Hi, I'm from Portugal... this is quite a novelty... I know this story very bwell, the cars belong to a friend of mine that during over 30 years boughts these cars - some of them left abandoned on the streets - and gathered more than 400 vehicles stored in different places such as this barn.
Any idea why he did it? I don't understand why he went to the length of welding the doors shut so that even he couldn't go in and tinker with them over the years. What was the passion if he couldn't access them?
What most people do not realize is how expensive it is to restore a car well. Most cars cost at least 50k Euro or a multiple of that. So sadly most of these cars are not worth anything. Just parts cars.
That was a superb job at identifying these cars. A couple points: At 2:19 and at 12:27 one can just see the bonnet of a red Austin Healey Sprite MkI. At 5:27 the Mini is an Austin, maybe as early as 61. At 7:48, the"Sprite MkII" is a MG Midget MkI due to the side chrome. At 9:33 the Mercedes cowl grille indicates it's a "heckflosse" from 61 or later, while the side lights indicate a 180 or 190 model. I must say you have a sharp eye to see the Alfa Romeo Montreal and the Facel Vega FVS. Well done.
Thank you for your kind comments and useful hints to the cars you've mentioned. The car at 2:19 and 12:27 is indeed an Austin Healey Sprite Mk1. Cheers. The Mini at 5:27 is most definitely a 1967 Austin Cooper and not a Morris as I had described it - here's one here - www.collectioncar.com/detailed.php?ad=27072&category_id=1 same grille, bumpers and badge. You suggest the car at 7:48 is a MG Midget Mk1 because of the side chrome, but this one has a door handle on the outside which rules this out, no? The Merc at 9:33 has always attracted comment, and I know now it's not a 1956 model -the front bumper is unusual but the car is most likely to be a 190 C Heckflosse W 110 around 1964 - like this. www.flickr.com/photos/34107011@N08/3915118990/

Wow what I find. They are all rare cars indeed. It's a crying shame their left sitting in a barn like that. Cars like this need to be driven. loved, restored, seen by others who love cars for what they are. Part of our motoring history. I myself own a classic car, although it's not as old as some of these cars but every day less and less are being seen on the road. I know there will be lots of people say that's not a classic car but how old does a car have to be before it's classic? My car is 26 years old and still runs and looks like a new car it's been in my shed for 11 years now and has never been touched since it was new. Original motor, gearbox, and body. Even the same paint too and it doesn't have the headlining hanging down like most cars I see on the road. No parts hanging off it and no broken lights. It gets driven every Sunday for 1 hour to keep the car in top condition. Most people forget that a car is a machine and if its not used it will degrade faster letting it sit.My car is a classic Nissan Skyline. Or as my son says it's OLD SKOOL DAD. Don't sell it cause someone will just turn it into a drift car and wreck it.
This is a seriously expensive and well preserved barn find i hope people can save the cars before the building falls in on itself in another 30 years....

This is not car collecting or car enthusiasm, this is car *hoarding* . He must have have had an insane infatuation for cars and collected them for the sake of collecting. That he kept them locked away and hidden proves it. He didn't want anybody else to even have a look at his cars or even offer him a nice price to buy one or a few of them. When a car enthusiast can't find time or gets too old to take car of his cars or they just collect dust over the years it's a nice thing to sell them to other enthusiasts who'll keep them running in pristine order. That's passing the torch. I mean this guy is like an Egyptian pharao, getting buried together with his treasure so that it can be his in the afterlife too. You can't take your treasure with you buddy, when you're dead you're gone. Although I don't like jumping to conclusions regarding people my guess is this person was one of those lonely, old, rich folks who isolated himself like Greta Garbo and compensated his lack of social interaction with cars. I also doubt all these cars can just be dusted off and driven away, they will require some work.
