omg! I was at this show and about 3 more nights before this. My friend would joke that we did this every night, driving into the city about an hour each way. It was a good young memory. My brother who drove all of us in a van & was the biggest deadhead has Alzheimer's now. It is sad, but bittersweet.
i have seen over 175 shows..in my life, just hit me that Jerry had the best band ever to unleash his scales..yes I have heard Bob on a bad nite, but the other boys were always there
Me and My Uncle is best known by the Grateful Dead. Bob Weir had the voice to carry it over. John Phillips was so drunk when he wrote it he actually forgot that he wrote it. Joni Mitchell does a nice version, as does John Denver. So I listen to the altogether. Weir and the Dead. Joni Mitchell. John Denver. John Phillips. Then I cover my own version. I have never seen the Dead Live. I saw Bob Weir play with one of his bands and he did Uncle and it was great. Mexicali is great too.
That was when jerry comped me back. I should have kept the ticket. I got it from bill walton and kiki Vander weigh. I was just a dumb kid, but i had got him chesterfields and twinkies or something once at 16 at passaic. Any way he kept his word.
The boys learned well from the folksingers like Joni.. hoped they thanked her.. but probably not. Changed the traditional lyrics up nicely, too. We all should've been better people in the Sixties.. but we were having such a good time. No time for chivalry. Too bad. And so the story goes..
Great versions of both songs but the the hell filmed it? There is Jerry playing these long amazing solos and the cameraman has the back of the drummers head or Bob's shoulder. A few times you can see him play. Still glad to have the footage...
Yeah, you'd think given the prime venue, the camera crew would not have done a fairly shoddy job of it. They ought to have more shots of Jerry wailing on lead, like you said. But, I also agree that both songs were kickass!
Who is the stranger that he shot? Girls dad? Maybe her pimp? I just wonder who the stranger that rolled into town to take her... Either way killer tune.
Wait. . . so he presumably killed his own Uncle, just for some stolen Gold ? Or was his Uncle wounded during the escape from the Cowboy shootout, and succumbed to the wound on the side of the road?
'uncle' needed a verse about hookers (billie jean ??) so i wrote one: 'walked up to the cat house picked out a tart hung up my pistol she did her part as soon as my head cleared and i could think went back to that bar room for another drink and it was then that out good time began to sink ..'
I can't believe he shot his Uncle ... and then left his dead ass by the side of the road? That's pure greed man ... He's not going to be grateful dead ... He's going to Hell 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I've pictured this entire ride, story and shootout of him and Uncle in my head 1000 times over the years

I’m sorry about your brother. Thank you for sharing your story. It’s very sweet of you . I lost my brother way too young .
love these songs, nothing like the Dead
Uncle was most played. 605 times, that we know of.
Followed by Sugar Magnolia, Not Fade Away, and China > Rider
I know that I never tired of hearing it.
I heard that it was "Mama Tried" but it wouldn't surprise me if it "Mexicali".
giggle while i smile...can't get enough of this song...ever... i mean does it get any better than this?
No, it doesn't
Agreed, no it doesn't 😺
favorite tune of all time
Great song to latch on to
Miss these boys too ....watched them from 1979 till 1990

LMAO @03:05 at that dude groovin' + bootlegging this show on his recorder... he then realizes he's on camera... his face is priceless.
you cant boot leg a dead show. they welcome recordings. Jerry even said" once we played the song we are done with it"
classic & timeless & priceless=]
Best combo
Hell yeah. that was great. Thanks for sharing. !
Love this Bobby song.
Not complaining - I just wish the horn lines were on a guitar, chorded out and pinched with fingerpicks. Love Mexicali Blues. My favorite Weir tune!
timeless
Primo Bobby👌✌️
😎 thanks #middaybluesbreak
now go see joni mitchell's version on you tube from 1965 ..!!
this rocks mexicali blues

Why do they keep playing the same song over and over again?
German Exchange Student who got a Miracle!
Wait. . . so he presumably killed his
own Uncle, just for some stolen Gold ?
Or was his Uncle wounded during the escape from the Cowboy shootout,
and succumbed to the wound
on the side of the road?
looks like jerrys about to pass out..
Looked to me that he was sizzling on lead.
That key sound just doesn’t work on the country tunes like Keith’s piano did

I matt shelley.actuallynwrote this song in morocco. deirdre simon stole it and traded it to phillips for heroim
Better with Bob and a simple drumbeat. Too complicated with the what, eleven members of the band?
