Just so happened the store you went to served cold fried chicken. The chilli sauce for Malaysian McD is hotter than Thai, which is sweet chilli sauce. All foreign vloggers missed the spicy crispy fried chicken burger ("Spicy Chicken McDeluxe" in Malaysia and "McSpicy" in Singapore) so I'm happy that you tried it! It uses spicy breaded chicken thigh whereas McChicken uses processed chicken patty mixed with flour. It's probably the one local McD menu item which is on par with Chick-fil-A's chicken sandwich. Some local roadside burger stalls now make fried chicken burgers too and they can be really good. (Due to colloquial usage we call chicken sandwiches "burgers".) The cakes at Malaysian McD are supplied by Secret Recipe which is our version of The Cheesecake Factory, and their food items are quite good too.
I'd suggest trying Malaysian fast food/fast casual franchise restaurants that you can find in malls:
- Marrybrown: the Malaysian fried chicken franchise, pretty good fried chicken and porridge and they have nasi kandar on the menu
- Secret Recipe: try local fruit variants like durian if they have them, and for hot food stick to Malaysian food
- The Chicken Rice Shop: standard Hainanese chicken rice with chicken in several styles; opt for roasted, steamed, or curry (not many order the curry but it's so thick and tasty)
- Madam Kwan's: upmarket Malaysian food
- PappaRich: kopitiam similar to Oriental Kopi
- Manhattan Fish Market: seafood mainly fish and chips
- I Love Yoo!: a snack kiosk selling porridge with youtiao and tau fu fa (soy bean curd with white or brown sugar syrup, the Malaysian version of douhua)

Mcdonald’s cake are from Secret Recipe, a local bakery. You can find their outlet almost everywhere in Malaysia. Also, Mcdonalds and KFC here change their menu often and the famous burgers will have a comeback every now and then like Samurai Burger, Kamheong, Prosperity, Double Zinger etc. Make sure to try that if you stumble across them! For fried chicken, I actually preffered Texas Chicken because they offer seasonal fried chicken menus more often than KFC, and quite creative the flavors too.

You have to try the KFC here too . The spicy chicken with chilli sauce is just perfect .Zinger burger is also worth to get ,the bun isn't as great and fresh as McD but also as good

It was a cardinal sin that they served you cold chicken because the fried chicken from McDonald's Malaysia is the best. There've been times I crossed the border just to satisfy my craving for it.
The flavor was good but it was a shame it was not fresh 🥲. I think it would’ve been amazing if it was hot and fresh!