I don,t think your giving the collector enough credit . Where else in the World does a history timeline of cars exist. If he was advertising & allowing the viewing of them . He would be constantly be harassed to sell them or break them down for sale as parts .Or be at risk of having them stolen . To restore them & keep them in mint working condition may not have been financially possible. Hoarding would be more like a wreckers yard of cars of same makes models & random years scattered & grouped with no real thought other than i might get it going or need a part one day .This seams like an attempt to save as many special makes & models and park them carefully for the future when they die. For car lovers to enjoy ,(starting with this video) the discovery of them & hopefully the restoration & creation of a musem
"The story behind the pictures: a property on the outskirts of Lisbon, Portugal, which belonged to a former dealer of vehicles was sold after his death, and what drew the attention of the buyer was a barn that had the doors sealed by welding. So that was open, showed a real treasure - dozens of cars, acquired by the former owner to compose your personal collection. Under the dust accumulated for years, rarities of European and U.S. automotive industries, such as Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, Alfa-Romeo, Lotus, among others. Some very damaged, but others in conservation status impeccable."
A journalist that knew about it convinced him to go there and take some pictures and the novelty begun there with the next person adding a little of romance to the story. True is that all models have been/are being sold, some after restauration, some in the condition of the film and all the romance about it played a good part on turning the sales easier...
What amazes me is Why would someone go through the trouble to collect these cars and leave them in a barn to decay? It's like a time capsule created by an insane person. the effort and cost is beyond comprehension.
The only good thing I can see about it is the petina but other than that I think your comment is right on. The petina on the paint and any good trim is the only thing you can really save.Everything else has to be replaced and/or rebuilt.
Absolutely the most fantastic volume of automotive history, just too lovely for words! A gorging great feast of beautiful, fabulous cars in great identifiable condition. Exciting, Thrilling!!!!!!!!! Would love to see more......
At 1:35-1:38; on the left is a Rover P6 and the car with a white roof is a Mini Minor. Looks like split side wondows, so it's possibly an 850cc version.
Clive Nodder All Mk 1 and 2 Mini's came with the split windows so it could be anything up to 1970 really. Given the 2 tone paint it might be a cooper or even an S :)
Did I hear that the only one that started, when it's key was turned, was a '62 VW Bug. Or did I see that in a Woody Allen movie? Never mind...forget it! 200 year old Volkswagen discovery scene from Woody Allen's, "Sleeper" (1973)
ok if you don't care about other people stop reading now this video reminded me of a super cool dream I had a few years ago where a fairly large number of cars was discovered in a building like this and this guy got me to fix up, wash, and detail all of them so he gave me one of the cars as payment. I was pretty stoked to have a '69 coronet super bee. then I woke up... lol. thanks for reminding me of one of the coolest dreams I've ever had and hope you guys have fun with these 180 cars.
I really hope these cars get sold and get back to there former glory and driven again i would love one of the 3 1967 coopers and the mini moke actually no i would love all 4 :P
There is some of mistakes in recognising a cars... At 3:54 it is not a 1939 BMW 327/28, it's a 501/502 from '50/'60. At 6:30 is Mini Cooper from '80, not 1968 Morris Cooper. At 9:13 is not VW 1302S, it is a '50 VW 1200. At 10:05 - Hillman Imp was produced 1963-1976, not '50. 14:25 is a Formula Vee car.
I have already corrected those errors using the RUclips 'Annotations' feature. Please note that Annotations ONLY appear on standard RUclips players and embedded players. Annotations do NOT appear on custom RUclips chromeless players, or on mobile, tablet and TV devices. The Mini at 6.30 is a '68 Cooper S, 1980 models had an indicator light fitted on the front wings just above the wheel arch this feature was added to the Mini around '72. Thanks for your input it's much appreciated.
***** Not the all Mini '80 models has side indicators, they were fitted only on some markets. I reckon is a '80s model (mk V), because of different front bumper and wheelarches extensions.
Puissance énigmatique toutes ces voitures en robe de poussière. Merci pour les noms et dates de chaque modèle !!!! Un petit film passionnant que je collectionne aussitôt comme un cadeau.
No, Guy! These are Portuguese license plates, for sure. We had the same displacement as the dutch, from the beginning up til the early 90's (2 letters -dash- 2 numbers -dash- 2 numbers). And we only used 23 letters (K, W and Y were only officially introduced to our alphabet after we joined the EEC)
You completely missed a GM at 13:11 at the top center. It's an early 70's Oldsmobile Cutlass or Buick Skylark. Why were all these cars sealed in and left to rot?
The owner of the cars was a car dealer in the 1970s and 1980s, and decided to save the more interesting cars that came through his doors. When the barn was full, he padlocked and soldered the doors shut. The photos were taken by Manuel Menezes Morais and has been sworn to secrecy about the location and the owners name.
