One thing I love about your style of videos is about talking through your process. It's not blabbering to us lol! A lot of you tubers just show a sped up time lapse, but I personally don't find that as relatable or as motivating. It's hugely inspirational to hear someone else go through the motions of "I'm not sure if this looks good or not, but I had fun." or having a part of a painting that you originally loved and then ended up being a fan of. Love watching and hearing your process!
I'm so glad this is helpful!!! It's a balance constantly of what to show - the dance of too much or too little. I try to share what I would want an artist I admire to share.
Oh myyyy this vid is so great! @sandihester you are so INSPIRING I’m smitten with these vids and they are so encouraging to go a paint loose. Thank you so much for sharing your gift and joy with us. X
Wow, this channel is what I've been looking for!!!! YES I love that you don't just blab and complain about the things you need to get done and you just PAINT and share with us tips and tricks on how to live an artist life! WOW, totally excited about binge watching all your videos! You make me wanna paint and I have a boost of artsy mojo back in my now! Thanks for being REAL and loving what you do!
Well goodness - thank you so much!!! I'm sooooo glad you are enjoying it!!! And extra glad to know it gave you an artsy boost :)!!!! Really appreciate your kind comment!
Sandi, your way of setting up and painting from a still life is so inspiring. I enjoy painting in your "old" style of capturing light and shadow, but I am in the thick of crafting a more whimsical, wonky style in view of illustrating children's books. Your processes and way of painting loose are just what I need to help me on this journey. You are helping me see HOW to see and translate my ideas in to a fun, childlike language. I am still far away from my sought-after ideal, but thanks to you, I am a lot further along than I have ever been before.🥰. Thank you, thank you, thank.
I just found your channel recently (2 days ago??) and have been watching a TON of your videos since. It's so refreshing and real to see your whole process and the waves of emotion you go through with each piece (loving, hating, and all of the things in between). I've learned so much from your channel already...tons of wisdom about practicing non-attachment to each piece and following through with the entire process. Most importantly - you have so much fun when you're painting - the Joy radiates from you and it really inspires me to go create to feel THAT feeling and nothing less. Thanks Sandi!!!
Well goodness Jessica - what a great note to get this morning from you!!! Thank you so much and I'm THRILLED you're enjoying the channel so much and getting something from it. I really appreciate you taking time to write me - so encouraging!!!! And... a big fat WELCOME!!!!
I am always looking forward to watch a video of yours! 😊 I always feel so warm, welcomed and inspired while watching. And I love your work, I already painted some little paintings that are inspired by your looseness and I love them and loved doing them. You are great, thanks for those amazing videos 🥰
I am almost caught up on your videos - and this one was just a delight! I literally laughed out loud with the fruit jumping across the screen (and thus under the couch) - haven’t we all been there! 🤣 I love how you titled this the most fun you’ve ever had - but - I also hope to see more of your videos with the same title, because you shouldn’t only have one time to experience that joy! 💕
I loved this video so much Sandi - it's filled with so much joy! You've inspired me so much to start painting for the process and not for the end result. Also, your studio is so charming and full of character - I love seeing all of the antique, unique pieces you have filling the space - beautiful!
I’ve been watching from the top of your video list down while color swatching in a new journal...seeing how my mediums look on this new paper. So i haven’t been commenting on each video. But I’m soooo loving your videos. The ‘shelf’ of the mouth on that line will really help me. I’ve done that formula for a long while but i always fuss at the mouth...ahah! Thanks Sandi! And....you’ve made me realize i can go back and change a painting i don’t like instead of scrapping it. I hated a funky little lady I made earlier today...and went back and changed her hair and put polka dots and cuffs on her dress and wow...what a difference. Thanks so much for all your inspiration. You just never know what will ‘touch’ us and make sense for us. Just keep on doing these videos I ask..please! Lol.
I love this! I would call it "Where's the Bird?" coz it looks like everyone, including the cat, is looking for it and we can imagine that only the crocodile knows... 😄
Hi Sandi, You said you enjoyed painting this picture maybe the best. I definately loved the video THE BEST. I love seeing your process and setting up the still life. I get really frozen when I can't decide what to paint and assume every other artist always knows what to paint all the time! The looseness I love and seeing how things gets changed around and that it is ok to do that. Thank you so much.
Gaye, we ALL struggle around our paintings trying to figure our what to do and what's not working. It does get easier with time and I'm getting braver to not give up on a painting and to take chances. I'm THRILLED you enjoyed the video so much!!! whoohoooo!
