@john wallace I think you're probably right, but Generation X is usually thrown in to mean everything wedged between 80's hair bands and Reality Bites. @@PandoraKyss I'm 83 too, I think that makes me a millennial by dates but all my influences were Gen x & I had older friends. @@SongofaBeach2012 Incarceration is a drop in the bucket. The fact is that the "memories" of gen X are obscured there is no digital media to magnify them and that they were already grizzled and old now, making them easily lumped in with boomers. They were the first batch of "liberated" teenagers and had a plenty wild time in the 80s. Media they relate to are also relatable to subsequent generations. The fresh-faced Michael J. Fox in Back to the Future still comes off as "modern" even though the actual actor is now in his mid-60s. The teenage experience in Grease is mostly relatable as well.

john wallace How exactly?. The nineties are the main time for NIN. Dedicated gen x. Decade. The very oldest millennial’s were ten in 1992. The vast majority of twenty somethings and teenagers were gen x. Kurt Cobain was called the voice of gen x not Millennial’s. The term gen x wasn’t even really widely used before the 90’s. The alt rock movement of the 90’s has always been considered a feature of gen x youth culture. Melancholy and the infinite sadness which came out about the same time as the downward spiral was called the wall for generation X by Billy Corgan.
