Hackers use programs that use brute force hacking which basically means the program will go through every combination of letter numbers and symbols in order to get the right password, adding more characters into your password makes it harder for the program to find the right password.

Yes, you are correct about the location, but my point was that the password itself is not stored. What's stored is a hash of the password (which is an encrypted version of it). A human would then have to decrypt it somehow to actually get your password. It is unfortunate that many browsers allow you to decrypt one of those hashed passwords right away if you are logged into your account.

the more characters you add to the requirements the amount of available passwords increases exponentially. lets say, for example, the website requires you have 11 characters in your password, with the number of available letters/numbers/symbols on your keyboard (assuming just english), you 'd have over 73 quintillion possible combinations for a potential password. that's a one, followed by *18 zeros* so good luck guessing that password 🙂

I have the opposite problem. All of my passwords are pretty long, have numbers, capitals and symbols, AND follow a complicated system that allows me to have unique, memorable passwords for every site while also making them very hard to guess. So when a site tells me I'm not allowed to have symbols in my password, it throws everything off and I end up forgetting it because I've had to swap the symbols out for something else. The most annoying thing is that I can't remember which sites allow symbols and which don't. If the sites had something on the login page telling me what their password rules were, that would make it easy for me to come up with another system for dealing with them. But no, they don't tell me shit, forcing me to go through the registration form just to figure out their password rules so I can login. I can understand why forcing password requirements on people can annoy them, but what's the point of just straight up denying passwords with symbols? It's not hard to deal with symbols on the server side of the website. Trust me, even I can work it out.

I know this is a bit late, but the reason why the password strength is "Weak" or "Strong" is mainly against hackers. Some programs usually attempt at every letter possible for your password. If you had more caps, letters, and different languages, it would take a huge amount of time for a program to look for all of that.

And also, remember, this site is testing for how fast it'd take a desktop PC to crack the password. Assuming your password can contain letters and numbers 0-9, the password "ajlfkajdfghadlkjfjnvafmva", which is seemingly random characters, has 62^25 (645,345,427,773,512,447,880,377,451,634,304,602,899,218,432) possible combinations, and a bruteforcing computer would have to try every single one. Unless it had access to a hash database that had part or all of the entire password, which would then cut down the time required for the bruteforce quite a bit.

Hackers use programs that use brute force hacking which basically means the program will go through every combination of letter numbers and symbols in order to get the right password, adding more characters into your password makes it harder for the program to find the right password.
Ok but even if they did result you to have 2 letters then all that would do it buy you two seconds bc they do that at an astronomical rate

That's wrong man, what is saved is usually a hash of the password (unless whoever made the program was sloppy).
Yes, you are correct about the location, but my point was that the password itself is not stored. What's stored is a hash of the password (which is an encrypted version of it).
A human would then have to decrypt it somehow to actually get your password.
It is unfortunate that many browsers allow you to decrypt one of those hashed passwords right away if you are logged into your account.

I used to forget my passwords, so I switched to 1 password everywhere... Then I got hacked. SO I had to rethink my strategy. What I finally decided on is a unique password for every website. But here's the catch: I don't have to remember any of them, because I have them saved in a document file, which is stored on an sd card that I keep unplugged unless needed. This means, I can just copy-paste the appropriate password (prevents keylogging), and since I only plug it in when I need it, there is less of a chance of someone rooting my pc and finding the password file!

I have the opposite problem. All of my passwords are pretty long, have numbers, capitals and symbols, AND follow a complicated system that allows me to have unique, memorable passwords for every site while also making them very hard to guess. So when a site tells me I'm not allowed to have symbols in my password, it throws everything off and I end up forgetting it because I've had to swap the symbols out for something else.
The most annoying thing is that I can't remember which sites allow symbols and which don't. If the sites had something on the login page telling me what their password rules were, that would make it easy for me to come up with another system for dealing with them. But no, they don't tell me shit, forcing me to go through the registration form just to figure out their password rules so I can login.
I can understand why forcing password requirements on people can annoy them, but what's the point of just straight up denying passwords with symbols? It's not hard to deal with symbols on the server side of the website. Trust me, even I can work it out.

usually most passwords are save since websites block too many guesses - but if they get hacked (like Yahoo, facebook, twitter, myspace, twitter (again) once had been) the hacker has all the time and tries a pc can offer (usually somwhere between 1- 2500 million ckecks per seconds for a really beefy pc).
thats why passwords are currently needed to be a one in a million-million-million-billion chance to be able to guess

I know this is a bit late, but the reason why the password strength is "Weak" or "Strong" is mainly against hackers. Some programs usually attempt at every letter possible for your password. If you had more caps, letters, and different languages, it would take a huge amount of time for a program to look for all of that.

iv had so many sites with rules on passwords screw my brain around to the point where i have 5 passwords now that are all incredibly similar with capital letters and numbers and when i type in the wrong password enough (1/5 chance) it makes me send emails to other email addresses that sends me on a never ending journey until the stars align for me and i get the right password, fuck sites that make you include capitals and numbers.

I think the site uses an algorithm based on the characters in the password, but it doesn't factor in the likeliness of the next characters based on previous ones: eg, If a password has the characters, "abcdef", then the next one is most likely to be "g". that's why that site might come off as a bit unreliable. And also, remember, this site is testing for how fast it'd take a desktop PC to crack the password. Assuming your password can contain letters and numbers 0-9, the password "ajlfkajdfghadlkjfjnvafmva", which is seemingly random characters, has 62^25 (645,345,427,773,512,447,880,377,451,634,304,602,899,218,432)
possible combinations, and a bruteforcing computer would have to try every single one. Unless it had access to a hash database that had part or all of the entire password, which would then cut down the time required for the bruteforce quite a bit.
Technically. Hackers would know that sites insist on capitals & numbers; and NOW would never expect all lowercase. So maybe now is the time to insist on all lowercase and no numbers.
