This river has a length of 3,185 km and forms a large basin of 854,000 km².
The width of its channel is quite variable, between one kilometer and more than three during the last 1000 km of its course.
It is the longest river in Alaska and was a major means of transportation during the Klondike Gold Rush, between 1898 and 1899.
The name Yukon comes from an Athabascan language, which means "great river", of which it is remarkably worthy.