The newest car in there may have been 15 years old at the time the door was welded shut. And welding the door shut obviously didn't keep the dust out. Birds could apparently get in too because I saw quite a few bird droppings on some of the cars. Probably some birds built a nest right above them in the rafters. If this is on a farm where the fields get plowed regularly it could easily accumulate that much dust in 15 years.
This photos wore taken in 2007 by a friend of the owner.. He shared the 68 photos on his blog but at the time he deleted them people had already backed up them.. The collection is still for sale.. He said he has so many because in late 70's those cars were cheap.. He was a car dealer.
Good to see the cars saved ,maybe before the roof collapsed and damages them, and gone to good homes, or museums, have had American and English car's amongst that display, great find ,good video,
All cars is beautiful curve, unique style, I will be so much fun. I like them so much. Today, new cars is very easily driving in all ground. performance, ability, power, all is progress. But, any car is the resemble design and not unique. not have fun as watching. now, i fun it will be seeing the reverse side of the new cars.
The ReactionGuy Bottom line. He is learning the language. chances are he speaks 2 or 3 languages. Sure his grammar was a bit daft, but nonetheless he's still speaking a foreign language. If you ever find yourself on a video from his country (wherever it is) you will find that you are at a loss. Where as he can come here and communicate with you. Badly granted but a hell of a lot better than the reverse. I say fair play to him for that.
What a treasure trove! Hope all these fine automobiles will get some major TLC and shine & move as they once did. I love so many of them, especially the 1954 yellow Buick and the '55 Chev Bel Air. :D Great to see this and the music was fitting for all the '10's that were there in that barn! ;)
A man named Manuel Menezes Morai took these photos, but was sworn to secrecy as to location and owner's name. What is known is the mysterious owner was a Portuguese car dealer in the 70's & 80's and stashed some rare & not so rare cars he came across. When the barn was full, he pad locked & soldered shut the doors.
Ex-stig - Great video - as for the racing cars, the one at the back looks to me a bit like a Terrapin club racer and the other reminds me of an early Elva.
Well must be in Portugal. The license plates are the old school ones they used. I was born there & remember seeing them. I remember some of those rides on the street in the 80's. Doubt someone brought them to "Dallas Texas"
The car at 1:27 with the …1950… on it is a Triumph Mayflower. They were made between 1949 and 1953. It's my favourite car. Please send it to me to be fixed and loved. I notice that many cars have tyres with plenty of tread left. And no dents anywhere. These cars were used but not flogged and then retired before they were worn out. With air in tyres, new battery and fresh fuel many of these cars would easily start. I would love to find a "barn" like this.
Wow. What a find! I wonder if the Lotus Europa (at 4:40) was the "Special" with the 5 speed tranny as seen in the anime "éX-Driver". B.t.w. I like the design of the old Giuliettas more than the new ones
This is a fabulous collection, but no barn find, more of a haphazard "I will put all the interesting cars I trade from my car sales business and put them in a barn because I can", and you cannot but admire the guy, "I want one of those in my barn so I can just enjoy what a designer can do with metal and walk past and think, that's a beautiful thing" the guy knew what he had, good taste in cars, and 40ish years to enjoy them. Kudos. He knew classics before they became classics. Can you imagine occasionally walking through this collection before it became public, stroking a fender and thinking... These are all mine!
I am not sure, if all these cars have been owned through a legal way, I think that family had slaughtered the owners of these cars in a different decades, like what usually happens in the Hollywood's horror movies. To prove my claim, you can see the wall stained with spots of blood in addition to that, most of these cars were parked in a strange way, as if its owners do not want to use again, and also most of cars's windows are remained wide open.
Good Day, Woo, that is, by far, *the* highest amount of unrestored "classics/antiques" I have ever seen! My impression of the Building etc I say the original owner sealed the place up in 1990, +/- 2 Years. If He is still alive, He could cash in on what would have been an amazing investment. I doubt a Cash investment could accrue value like this Stable of beauties undoubtedly has! It's high Time these Time Machines cease to be Bird & Mouse poop accumulators. Anther thing; it's bad to have them all clustered in ONE Building! I have heard *MANY* Times, News Stories of Fires breaking out in Auto Barns & loss of the entire collection. A Strom can drop the Roof down also.