I would title it “Unexpected Happy” a term you used early in the painting. Also, I think the looseness and joy you had at the beginning dwindled away with your “criticism” of it. Keep loose, Sandi!
Love the painting. Fascinating to see you paint the rug and then build on that. Love the alligator too! Love your style!! Thank you for brightening my grey day here in CT....
Absolutely inspired !! LOVED the process ....your enjoyment shows in the finished painting ....fun, playful, whimsey.... However....I do feel it IS a saleable piece because of how the colors move and interact. LOVE IT!
When still life refuses to be still. :) Reminds me of my vacuum cleaner. Apparently, it gets excited easily. I got my food delivery and walked back in saying, "Food's here!" like someone else lives here and will come running. Well, the vacuum cleaner woke up and came out from under the chair. I said, "No, not you! Go back to bed!" The vacuum cleaner turned around and went back to its cradle and said, "Charging now." So, I guess I now have a pet.
Hey Sandi--I sent a comment earlier but somehow it must have gotten lost ....so i want to say i LOVED this video ! and i LOVED that crazy painting ! ( looks sellable to me ! ) I am inspired to paint and to paint more loosely but also to THINK more loosely. I mean look at this situation ...there's a table with some bananas and binoculars but what we end up with is this nutty party with an alligator and a sneaky cat and strange heads and some leftover legs and a bird ! Holy moly ! FANTASTIC!!
Thank you for sharing your thought process on how to plan your painting and not to treat it as to precious changes can’t be made. You are making it easier for me to do artwork without worrying 🤦🏼♀️ about it and just enjoying the process 🥳Than you, thank you, thank you 👏 👩🏻🎨 🧑🏼🎨 You are an amazing artist and teacher. 🤩
I would definitely buy this painting, it has so much character. If I was to title it, it would have been “The cat chased the bird off the chair” I personally think your own cat had something to do with it. Saw him/her stretching lazily in the background.
I really love the painting. The process is wonderful. I wonder if I should give it a go. I have never painted like that. It really looks fun. And believe me, it does not look easy. I can see your experience in your work. Thanks for all you do. I really enjoy your videos. I have learned so much. 💛
I'm also terrible at naming my art! Love the way you use the still life, and I'll definitely try the mirror trick when I, hopefully, will be able to get back to painting. Thank you for sharing your process!
This is a super inspiring and fun video---I love the painting, the process, and the way you talked us through how you go about gathering stuff for a still life. I am *totally* inspired to get some stuff and start painting!
Go do it Patricia- it’s so much fun!! Just throw some things that feel exciting and throw them on a table or heck - just put them on the floor! I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
How fun to let your imagination and thoughts lead the way, I really like how you change things if you’re not happy with them rather than panic. I love the cat and 🐊. I need to set up a still life, I may even get the children to help, it would be so funny to see what they put on the table. Maybe for fun you should ask Grady to pick items from around your home for your still life and get him to place them. Be a fun painting or sketch 🎨 ✏️
I do still feel the panic at times - or more like “ugh!!! Nothings working “ - I’m in that right now with another large painting. So I have to consciously move back into - “hey, remember - we’re suppose to be having fun!” Mode. Great idea about the kids setting up your still life. I also love the idea of grady setting up my still life! Possible future video?!?!
Luv you. Luv your art. You are so inspiring. how do you get your fluid paints to cover other colors when you are doing so many layers? aren't the fluid paints more transparent? I can see that you do layers at times but other times it seems you dont have to do as many layers.
Now how much fun was that? I don't know why but for some reason your painting made me think about when I was a kid, we would build colorful crazy quilt tents and the boys playing monsters would sneak up on us and scare us. Nothing whatsoever related but LOL that's what I kept thinking about. Truly enjoyed and I think I'm going to try to paint that image in my mind.
I think you’re very sellable! I love what you do and you just make it look like fun! You could at the very least put out a chapbook of some of what you’re proud of. With a few words of your process or something. I would buy it!
Hi Sandi, I have been wondering where I could get a similar (if not the same!) yellow bookshelf organizer you have @27:55 I see it in all your videos and I need one in my life!

I just love to watch how much you enjoy the process and are not so precious about it. It's a way of painting that always gives me happy feelings.
So glad you liked it Karen!
I love you using your Granny's tray as a palette. It's full of love.
