In this video, I'll provide an update on my Avocado Saplings that I've grown from seed that are now just about 4 and 1/2 months old as I started them on 1/13/20. I have 7 plants growing in this series - 4 started from the toothpick and water method, and 3 started from the direct sowing into soil method. I'll share what issues we are having (both soil and pest problems) and keep you updated on their progress monthly until they perish or produce (fingers crossed). Tips for growing avocado trees: Avocado trees really don't prefer full sun all day and especially not 100 degree temperatures so It's been tough planning where he should stay during the days - preferably a partial sun/shady area. Avocado trees do enjoy slightly acidic soil that is well draining. A PH of 6.0 - 6.5 is ideal and having sandy soil conditions also helps. They also are heavy nitrogen feeders so a monthly feeding should be used after they reach a few feet tall. Your soil should consist of a mixture of Limestone, crushed granite and sandy loam. I think my husband is getting jealous! but he knows how much passionate I am about starting my own trees growing from seed. I chose these three because they grow nicely in my area and I'm from Saudi Arabia so I'm not worrying about winter or sub freezing temperature, I just need to take special care of them during summer or provide them some shade so the sun doesn't burn them. other than that I try to follow your steps and take some notes. please don't stop posting
After doing about 12 of these over the past few years (and watching your videos), I'm down to just 1, which is about 2 years old. I live in Nashville, TN, and have previously kept all of mine indoors year-round, with grow lights. Earlier this spring, I moved this surviving tree outside and I've noticed an incredible surge of growth. All of my prior attempts have had the issues you describe here, so maybe acclimating them outside with a touch of shade might help your trees, too. I love growing all kinds of fruit trees, including avacado. I suggest sprinkling the soil with cinnamon for mold or fungus issues, and diatomaceous earth for bugs. Both will clear up the problems without damage to the plant. Happy growing ♡
Please please this time around try to prune some trees so that they don’t grow tall like the last tree but produce more branches. Please. I’m also at your stage, I’ve pruned 3 of my trees, still small like yours. I love your series buddy, you are godsend.
How do I know if I have spring tails or mites on my avo seedlings? I can see them on all my avo plants now and they look like they are struggling since the mites started bad
@@hba626 ok thank you. I hope they are only spring tails. I have fungus gnats in my pots with potting mix from wood chips too. I think they are fungus gnats. Maybe it’s the baby fungus gnats too 🤷♀️ But I can tell there are mites and also little white bugs which I think are the fungus gnats. They look different. The mites look kind of translucent when you look under magnifying glass. The other ones are white and different looking.
Hello Rob! You are right! The best way to eliminate fungus gnats is drying the soil yet this has to happen over weeks as the new larvae emerge. This can severely compromise your plants growth and potentially kill them. Definitely control your watering as fungus gnats love that wet soil. 9 times out of ten the gnats are already in the soil you use or purchase at big box stores unless you sterilize the soil or purchased sterilized soil. Many times this can be cost prohibitive or time consuming. There is another solution which works excellent in my case studies. First I put about a quarter of an inch of sand on the bottom of my container and another quarter of an inch on top. This creates a barrier that the gnats cannot breach. Keeping adults from laying eggs. Then I use Gnatrol. It is 100% organic and eliminates them every time. You must do this to all the plants you have indoors or they will just move like ants. It only kills the larvae which leaves the adults. The sand prevents further contamination and you can use a yellow (they are super attracted to the color yellow) sticky tape. Ebay and Amazon have them. The adults fly right at them and stick. Gnatrol WDG (Water Dispersible Granule) is a highly effective, natural biological control for fungus gnats. It contains a variety of bacillus thuringiensis bacteria that kills gnat larvae, breaking the life cycle. The larvae absorb the Gnatrol, stop eating immediately and die, usually within 24 hours. Although Gnatrol does not kill adult fungus gnats, once the larvae is killed, the adults will quickly die off. Mix the granules with water and apply as a soil drench or add to the nutrient solution of your hydroponic growing system. Use ¼ teaspoon to 1 1/2 teaspoons per gallon of water, depending on severity of infestation. Repeat weekly for about three weeks so that you catch all the larvae as they hatch from the eggs. Gnatrol is OMRI listed and approved for organic production. It can be used up to the day of harvest on all edible plants. If you go the Gnatrol method, you can eliminate the sand if you use the sticky yellow tape. This is the only 100% effective way to kill them off and save your plants! Now, Gnatrol is not cheap and only available from the manufacturer in large drums. Luckily, however, there are sellers who buy the drums and portion the contents in smaller, way more affordable amounts. So you should be able to find pretty cheap. As far as fungus gnats go, I read that some play sand on top (~1/2”) will make them not want to tunnel down because of the sharp silica fragments. Seems to work on my plants 🤔 P. S. I’m very jealous that you get enough rain to fill up a barrel 😫
Hey Rob, I am seeking some advice. This past June I threw my avocdo pit in my backyard compost and it took! I live in the south and I am wanting to plant the tree for this winter. It is growing extremely well in the compost pile because of how organic the soil is. I was wondering if you have any tips on when to pot the tree, and when I do pot the tree, how to make sure that I am getting all of the roots. I have already purchased a big enough pot for him ( I am calling him Alfred), but I want to know the best way about potting him. I love your videos! Thanks, any advice is appreciated!
those are probably spring tails and spring tails are actually good for getting rid of mold because usually all they eat is mold, and they are good for the soil.

