    yes, it is a real thing. striated muscle fibers come in two distinct kinds: Type I "slow twitch" and Type II "fast twitch". Slow twitch muscles have better vascularization and are more suited to endurance activity, whereas fast twitch muscles are better suited to bursts of peak output. Everyone has a mix of both kinds. I do not know if there is any race-linked difference in the ratio. It would not surprise me if there was, but it would also not surprise me if there wasn't. What would surprise me (a little) would be if such a difference in the ratio was particularly significant.

    • @moni13000
      @moni13000 2 года назад +6

      Yea I haven’t heard anything about any particular group being different than another in this case. As far as I understood, it was all the same, tho of course personal genetics and health could maybe affect it. But nothing so specific to any group of people.

    • @gordonpromish9218
      @gordonpromish9218 2 года назад +11

      @@moni13000 - it has been 30 years since I last did any serious study of evolutionary, cell and molecular (genetic), and developmental biology, so I cannot say.
      It is possible that relatively-isolated breeding populations undergoing differing environmental and sexual selective pressures would develop race-linked differences in the ratio of the different fibers. Other distinct differences have developed (a subgroup developed elevated hemoglobin and increased lung capacities rendering them better-adapted for living in the Himalayas, as one example).
      It is also possible that the Neanderthal genetic contribution to Europeans (largely absent from the sub-Saharan African populations) could have created such a difference.
      So... It is possible.
      I just don't know if there is such a difference in the skeletal muscles between the European and African breeding populations.

    • @Fishmorph
      @Fishmorph 2 года назад +3

      It might not be a huge difference for most people. It’s possible that at the highest level, even a 2% edge is all you need. But in general, there are so many other biases in professional sports - cultural acceptance of the sport, financial and community access to training facilities and equipment, bias of the team manager in hiring, differences in how you trained in your game (regimented athletics vs street ball, let’s say), how much merchandise a guy is likely to sell, whether a guy goes to college or not and whether he chooses to enter the draft or do something else with his degree. You’d have to see how many people are in the hiring pool - who *wants* to play this sport? That question may be tied to knowing what other opportunities exist for people who chose not to enter the draft. Maybe more white players choose to use the degree and work in their dad’s company, because that option exists for them due to generational wealth. Maybe the team looks at two candidates and says “these two players are equally good for our team, but the black player has more style and will get more fans to the game. He’ll sell more jerseys and hats than the boring white guy. And our fan base is 55% black, so let’s go with that dude.” Then maybe when all that bias is worked out, you could look at biology and say “maybe this group is inclined to a small advantage.”

    • @EchoJ
      @EchoJ 2 года назад +5

      @@gordonpromish9218 interesting info! Thanks for sharing😊
      My thoughts: considering that black Americans are descended from people who were literally bred like livestock for strength and endurance, it wouldn’t surprise me if there’s something to the thought that our particular subgroup of African descendants may be prone to genetic differences that could be considered advantageous in physical activity like sports. Similarly, I know there’s a LOT of pushback on the “Slavery Hypertension Hypothesis,” for example, but I think black Americans are a unique case that should be explored a bit differently when it comes to heredity to determine if purposeful forced-breeding tactics by slavers impacted us in ways that separate us from our continental African cousins.
      Personally, I’d rather know the truth (one way or the other) than stay ignorant because there are those who are more comfortable hiding behind political correctness to avoid a possibly uncomfortable truth.

    • @gordonpromish9218
      @gordonpromish9218 2 года назад +3

      @@EchoJ The characteristics of Americans, as mixed as most of us are, might not be the place to start.
      If I were to go about studying this, I would first try to establish baseline norms for the three overall breeding populations (Northern European, Mediterranean Ring, and sub-Saharan African) in their home ranges.
      Whenever possible, I would like to be able to compare the genomes of the modern subjects with the oldest useful preserved archaic genetic samples for populations in those same regions.
      Then I would have some solid standards against which to compare both muscle structures and corresponding genetics in current Americans.

    Great vid P!! I love honesty. Nobody better than Bill Burr and you’re reactions are on point! Consequently, I was the same way in league ball playing against a black guy. Knowing he was thinking, “oh hell nah!”. So I played D. Didn’t care about offense at all. Just shutting my guy down, jawing back and forth in respect and trying my ass off to grab every board!!! I loved it. And you’re right about sports killing racism, it was never a race thing more than a “your sport, but I can play still” thing.
    Proof, everyone was freaking out about the LA Riots and Rodney King. I’m in the same state, but in my mind it has nothing to do with me. I still remember that night playing at the courts with about 20 dudes all mixed color just hoopin’, playing real hard, talking a little smack, following it up and staying on the court. Everyone got along for 4-5 hours and I remember feeling bonded ever since, whenever I played. The court is color blind, don’t ever change that!
    Sorry for the rant, I’m just sick of it all man. You were spot on when you said that coach didn’t deserve to be fired! He was right!!! Ha ha! Great vid man.

    You have different type of muscles Quick and Slow are skeletal muscles, basically they move you. Quick twitch muscles fibers are the things you want for fast reaction times, but they fatigue easily, most athletes focus on these. Slow twitch (aren't really slow, but they are slower then the quick versions) are more for prolonged activity and they can work for a lot longer before getting tired, think sprinting versus marathon. You also have muscle types like cardiac muscle (your heart) which pretty much never take a break and work from a fetus until you die. you have smooth muscle which is like your digestive system, you don't really control them, they work for a long time without needing breaks, but occasionally will slow down, especially if you need to divert energy to other places like if you need fight or flight, they will stop and push all energy toward your skeletal muscles. Real thing and I have heard white people saying that as a real theory, but there is no real basis to it that I know of, and kinda is steeped in racism.

    His Hitler bomb was great. Not just the bit but him just dropping the name itself as a gag was comedy gold.

    Dude you’ve always been good. Even before you had enough followers to influence RUclips’s algorithms you’ve always been good…and authentic and thoughtful
    You went on a Harry Mack tear early on and I’d venture to say you reacting to him will always be underrated cause your head catches most everything he says. Where as most people can’t process it myself included. Unless I’m listening a couple times
    But yea it’s almost get you some sponsors time ✌️

    2:13 - Yeah. Fast-Twitch Vs. Slow-Twitch Muscle Fibers. I think Eastern African population develop more of these fibers. That's why so many sprinters come from that area.

    quick twitch muscle fiber (white) is generally found in sprinters bc they fatigue faster. Slow (red) twitch fibers are found in distance runners ( which don't contract faster but they don't get fatigued fast. We all have slow and fast twitch muscles.

    Yes, fast twitch and slow twitch muscle fibers are a real thing.
    Fast twitch fibers are for sudden, powerful movements but they fatigue faster than slow twitch fibers.
    Fast twitch muscle fibers can generate energy without oxygen, thus a more instantaneous and stronger contraction. Slow twitch fibers rely on oxygen for energy synthesis and are slower and fatigue less quickly because they can clear lactic acid faster than fast twitch.
    Everyone has both types of fibers, but we have them in differing ratios within our muscles.
