  • POSEIDON TAKES THE THRONE
    Poseidon having just won the war against the Titans with his siblings, goes to claim his throne and kingdom. As the Titans have been banished to Tartarus, Poseidon must take his throne from the last Titans left, Oceanus and Tethys. The last independent titans left from the old regime, their fate is left to the new ruler, if they give it up without a fight.
    Living Mythology is an attempt to entertain, relax and educate all in the one place. We are trying to forge narratives so that people can experience the religions and mythologies of the world as they were meant to be. Not as dry academic monoliths, but as living breathing tales and parables as experienced by the peoples who worshipped these beings, in an attempt to make sense of their own lives and the world around them.
    This channel is in its infancy, so we hope to improve and develop it as we gain more experience.
    All of the tales are taken from very conflicting traditions across many centuries, so there will be many a moment when decisions need to be made to create a more cohesive narrative. If we present something that seems to be in contrast to details, rest assured we have researched many forms of the traditions and come to the conclusions we have done to form the videos.
    There will NEVER be total agreement on any of these narratives due to the history and differing ways they developed over the centuries.
    These videos are for entertainment and an easy gateway to the subject. If you wish more academic details then please direct your attention to the wide source material and others who perform those types of academic video essays.

    From the version I remember Poseidon is only the God of the Seas while Oceanus, TItan of the Ocean and Tethys, Titaness of Fresh Water got to keep their titles as a reward by Zeus for staying neutral in the war. Yes Poseidon got to be god of the seas, but Oceanus and Tethys were never demoted from ocean and freshwater

    It is in keeping with Posidon to believe he was tricked, when drawing of lots was his idea and agreed on by both of his brothers to keep thigns as impartial as possible. 'Let Fate decide.' The problem is when you let Fate decide you lose all right to be upset with the result.
    I do agree wit hhis assessment of the Trident however. Sure the thunderbolt has more inherent Power, but it is a weapon of pure offense. One cannot defend wit ha thunderbolt. One cannot easily use it as a tool. the Trident is a wonderful weapon and while Posidon i a very... brutish person? It does speak well of him taht he chose a weapon that is as much tool as anything else.
    Again Posidon shows wisdom that is not normally on display by realizing of the realms his is the largest and the most needed. Without the seas or rivers the lands and skies grow barren leaving only the grandmother to watch her grandchildren shrivel.
    The worst part of it all? Had Posidon been a better diplomat, blessed with a better temper? They would have been powerful stalward allies and stewarts of the realm. Loyal and wise council.

      In Greek myths, no such thing as having it all. If Poseidon was as you described, he would’ve been relegated into the background in myths like Hestia. She was one of the original 6 but because of her diplomatic and non confrontational nature, there’s almost no stories about her.

  • @PungiFungi
    @PungiFungi 5 месяцев назад +2

    Poseidon's name supposedly means consort/husband of the Earth, which suggested he could've been a native god who was originally paired off with a mother/fertility goddess and was incorporated into the Greek pantheon, thus became secondary to Zeus, and hence his antagonistic attitude toward Zeus being the ruler. This also made his infatuation with Demeter and his association with horses, a land animal, a lot clearer and more sense. In fact the Greeks incorporated a lot of local gods and goddesses into their religion, all of whom, of course, became the subjects of the Greek's head god Zeus. This certainly explained why there is so much strife and infighting in the Greek pantheon.

    By the gods, out of the three, only Hades seems to have been humbled by his throne. He accepts his role and burden with stoicism. Zeus clings to his thone jealously. He makes decisions based on fear and doubt. Poseiden couldn't give a damn about his. He would rather pursue his brother's, then bother to sit on his own. They may have earned their thrones by overthrowing their tyrant father. But, only Hades has truly deserved it. The other brothers petty squabbles will cause much suffering by the time their tales are finally concluded.

    • @singletona082

      The only time Hades seems to show his brothe'rs vices seems to be with persephone. Yet at the same time? One could argue Persephone was being smothered by demeter and saw she could cultivate something akin to gentleness within Hades. After all, his is the last word and the last laugh. And what being who has a loyal and favored pet can be truly wholly irredeemably Evil?
      Even mortal despots have had favored hounds and loyal companions. Why not the lord of the grave?

  • @kiltedcripple

    It is an interesting thing to me how human the Greek gods are. In modern myth making, we tend to rely on archetypes, like a wind God might be flighty and forgetful, a water good might be nourishing but harsh and unforgiving... they didn't code the personality of the gods to the perceived attributes of the element. Poseidon is just a dude, same as Hades, same as Zeus, he's just a dude, who reaches when he feels slighted, delights when he's placated, etc. He's not smart, he's not wise, he's not impartial or detached. He's just a dude. I like that.

    • @Fredysaurus
      @Fredysaurus Год назад +2

      Interesting comment, it does make me wonder if this is a result of the Greek myths being so well recorded that we have enough" data" so to speak to paint a very full character for each of them, whereas the same can't be said of most pantheons across the world, potentially causing our basic archetypal interpretations of many of them.