Hi Rob, I’ve got several avocado trees going, but no fruit has set. I’m guessing they are about six years. I’ve heard that you need a type A and Type B to get fruit. Is that correct? How do I know which type I have? Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks
Hey rob, I am growing a avocado tree myself! One question, from the pit two stems are growing out. should I cut off the smallest one or wait and see wich one becomes the strongest in a bit?
They are white soil mites. They are attracted to your soil mulch. You need a 4-step treatment to get rid of them. The main thing is whenever you make your mulch not to use rotting fruit in you mix. You can use coffee grinds and Ash from the fireplace, but not rotting fruit or vegetables. Treatment: #1 garlic base solution. using garlic based solution spray the soil and the base of the plants. Treatment: #2 cinnamon mixture. a cinnamon mixture will require you to use a teaspoon of cinnamon and at least four cups of water. Treatment #3 dish soap and starch Treatment #4 insecticide with Pyrethrins this will render the soil completely useless to the bugs and they will not return. This is a no-fail treatment that comes from University of Penn State. It pays the date the right girls LOL Btw they are not springtails. Which are not insects but Collembola from the animalia kingdom

they look sorta like springtails to me. springtails eat fungus and other organic matter. if you see them they can be beneficial and help prevent fungal infections. but, they may be something more serious. check and see if they jump when disturbed.
I know this is kind of unrelated, but I’m trying to grow cuttings from a very special spruce tree that we named “Grandpa’s Tree” after he passed away. It’s not working very well unfortunately, and I think I might have overwatered them. The once green buds on the ends have turned brown and I think they are gonna die. I’m not too concerned though considering I can always get more cuttings from the tree. But I am moving in about a month or 2, so I really want to get these cuttings to root. I got a new miraclegro mix specially designed for cuttings that I’m eager to try out, but I don’t wanna get my hopes up. Is there any advice u could give me to get these things to stay alive and actually root? Bc this tree is very special to my family and I and it would be amazing if we could get this tree to our new home in the form of cuttings. We can’t transplant it unfortunately, because it would kill the tree.
@Tiffany's Life no the mix is not rooting hormone. It is an actual soilless mix that I will plant them in that is specially designed to help cuttings to root, but I still will end up dipping it in rooting hormone anyway
I recommend growing them straight in a pot with soil because that always works better for me. I tried at least 8 with the water method and the bottom cracked open for the root but no root ever came out
Well here's something. I'm actually 12 and I love gardening. I've never actually grown a tree before. But somehow, our natural soil in our yard: ye, digged holes, can grow tomatoes, peppers and lettuce...that's strange

Hey Rob. Two things. Your avocado looks great, sorry to see you have what look like springtails... Definitely quarantine that Avocado, more than 2 meters away.. it needs extra social distancing 😂😂 On another note... Back on your peach tree update I mentioned about my four year old peach tree grown from seed.. I mentioned how it had broken its buds and how I would be super happy to see flowers, but I wasn't holding my breath... Well amazing news!!! It flowered.. sure, one cute pink flower, but it flowered.. at four years old! I'm so excited! So amazed!
Rob! Those little bugs are springtails they wont harm your Avocado they just eat decaying organic debris so things like little wood chips, dead leaves etc. so they are actually kinda helpful!!!!! Also one way you can check that is to try and touch them if they hop or jump or move really fast in any kind of way they are 100% springtails! Edit: just to clear things up because some people are saying its bullshit and that these are mites and that all mites are bad , first of all not all mites are bad that's just a plain lie ,second of all those are spingtails because they move fast, fast as in a lot faster than your typical mite, third of all if those were mites why would they be chillin on the ground and nowhere near the avocado, near as in not on the plant at all. They are springtales, good for soil increase the decomposition, they also eat the dead roots. I wouldn't mind them

On another note... Back on your peach tree update I mentioned about my four year old peach tree grown from seed.. I mentioned how it had broken its buds and how I would be super happy to see flowers, but I wasn't holding my breath...

I think that those insects are spring tails. They are harmless
Rob! Those little bugs are springtails they wont harm your Avocado they just eat decaying organic debris so things like little wood chips, dead leaves etc. so they are actually kinda helpful!!!!!
Also one way you can check that is to try and touch them if they hop or jump or move really fast in any kind of way they are 100% springtails!
Edit: just to clear things up because some people are saying its bullshit and that these are mites and that all mites are bad , first of all not all mites are bad that's just a plain lie ,second of all those are spingtails because they move fast, fast as in a lot faster than your typical mite, third of all if those were mites why would they be chillin on the ground and nowhere near the avocado, near as in not on the plant at all. Those are springtails, their good for trees, they eat mold.
Nematodes work well for fungus gnats!!! 👍
theyre springtails. pretty sure they eat bad roots and fungi
