That’s- actually not a bad idea. If they can buy Whole Foods, they can certainly buy a theater chain. And seeing as Jeff Bezos is worth over $100 billion, he could pay off their debts AND buy them out too.

William Anderson not a bad idea maybe one of the other chains not as bad off and with the infrastructure in place ie drive-in theatres might want to get on it if they can.
Why doesn't AMC keep the Dine-In portion of their theaters open by doing what so many other restaurants have done and offer curbside take out? Sure, not all theaters offer Dine-In, but every little bit helps.
I am very very very sad. As a child the movie theatre experience has always been a special place in my heart. I don’t want to accept the possibility that movie theaters might disappear slowly after this is all over. I don’t want to accept the fact that “we” the audience might be buying/ renting new releases digitally. Sad times. Let’s hope this turns out for the best for everyone. Thanks campea for your thoughts
AMC is the biggest movie theatre company in the world. They pay their employees below minimum wage and gave their chief strategist a 500 billion dollar bonus (which could have went towards rent since they aren’t paying their landlords anymore)... When they were shutting the theatres down, we found out through articles on yahoo and was told we weren’t gonna get paid for them closing. We were told to file for partial unemployment because they would still need us whenever they reopened....But I’m glad you customers love A-lists...

The circle of life if AMC fails something will rise from the ashes. Someone will pick up a few locations on the cheap then expand and grow cause like you say the studios need cinema. I just hope the new empire learns from the previous mistakes.
I'm hoping all of these HUGE entities emerge from this different and better. For too long they have relied on the working population to feed the beast.
Worst case scenario is the AMC assets and infrastructure will be sold and used to satisfy the reestablishment of demand of the market. The company name is irrelevant to the consumer. An established demand is an irresistible opportunity.
I would like to believe studios will bail out the theaters due to a heavy reliance on them but the problem is the studios themselves are already taking massive financial hits and this may not stabilize for years before people as a collective feel safe enough to resume regular theatergoing, and not even factoring in how many people just won't enjoy it as much anymore after abstaining from it for months sheltered at home. It's more likely an entity like Apple will try to purchase them I think.
AMC’s equity owners are going to get wiped out, but it will open again with new ownership. That might not be a bad thing. Wanda Group is currently the largest shareholder... Who even wants a Chinese company owning such a large media asset anyway?
They are about to release where it’s only new movies to stream online for 50 bucks a month only one device can watch at a time with only one IP address can be used from your home.
Hopefully they survive because if they close movie budgets are gonna be smaller and the product won’t be as good as it was as theaters are what makes the studios the most money compared to streaming services
Yeah but they can still do the stupid early release they are doing now that is charging the rediculous price of 19.99. and studios will save money charging 19.99 without the overhead of physical media.
For a lot of people, AMC are the only theaters near them. If you had to drive two hours round trip to go to a movie, I bet you wouldn’t go as often. If people are inconvenienced by going to the movies, they won’t go as much, and box office numbers will dip significantly.
If they cut all capital spending, cut all employees and own most, if not all their locations, what operating costs do they have that are in a negative cash flow? Shouldn’t they be neutral?
One problem, the biggest most profitable movie studios are owned by bigger conglomerates. Universal is owned by Comcast which barely relies on films for revenue, Sony Studios & Columbia is owned by Sony Corp which mainly relies on its hardware and software not films. And Disney is having their own problems and I doubt they will be able to give much to bailout AMC. Viacom/Paramount I do think is the likely studio that can and will help out if needed. AMC will need new investors which I do think they will get of course with them losing some power over how thier company is ran.
Maybe they shouldn't have taken on so much debt. Or had enough in cash reverse to handle issues. The proverbial "couple months of expenses" suggested for the average person.

The issue is who has the money to actually bail AMC out. The studios are bleeding money right now so even if they wanted to they can't really afford to help out AMC. The only hope to keep the economic dept-pocalypses from happening is for a massive government bailout for the entire economy.

I don’t think AMC will close, but odds are against them. If it was only them needing help then they would be fine. However, everyone is hurting which is why I don’t think anyone will help them out with their debt. Lot of movies pushed back till next year. Not to mention they will be limiting seating for social distancing and dealing with a high demographic of people without a job. It’s a bad perfect storm for them. It just feels the longer this lockdown goes, the worse it will be.
They shunned independent movie theaters for a few big chains with megaplexes, instead of lots of movies earning a modest profit went for blockbusters and streaming at $20 won't cut it now the Hollywood we knew is dead. Theater chains are also dead.
Man me hearing this right now iz really upsetting me I hope that is not the case because I enjoy going to the movies every other weekend after a long week of work I'm praying they do not shut down
Lets go old school guys!!!!!!! Drive inn theaters... You can stay in your cars... And its a great way to create jobs and continue supporting Disney, Warner brothers, etc.. and any major companies..
Here’s a bright idea, maybe the movie companies should ask for a lower percentage of the ticket revenue so that this doesn’t happen. Or maybe the government, who forced this shut down in the first place. Subsidizes the company until the shut down is over because they’re currently violating the 5th amendment.
Hollywood execs are not only extremely selfish but they're also extremely short-sighted. I don't expect any studio to swoop in and help out AMC even if it would be in their best interest.
The issue really is, even if they didnt close now, will behavior be changed such that people dont wanna sit shoulder to shoulder in a confined space with hundreds of strange people for hours. Attendance will be down for some time if it ever even comes back to pre-virus levels. What does THAT do to the theater industry?
My theater was never packed shoulder to shoulder. When we implemented the 50% we still did not sell out. The issue before the virus was movie selection. We were warned beforehand that it was going to be a slow year due to awful movies lol. Our little Classic AMC was still bringing in 1000 plus people a day. We would've made it just fine without the virus
these Marvel films cannot make back their budget on a streaming service. You are right the studios need the theatres to prop up that business model, if it falls we see an end to the super hero, sequels, reboots and remakes.

For better or worse the entertainment(and many other) industry could be permanently changed and that is something that we'll all have to deal with.
Wilahelm2 ...you’re right I have a friend who thinks nothing of this and when I told him that your days of being cheap are gonna end and you’re are gonna end up paying he gets mad at me I tell film dude you do realize things are not gonna be the same anymore people are losing jobs and companies are shutting down sure we don’t have the virus but jobs are being taken away now that’s real, his respond silence
Stocks are at $2.05 right now, buy 50 bucks worth and if it does fold You only lost 50 bucks
Excellent topic.
I bet Netflix is very happy about this series of events....
wasnt there a program where you stream movies and you get the ability to pick where a portion of the fee goes?
They shunned independent movie theaters for a few big chains with megaplexes, instead of lots of movies earning a modest profit went for blockbusters and streaming at $20 won't cut it now the Hollywood we knew is dead. Theater chains are also dead.
No they have to open now .
It might be a silly question but If AMC launched a temporary Streaming Service, would it help their business?
AMC does have a streaming service.
GOD PLEASE NO! AMC A- List is the best thing to ever happen to movie theaters!
This is so sad I always spent my Tuesday and Thursday in theaters. Last movie I saw was Invisible Mam
PerfectSuperSaiyan mine too! Terribly sad if that’s the last thing I’ll see in an AMC.
Violating the 5th amendment?
Hollywood execs are not only extremely selfish but they're also extremely short-sighted. I don't expect any studio to swoop in and help out AMC even if it would be in their best interest.
Let's hope so ; but given how business leaders acted in both the late 1990s & again in the 2000s , it doesn't look good.
How is that even possible? Where would theatrical releases go to? I think they’ll recover fine.