The owner is now dead, and that's why the barn was opened (against his requests). But man, a lot of those don't even need restored! They'd all clean up so nicely
this appears to be fake,, I might be wrong,,but at 12:35 u can see a perfectly clean car in the frame when all the rest is covered with dust,,that's very strange
I would guess, that a Blanket or Tarp was placed over it, & it was removed so it could be viewed. My Grandfather did the same thing so the dust or Bird Poo would not damage the Finish.
So what happened to the cars?? Where in Portugal was this? Out of the dozen or so registrations I was able to see, sadly only one seems to have went on the road in Portugal(MG Magnette at 6.37) I guess the rest went abroad or have not been restored.
Sorry to interrupt! My elderly aunt has a large collection of Motor Sports magazine dating back to 1943. They were collected and lovingly kept in very good condition by her late husband who was an engineer and a car enthusiast. She doesn't want to keep them as she's looking to downsize her home. She's giving them away for free to anyone who's willing to pick them up at her home (she lives in north London), sending them via post is not practical as they are quite heavy and she's not able to manage it. It would make her day knowing the magazines go to someone who will appreciate it as much as her late husband. If anyone is interested, please send me a message. Cheers!
it is not a "Barn Find" The owner had been collecting these cars and storing them in this building. I remember getting photos of this in an e-mail in 1999 (yes, we did have e-mails way back then), the story was that a retired couple bought a farm in Portugal but didn't have time to look in the big barn until they had been there for a while and of course after cutting their way in (because all of the doors were welded up, they discovered that they had bought millions of dollars worth of cars. Of course this was bullshit and a quick websearch found the real story, that the owner was a collector of cars and was still storing them in this barn. They are not abandoned, just a bit dusty. Nice that you have labelled them, though
+Richard Hill There are two stories to this find...the one depicted in the video and the "other" one you mention, but the problem with that tale is it has always maintained only 180 cars were inside when in fact there were over 300! Someone who wasn't there made the photos available on the internet without actually knowing how many cars were inside? Also there is absolutely no proof the owner was ever a car dealer, this appears to be a "myth" which surfaced around 2007, this makes the "other" story highly dubious indeed. It would be fair to say we probably won't ever know the 'real' story behind this find though.
My mother had a 1961 Buick Special station wagon. And I had a 1971 Volkswagen...both long gone by now. They did not survive in this warehouse in Portugal.
portugal as some of the greatest colections of all original classic cars, some in barns and this is a real find that giullia SS is an example of what you can find in an old mans barn

Some very damaged, but others in conservation status impeccable."
nope thats a lie..a collector had them professionally photographed....
Vou partilhar e mencionar o seu nome, ok ?
A journalist that knew about it convinced him to go there and take some pictures and the novelty begun there with the next person adding a little of romance to the story. True is that all models have been/are being sold, some after restauration, some in the condition of the film and all the romance about it played a good part on turning the sales easier...
What amazes me is Why would someone go through the trouble to collect these cars and leave them in a barn to decay? It's like a time capsule created by an insane person. the effort and cost is beyond comprehension.
Some people are hoarders and maybe the guy was a car thief?
People are insane *_+
The only good thing I can see about it is the petina but other than that I think your comment is right on.
The petina on the paint and any good trim is the only thing you can really save.Everything else has to be replaced and/or rebuilt.
***** You are a self critic too.
Probably was a man's collection at one point and the guy happened to past
Absolutely the most fantastic volume of automotive history, just too lovely for words! A gorging great feast of beautiful, fabulous cars in great identifiable condition. Exciting, Thrilling!!!!!!!!! Would love to see more......
Someone should call Jay Leno.
..Phew..
At 1:35-1:38; on the left is a Rover P6 and the car with a white roof is a Mini Minor. Looks like split side wondows, so it's possibly an 850cc version.
Many thanks Clive.
Jay Leno must have been on the first flight to Lisbon when this find went public
On his Private Jet you mean half way there before the News segment was over on this :D
ok if you don't care about other people stop reading now
this video reminded me of a super cool dream I had a few years ago where a fairly large number of cars was discovered in a building like this and this guy got me to fix up, wash, and detail all of them so he gave me one of the cars as payment. I was pretty stoked to have a '69 coronet super bee. then I woke up... lol. thanks for reminding me of one of the coolest dreams I've ever had and hope you guys have fun with these 180 cars.
