  • The new Hyundai i20 was recently launched in SA and we attended that launch event where I was immediately impressed by the fitting of the 1L turbo motor in the car.
The new model certainly stands out with its ëdgy"design especially when compared to the previous generation and the optional contrasting black roof on the white car looks very striking in my opinion. The 2 tone paintwork adds R5000 to the price and I think this is money well spent in the looks department.
The turbo engine is only offered with top Fluid spec so 6 airbags, 8"infotainment screen with Android Auto and Apple Carplay, inductive charging pad, artificial leather trim, auto folding mirrors on locking and auto headlights all form part of the package.
With this high spec level, I am surprised that the rear seat can only fold in a single piece to extend cargo area instead of the split that is offered on most competitors. This limits the versatility that is common to allow extra load space with at least 1 rear seat passenger. Another upgrade I would like to see would be keyless entry and a start button instead of the old-fashioned ignition key.
The little 3 cylinder turbo motor is an absolute highlight. Delivering 90kW and 172Nm to the front wheels through a very slick and light 6 speed manual gearbox. Overall performance is excellent and the car can provide a fun driving experience if you want to push on a bit. Using the gearbox to keep the motor spinning in the power band with the turbo on song, the handling is nippy and precise, all adding to the fun factor.
Like all small turbo engines, fuel consumption will depend on how much fun you want to have. An open road cruise at sedate pace showed 5.3l/100km on the trip computer. Overall consumption for the test period with mixed driving conditions was 6.7l/100km.
The i20 Fluid currently retails for R330 900 with the DCT automatic version priced at R355 900. The Hyundai 7 year/ 200 000km warranty plus 4 year/ 60 000km service plan are included.

You mentioned the car has got LED headlights but they are halogens. Bit of a let down at that price. Enjoyed your review 👍

I like your reviews. You touch on all the features which one would look at when considering a car... Nice uniform sequence... Just that the camera work is a bit offish... Gets me frustrated a lot lol. But nice review
