"Starting in 1978, most Grateful Dead shows featured what became affectionately known as a Cowboy Medley. The country/western songs that were primarily sung by Bob Weir had been a part of the repertoire since 1969, but in 1978 they began joining them into medleys, with the most common being Me and My Uncle / Mexicali Blues and Mama Tried / Big River, with common variations on these combinations, as heard here from 1990 in Raleigh." - David Lemieux
Like chocolate and peanut butter. Fantastic. I’m not sure words could describe this band. Even at there worst they were better than most. Jerry can put you anywhere he’d like you. The music really did play the band. The fkn best. Period.
I remember it hadn't rained in Raleigh in over a month. Several thousand fans were on the hill that was at one end of the stadium at that time. Before the Dead came on, it started raining and the entire crowd on that hill rushed the field. Security got out of the way as several thousand people went over the fence to join those of us in the football field... magical memory...
I can still remember this show! A number of friends and myself used to catch almost every show east of the Mississippi river starting in the mid 80's when we we're old enough and had the means. Man I seriously miss those days sometimes! Dead shows and Phish shows were our thing!
Phil looking like the guy who was always picked last in Gym class! But playing Bass like it's his world and we're just living in it!! Smokin' versions!
I remember going to the very top of Carter Finley Stadium to watch the show as close to the stars as I could. I met this really interesting young couple with a backpack. They asked if I wanted to see what was inside and, at the time, they seemed harmless. Fortunately, they had two ferrets in there. all the while, the Dead was playing like it was the soundtrack to that moment. I wish I remembered what song was playing.
I sort of kind of recall ferrets as well would have been in California maybe '90. Weird. Maybe song playing when you saw them was Loser (Last ferret deal in the country...) or Brokedown Palace (Ferret you well...)
Usually They played Greensboro indoors. This was a rare outdoor treat for Us. Shout Out To Bruce & the great job getting our peace sign necklaces. Plus, I got to see a deadhead sticker on a cadillac when I gave him a ride back home after the show.
Something keeps happening every time I listen to this band…..my head starts to bop up and down and back and forth, and I can’t stop as long as the music plays. I loved seeing them live, it was always a major event. Damn! They were great!
The Grateful Dead are like wow I love their music I especially loved one concert I worked where they turned into skeletons on stage while they were playing that was one Halloween night I forget what year but whoa!
My favorite part of the song!!!! Makes me laugh 😂 And not in a mean malice manner!!! Just sounds funny when ya sing it!!! And I’m always singing to my favorite band on the planet!!! Weeeeeee!!! ❤☀️😎💃🏻👀😂🌿🍃🌤️🙏☮️🎸🇺🇸🥁💨💨💨💨💨💨💨🦮💨💨💨

An old saying...the Grateful Dead aren't the best at what they do...but they are the only ones who do what they do!
Chocolate and cheese.
During me and my uncle Phil's bass is like a steam train in crazy speed... what a ride!!!

Unusually wild hair on Bob!
Yes, and his shorts are a bit long.

⚘🧸⚘🧸⚘🧸⚘🧸⚘
One of their many song cycles that leaves me cold. Most of their music was like that
I dress like Bob everyday. Completely unintentionally.
Phil’s “fashion icon” white socks.
What kind of socks are you supposed have?
I heard Phil Lesh never played a show where he wasn't tripping on LSD. I believe it.
Fucking SOLID
Bobby Weir looks like Big Ern McCracken
...and i left his dead ass there by the side of the road!
My favorite part of the song!!!! Makes me laugh 😂 And not in a mean malice manner!!! Just sounds funny when ya sing it!!! And I’m always singing to my favorite band on the planet!!! Weeeeeee!!! ❤☀️😎💃🏻👀😂🌿🍃🌤️🙏☮️🎸🇺🇸🥁💨💨💨💨💨💨💨🦮💨💨💨
.
Im sorry but the sound coming out of Brents keyboards just sucks. The only times I enjoy him is when he is on the organ
Yeah that digital piano sound is grim. It's a shame as it's the only blott on their 90s sound imo. Same when Vince Wellneck joined.
Hate to say it but it’s true 💁♂️
Think about horse while your singing with shorts on.
I love, love, love the Grateful Dead, but these dudes should NOT wear shorts. They don't have the legs to pull off this look! Yikes.
I love gay cowboy songs.lol
Gerry has ni socks
Best Big Rivers were Brent Big Rivers
