I'd say in my experience with STJs always went smoothly. ISTJs are surprisingly pretty easy going in some ways and have a great sense of humor once you get to know them despite them taking their lives pretty seriously. Even with the functions differences it hasn't caused much of a clash or anything. I think from an outsider looking in functions that I don't value as an ISTP conflict with me but once I directly talk to someone who actually uses the function I have respect for it because it is made clearer why they choose to think in that pattern vs how I choose to think. I actually learn alot from opposing function users.
True. I think a lot of it comes down to whether you're motivated to get to know the other person to appreciate their use of those opposing functions... like having a brother or a significant other or a best friend (my best friend in high school was an ESTJ), so that you already have some common ground and desire to spend time with them. I have a harder time connecting with casual acquaintences of those types who have different views from the start, and I can't seem to communicate my different perspective to them because of the functional differences.