3:23 is not a DS 23 - it's a Citroen SM with Maserati engine.
at 9:14 the 1302s was basically a beetle fitted with a 1600 air cooled engine I worked on quite a few of those years ago
I really hope these cars get sold and get back to there former glory and driven again i would love one of the 3 1967 coopers and the mini moke actually no i would love all 4 :P
phil ryan their former glory
wow..i just cant believe my eyes. the cars...the music...its a goosebump.to me.
wow. I would straight up pass-out if I walked in on this. Holy Smokes.
An MG Magnette 1957 and a Mercedes 190 Saloon was shown. I owned both cars way back in time!
I've no word! It's incredible!
+Astor Mingus That's a contradiction-- Incredible will do.
that's actually five words
Impressive car barn !!!! I hope these vehicles will be restored and not scrapped...
13:08 green car with chrome rear bumper is a 1969-1972 Oldsmobile cutlass
And no flat tires on any car
2.00
15:06
12:02
Awesome .You guys are dedicated... good eyes on all of you.... you do know i was just being a smartass though... i hope. Peace
Mika Saarinen moi
Puissance énigmatique toutes ces voitures en robe de poussière. Merci pour les noms et dates de chaque modèle !!!!
Un petit film passionnant que je collectionne aussitôt comme un cadeau.
Well done.!! A great documentary. Many thanks for your time and effort.
Wow, great job identifying all that you did! Amazing collection.
How did you get in? And how many cars where there? Oh and you should put them on sale they go for tons!
This is an incredible find worth millions!
You completely missed a GM at 13:11 at the top center. It's an early 70's Oldsmobile Cutlass or Buick Skylark.
Why were all these cars sealed in and left to rot?
It's a 1970 Olds Cutlass. He identifies it at 3:20.
Ok. Then I guess I missed it. I didn't realize he went through there twice.
Take the cars out of the barn, wash them, put them back in the barn, put hoodies on all of them. How hard can it be ?
lol
how is he supposed to wash 320 cars all at once?
Mike. power wash
He won't wash them all at once, but one at a time. :P
15 years ? That looks like 3o, look at the dust btw , now you have to find keys %)
Keys where all inside...
dlwatib
this is a warehouse not a barn
J Menge Wow that's so awesome
This photos wore taken in 2007 by a friend of the owner.. He shared the 68 photos on his blog but at the time he deleted them people had already backed up them.. The collection is still for sale.. He said he has so many because in late 70's those cars were cheap.. He was a car dealer.
Hah the music made this so perfect.
Good to see the cars saved ,maybe before the roof collapsed and damages them, and gone to good homes, or museums, have had American and English car's amongst that display, great find ,good video,
at 3:21 that is a Citroen SM not DS, it has a two door body?
All cars is beautiful curve, unique style, I will be so much fun.
I like them so much.
Today, new cars is very easily driving in all ground.
performance, ability, power, all is progress.
But, any car is the resemble design and not unique. not have fun as watching.
now, i fun it will be seeing the reverse side of the new cars.
love that grammar
The ReactionGuy
"love that grammar"
I was not being a grammar nazi. Just simply pointing out his um, unique sentence structure
I know, and I meant it not to be mean spirited, but simply to point out the humor in his comment.
11:50 the car directly behind the simica 9 sport coupe is a Volkswagen vanagon
you got a starter motor for a 1966 vw beetle?
What a treasure trove! Hope all these fine automobiles will get some major TLC and shine & move as they once did. I love so many of them, especially the 1954 yellow Buick and the '55 Chev Bel Air. :D Great to see this and the music was fitting for all the '10's that were there in that barn! ;)
I love old cars in barns
A man named Manuel Menezes Morai took these photos, but was sworn to secrecy as to location and owner's name. What is known is the mysterious owner was a Portuguese car dealer in the 70's & 80's and stashed some rare & not so rare cars he came across. When the barn was full, he pad locked & soldered shut the doors.
Ex-stig - Great video - as for the racing cars, the one at the back looks to me a bit like a Terrapin club racer and the other reminds me of an early Elva.
Brilliant find so many classics that just want to be lovingly restored. Wish I had the money both to buy and restore.
