I made a bowl using a piece of Elm.
This traditional Japanese technique has a similar effect to sandblasting. I finished the piece with red stain from Hampshire sheen intrinsic colours and Danish oil .

Cheers buddy. It's got Danish oil finish (needs another coat, ideally) this type is food safe, but I'd probably use it for non-food items/decorative.
Can't have too many bowls about , although I'm being told otherwise 🤦‍♂️

A beautiful job, I love shou sugi ban and am just learning to turn. I have some ancient hard pine that I carved a trencher from, I plan to try turning a pair of bowls to go with it and may steal your idea.

@@johnsherlock1920 Before I retired, I was a carpenter so I'm used to shavings but when I tried my first turning project, a pair of scythe handles from a couple of old olive branches I was amazed at the size of the pile of shavings.

Not a fan of the inside (matter of taste ofc) but the outside looks amazing! One of the best burnt finishes I've seen on youtube. Subtle superficial burning, but really black! As it should be.

@@johnsherlock1920 Cool. I'm thinking about doing Shou sugi ban on a walnut gun stock. Just a light char not enough to crack then sand for a nice contrasting colors then do a traditional sanded in linseed oil from M1 garand gear.com. In your experience do you think that would come out nice? Thanks

      Thanks Joe!.
It's called a JSP powercap respirator. I got it from a shop in the UK called Yandles (about £210). However, it's sold under different brands , but i think as the same model. I've seen it for quite a bit more in the US (about $400+) . Cheers
