Like any 'outsider' he was at first treated poorly, but he's well loved now around the country.
Great attitude and genuinely good guy, and hes adopted Australia and has now become a citizen.
Not the best player going around but hes played some very good footy in 2022.

As an American who's lived in Australia, there's a couple of things that need to be explained here. First is ANZAC Day. ANZAC (Australia New Zealand Armed Corps) day is like our Memorial Day, Armed Forces Day, and Veterans Day, all rolled into one, so you know how important that is to celebrate the sacrifices the military has given.. To the fact that they take the day off for the ANZAC Day match, which has always been Collingwood versus Essendon, since 1995. It's arguably the 2nd highest attended game of the entire year, second only to the Grand Final.
It's a big deal and celebrated when you play your first major game of AFL Footy. It's an even bigger deal when you kick your first goal in footy. You're in rare company when your first kick of the ball is for a goal. Mason Cox, in his first game of AFL footy, in his first possession of the ball, kicks his first goal, ON ANZAC DAY. That's the equivalent of say, Michael Jordan hitting a 3-pointer for his first possession of the ball in his career, or O'Dell Beckham making his famous catch for a touchdown in his first game, on Veteran's Day. It's that big. That's why the commentators said "Could you believe that an American, in his first game, kicks the first goal, on ANZAC Day? That didn't just happen!!"
And then, that preliminary final. It's the equivalent of the AFC or NFC conference championship in the NFL. Winner goes to the Super Bowl while the loser plans for next season. Richmond were favorites to win that game, especially as they had a record of 28 straight wins at the MCG.. You saw what happened, and what impact Mason had. It even made the news up here, and got a lot of people into the AFL, especially since off the back of his work in that game, Collingwood got to the Grand Final.

Aussies who play it professionally have usually been kicking a footy since they were toddlers. For anyone to first kick a footy in their 20s and then make it to the senior professional level in 5 years is astonishing. It's a credit to his talent and his tenacity that he stood up to his early failures and the hard flak from fans and the press and made it to be a very decent AFL player. Aussies appreciate that kind of grit, and he has earned a ton of respect for it.

Mason's contract has just been renewed for an 8th year. Collingwood have won 11 games In a row this year and are now 2nd on the ladder.
Yes he did cop a lot of shit at the beginning, but in a few short years his game improved and his perseverance won him the respect of pretty much the whole country.
Even know Collingwood is the most hated and crutinized team in the league, Mason is one of the players, that pretty much everyone can't help but like. He is a great bloke that does heaps of charity with the Salvation Army, youth and indigenous organisations.
And He recently became an Aussie citizen.
Here is a great clip from his podcast about his life in life in Australia and becoming an Aussie citizen.

I love your sincere reactions bro to our game. I was away camping that night of the preliminary final and we could only get the game on radio, the commentators were going nuts with the game he played that night, it was the 2nd most contested marks taken in a final since the game began well over 100 years ago, he lit the place up, the crowd was chanting USA USA, I was so happy for him, he’s been on and off prior to this year for a couple of seasons due to needing corrective eye surgery, but he’s had a really good year this year, he now plays with these swimming type prescription goggles on which everyone laughed at at first, now you have a whole lot of junior footballers running around pretending to be Mason, he is a great bloke and now we’re proud to call him an Aussie too, he’s now approaching his 100th game, a great achievement for someone that’d never heard of the game a week before he flew to Australia

What a fabulous story of tenacity and perseverance. This man sets an example for everyone with a dream: you can dream big, but you have to put the work in, and believe in yourself even when it seems like you're the only one! He could have left Oz and gone home bitter and discouraged, but he didn't. The genuine good will in this young man is obvious - he's just so nice! Love the Aussie accent too.❤

He plays for my team the Collingwood Magpies but they are just the Pies. Mason is called our American Pie and he signed to play before he ever saw a game of AFL. He was terrible but I loved that he never gave up. It took him 4 years before he was allowed to play 1st grade and he was still terrible. Many wanted him sent home but he got there.
When you have a field with more than 90,000 people there. Then they start Chanting USA, you know American Pie has the ball. His parents flew here to see that game in the finals. He is 7 feet tall.

Pyke and Wheeler had an Aussie parent and grew up here playing the game. Despite being born in the states they'd both likely strongly consider themselves Australian.
Holmes hadn't played when mason first arrived in Australia but Holmes played his first game in '15 and Cox in 16.

The context here is that AFL teams are eager to recruit very tall players to play in a position called a 'ruckman'. They contest ball ups at stopages, a bit like a jump ball in basketball. They also can play up forward where marks (catches) can set up a free kick at the goals. Height is obviously an advantage in these sort of marking contests. This is why they will even recruit players, who've never played before, from overseas to the lower leagues that feed into the AFL. Fan skepticism of this approach is not directed at Cox personally, it's just very unlikely that a raw recruit will develop the skills and match awareness to play at the elite level, compared to players who started as kids and grew up with the game. Cox has really achieved something to still be playing AFL.