That... is like in my dreams
*seen the video months ago*
Wow what a complete tease . Awesome collection
Well must be in Portugal. The license plates are the old school ones they used. I was born there & remember seeing them. I remember some of those rides on the street in the 80's. Doubt someone brought them to "Dallas Texas"
GRACIAS!!! Una gran colección,
The car at 1:27 with the …1950… on it is a Triumph Mayflower.
HI! I'm discovering your video almost 6 years after you posted it. Do you know what happened to all those cars?
Just some of them...ruclips.net/video/GiV60W-mtbc/видео.html
It's crazy to thind these cars in the barn ! Whose cars were it?
What is the exact location? Thanks!!!
Still waiting for your answer, I see!
this is one of the craziest barnfinds i've ever seen...so many beauties and most of them are in a good condition...woooow thanks for your great video!
Fantastic video Exstig, thank you.
That '60 BMW 502 at 8:33 I think is really a 1949-52 Chevrolet 'Fleetline' 2 dr Fastback sedan?
The first F1 car seems to have a VW Fan Shroud visible under the engine bonnet. Formula VW or something but not F1
...thanks for the helpful info.
NOSLEEPATALL a
Did they sale them off? Wish i could get that 66' Lincoln rag top..
That's worth a fortune, although it doesn't look much on these pictures. The lucky buyer of that barn turned into a millionaire, if he sold them all.
Seegal Galguntijak
Wow. What a find! I wonder if the Lotus Europa (at 4:40) was the "Special" with the 5 speed tranny as seen in the anime "éX-Driver". B.t.w. I like the design of the old Giuliettas more than the new ones
I have cried .. It is Beautifull this cemetery of car treasures
9:27 look at that car from 1939 and how good it looks original tires idk
@ 1:30 the maroon car in the center is an alfa romeo berlina looks like it could be a 1970-1974.
OH MY GOODNESS,WHERE DID ALL THESE BEAUTYS GO TO ??
Wow vintage car collections
I enjoyed very much . great collection...proud to see that .
no it was a private dealer
i died and this barn go to sale
wen the buyer open the doors this was inside
ps: i am portuguese
Nice Collection. Have the Vultures gathered to feed of this yet ?
I saw this when first uploaded---so what happened to them ? At least they were sheltered indoors in a warm climate, away from rain--the destroyer.
Philip Croft Some of them here - ruclips.net/video/GiV60W-mtbc/видео.html
wtf? this video had blown my mind....
Interesting video however l wonder what became of all the rust in peace cars did have big auction and sell them off or are they still there ????
I am not sure, if all these cars have been owned through a legal way, I think that family had slaughtered the owners of these cars in a different decades, like what usually happens in the Hollywood's horror movies. To prove my claim, you can see the wall stained with spots of blood in addition to that, most of these cars were parked in a strange way, as if its owners do not want to use again, and also most of cars's windows are remained wide open.
Is that an Alfa Romeo Montreal at 11:02?
Good Day,
Woo, that is, by far, *the* highest amount of unrestored "classics/antiques" I have ever seen!
My Friend you surely know your cars, thanks for all the hardwork.Think the Chev at 13.01 is closer to an 1952 model. Thanks really enjoyed watching.
Thank you for your kind comments George, it is definitely a 1949 Fleetline. What makes you think it's closer to '52?
citroen sm maserati not ds 23 ie
In a morrocan radio station they said that the cars where estimated around 36 million dollars
i have car nissan sunny leprix turbo 73 gt my father die but his car in my garage i save
So what happened to the cars?? Where in Portugal was this? Out of the dozen or so registrations I was able to see, sadly only one seems to have went on the road in Portugal(MG Magnette at 6.37) I guess the rest went abroad or have not been restored.
in Sintra area I believe, near Lisbon... the owner has been trying to sell them one at a time for years
Boys toy heaven, I could spend the rest of my life there.
Cheers!
peugeot 404 not found
I Have one 404 Pick up
it is not a "Barn Find" The owner had been collecting these cars and storing them in this building.
+TheExStig Car thief ring my guess,
Europe is awesome
My mother had a 1961 Buick Special station wagon. And I had a 1971 Volkswagen...both long gone by now. They did not survive in this warehouse in Portugal.
3:53 I think that's a BMW 501/502
portugal as some of the greatest colections of all original classic cars, some in barns and this is a real find that giullia SS is an example of what you can find in an old mans barn
