crazy how rich people can write off bad investments while working people paying for travel, tools, gas, vehicle wear and tear, clothes, etc for jobs can't write off their losses just to work a low paid job.
After the last big "tax cut" my dad could no longer write off his gas expenses for traveling all over the state for work, and his company wouldn't reimburse him (he was 3 years from retirement and didn't want to disrupt his career).

I bought a ton of Metazoo to both collect and potentially play. Surprisingly enough it was this channel that inspired me to do this. I will forever remember this as the single worst investment I have ever made. The hate in my heart for this game knows no bounds.

@7218234 I actively tried to find people in the community who were playing and there was nothing. All of the LGS's were acting like this game would ruin their business. I would call to ask about the game and everytime I spoke to them they would act like I was asking them to start hosting lemon parties in the middle of their store. It was horrible.

It's not selling at MSRP or anything. But the prices on nearly all sealed product has either remained flat or gone up since the notice of closure. Even over a month after words. It is strange. I keep waiting for cheap as hell box/case prices, and I have not found them yet.
Metazoo is actually selling extremely well right now, even though it's selling for way below msrp. Tons of people are trying to complete their collections and some are speculating, as if the company is coming back 😂

The first time I heard about metazoo was when it was discontinued.

so metazoo would be doing even worse now if they hadn't stopped the presses. Makes sense. Good thing they stopped printing and prices have begun to find a bottom and stabilize. Not financial advice, but the cards for your top teir metazoo deck might be cheaper now than they ever have been.
The art direction and graphic design was piss poor. They barely used a dynamic grid for the layout, the typography choice was amateur, and they tried to pass off crayola color pencils as high art... It just ended up being another big scam like the APE NFTs.

The "player base" consisted of almost only sellers selling to eachother and collectors. This game had a VERY VERY tiny player base actually interested in the game itself. That isn't a very sustainable market for a bran new card games longevity.
So true. I bought a few spell books after the crash just to see what it was like, and the gameplay is actually terrible. I can’t believe people were grading these cards. The stock quality and resolution are terrible. This was a sealed product collectible scam.
I bought a few packets and boxes from a local shop because they were heavily reduced and the cryptid theme interested me, so it's sad to see the wider reality and perception of the game.

So basically, no one was actually playing Meta Zoo. It was just another thing for people to put away and try and sell later for more money. You can't really have a card game hold much value if no one plays it.
In short.
A card game that no one plays or can get ahold of to play ends up as a dead card game. You just end up with a lot of worthless cardboard.
...and yet. in the beginning, that is basically 100% what was happening with pokemon.
Kids bought it, but few in the 90s were playing serious games. That took off cuz of IP leasing tho: gameboy games + plushes + tv show = held it up
@@djdrack4681 The fact you think no one in the '90s was playing it shows you weren't there. Kids were all over that game in the '90s, the same way they were the video games. There is a reason adults who were kids back then from all over the US talk about how their school had to ban Pokemon cards cause kids would bring them. Pokemon TCG became what it is today because it was allowed to grow naturally by the kids who wanted it. Not because Rudy's were hoarding it in their basements.
maybe it was just the schools in my area: but even tho we played with the cards, FEW kids were able to get a lot of packs, and thus nobody had the correct energy etc.
...so it was playing for 'fun' of it, not legal decks etc.
mix of supply limits, allowances' use (for other stuff, like video games, bikes etc), and (at least around here, lack of game stores).
Pokemon at time (we're talking Base, Fossil, Jungle, Team Rocket era) was a TCG...you HAD TO trade to get cards: there was no 'online' and no real LGS in the area...Collecting was 2ndary to playing.

Well, I say this: Good it's over with.
It was like a bad relationship, it started out fun but as time progressed you notice it does not work out anymore. They moved out but left their stuff behind, now we sit on it and can't do nothing with it.
Everyone was so fixtated on the supply and bought at high prices, thinking "this item has to go up" "if its rare, the price will rise like pokemon" but very few people failed to think about the actual demand of the product. Something thats rare, doesnt mean it will be valuable when theres no demand and most things are never going to be rare. They were printed to oblivion. Just a mess all around.
To this day, people are still paying $200-$1000 for sample cards on dead game, simply because of their "rarity". Its crazy.
This game was trash tier. I lol'ed hard when old rudy was hustling these to suckers.

by all accounts the game is absolute garbage and not worth playing. like genuinely it was not made to be fun to play at all, more so for people like rudy to buy shit tons and then sell in the future for profit. which fortunately has not happened.

It's funny to me, knowing that Rudy has things like a fat stack of Disgaea 4 copies just sitting in a random corner of his warehouse somewhere.
1M loss in inv rn but what was net? Must've made a decent amount on presales, kits, promos, etc. up until failure. Salty people in comments though - Sometimes you got to have a brain for yourself. Rudy has lots of good advice, but you shouldn't just blind buy anything he has or puts out there. I got a few nightfall prerelease from lgs because I like the halloween aesthetic and not much else. It was clearly going to be a pump and dump ccg when metazoo is trying to partner with 100 diff companies for 100 diff products so they could milk it all as much as possible before it busts, its too much too fast.

Why would this be a shame? I remember 20 years ago visiting game shops with my friend and he buying every Decipher Star Trek, Star Wars and LotR boosterbox shops still had in storage. Same with failed games from Upperdeck. Yes, MetaZoo is a complete scam and a failed card game but probably plenty of small player groups out there that maybe want to have product for drafts, for play. Collectors wanting product to fill out pages. Plenty of valid, good reasons for any one to sell old stock of a defunkt card game. If people want to buy it, let them.

How does the Tax loss work? Do you have to throw away the inventory of cards? Do you keep them in storage forever? do you try to sell them for less? What happens to those cards?

Or disposes of them if worthless.
Depreciating assets do not need to be surrendered. The reduced value can be leveraged against taxables and even the 25% tax on capital gains on other assets before you need to reinvest them within the calendar year.. You can actually legally claim further losses on the same product year after year if you don't liquidate and value continues to depreciate.
