'Medicine' was written especially for the Zane Lowe curated rescore of the 'Drive' movie soundtrack.
After we stole him we made our way from Los Angeles through the Californian desert to Las Vegas. Drowning my sorrows and (narrowly) avoiding conflict from many directions..... I sat down with Jim (Zane Lowe's Producer) and he began to explain to me how he was in the process of re-scoring a movie and did we want to be involved. The film in question was the modern classic ‘Drive’. So of course my answer was ‘yes’. We wrote Medicine for our chosen scenes. Medicine, it’s title and sentiment, goes all the way back to the original The 1975 project that was based in my bedroom. It’s a new piece of music informed by the genesis of our band and our love for ‘Drive’ as a film. Having the opportunity to re-score a movie of which we were already so familiar provided us with a sense of knowing and allowed us to be slightly more introspective than we maybe would have been approaching something unknown. The movie itself plays with the duality of resignment and hope - and this is most obvious and stirring in the scenes we chose to score. The song is a testament to that same idea and has in turn become one of our most personal and best loved pieces of music to date. I won’t delve into what the song is about lyrically because frankly I want to put those ideas to bed; but being provided with the context in which Medicine came to be, it allowed the song to become a mausoleum for those ideas, captured, diverted and frozen forever. Which is pretty cool x

My dad is addicted to drugs, but the drugs eat him now. Every now and then, he gets attacks and he had to stay in hospitals for a month now and then. He had an attack 6 times today, yesterday it was his birthday and so maybe he did stuff with his friends. The more I listen to this song, the more I understand why he can’t just quit it. A teenage hobby becoming a burden in old age. I can’t stop my tears while I am listening to this song. I don’t hate my father despite of how bad he is at parenting, one thing I know , he loves me a lot and so do I. Some people might not be good at parenting but he is good at being a musician, he is good at everything else. If tomorrow I don’t see him calling me, idk where I will be. I just don’t know if I should pray to God to end his suffering or pray that he stays alive no matter in what state

He's not an asshole, my dad is a drug addict too, but he is my dad and I love him, he started using drugs since he was very young and i know he loves me a lot, but drugs take control over you, it's not easy to stop, it's a very long and hard process, you get to a point where you want to stop using but can't because now your body is the one who do not allows it, you should let your dad know you there for him, at the end he's your dad, and he will always love you

I'm 15 and I've been listening to them since I was 13. I first listened to Chocolate and later fell in love with all their songs. And I do mean all. This is my favourite band and I love them so much. People say they're pretentious for talking about sex, drugs and being sad but this is not just a sad song or love song, I can relate to it. Robbers is about taking a chance, medicine is about something good you have to let go, fallingforyou is a love song, but so powerful right? And Matty inspires me because he's so honest and I can relate to him. There's this powerful feeling I get from listening to them. Something like spirituality or religion. When I feel like killing myself I listen to them and I feel better. It saves me. There music is magic.

No matter how many years pass by, I always come back to this song whenever I need an emotional and mental cleanse. Something about this song just makes me feel like I took a long, much needed walk in a city during midnight, feeling the cold air on my face, listening to the undisturbed silence of the usually loud city streets, and I'm all alone yet I don't feel lonely.
Watching this while the pandemic is ruining everything around me. A lot of my friends and family are losing jobs. Major companies in my area are closing down. Those few opening chords gave me goosebumps and almost brought tears to my eyes. But the photograph of that city skyline makes me feel like everything is gonna be alright.

The 1975 basically just wrote a song describing my feeling towards them. The lyrics sum up my love for this band. They are my medicine.
Funny enough, I heard this song after getting some bad news about my health. As I was taking the bus home, with light snow falling outside, I couldn't help thinking how this band has a track for virtually every moment and every feeling.
This has been my favourite song from them as long as I can remember and always thought it needed so much more recognition. And now I'm rewatching educating Manchester and its playing in the intro of the second ep and it just makes me so happy

This band was suggested by my one of the close friends. I was amazed at her choice of music, I really felt first 01:13 minutes. I was high and I cried over a song while I had just listened for the first time. My friend, who suggested me this "wonderful peace of innocence, creating a peaceful environment around you", didn't knew that I liked her. I went to her place to meet her after a long time. It was the time when she was going through a major emotional breakup. She behaved very different towards me as if I was very close to her as well. She told me how difficult it had been for her and the other things. I just sat there and listened to her. We got high and then we started listening to her playlist. Then this song came like a blessing for me. When the very first tune came, she said I just love this song, when I get high. She then told me while we were listening to this song, every one love this song but no-one appreciates these first 01:13 minutes of music. If anyone does that would have her heart. I was just looking at her and how innocently she described this art of music. She then came close, held my hands onto her waist and hugged me. We started dancing together. It is always something very special for anyone who had wished the same thing with his/her crush. It was happening with me. We didn't kiss eachother. We felt eachother. The song ended and the new song came and it was "Falling For You" this time. It was like someone from up somewhere really wanted something to happen between us. I hugged her more tightly and then I finally had the guts to say "I have always liked you so much. I have always cared for you so much. And I will always do this if you ever want me to be with you. I know you are going through a bad emotional phase in your life but trust me I will sort each and everything for you. And will always keep you like my medicine". The day when she died I told her the same thing. I told her the same thing in the morning while she was leaving for office. It's been 4 years and I still listen to this "peaceful innocence" every day.

Songs are meant to be interpreted different ways. That's the beauty behind songs like this, there are different ways to interpret and feel about the music and lyrics. That's why The 1975 is so great, they leave room for that interpretation. That makes the songs more personal, and special for each individual.
i love the 1975 so much. they were the first band i listened to that wrote songs with actual meaning. they basically introduced into a whole new world of music where songs are deep and beautiful works of art in contrast to the poppy, bubble-gum type of songs i previously listened to. i regret not seeing them live that one time they came a few years back. hopefully they come back soon. xx

It's such a nostalgic song, and it almost takes me back to their younger years, even if I don't know them personally, the song is almost so personal that I can reach in for emotions.
