't garner a lot of attention. It's a great guitar driven song that many have forgotten about. "Movin' On" by Missouri from their '77 debut.
I don't know if you take requests, but it's a great guitar song that takes me back to my bar band days.

"Drugs, death and rock and roll--the debauched story of Cactus" on the site "Louder" tells the detailed story of the band, wow, I still feel weird from reading it! Great vid, thanks!

Dean, any chance you could do a couple of "Trapeze" riffs. I think Mel galley is one of the most underrated Funk/Rock Guitarists in the history of Rock .. his Riffs on songs such as the magnificent "Loser" (One of the greatest Guitar riffs/Intros every written) "Feelin' so much better now" "Black Cloud" the sheer funk of "You are the Music" and the crushing riff on "Medusa" should be far more widely known than they are.

Cool song and riff thanks for sharing. There is a refresh of this song Cactus, Dug Pinnick, & Ted Nugent collaboration and it sounds really good. Jimmy McCarty was one of Teds inspiration in fact it was McCarty Ted first saw playing a Byrdland and that is why Ted chose to play a Byrdland too.
