I love all the old Cub games too. The '84 team was the first baseball team I followed. Just seeing the graphics like the lineups bring back memories along with Arnie finding the women in the stands :). And as it's been mentioned it's nice to see games that are just old regular season games, doesn't have to be the Sandberg game or the division clincher to peak my interest.
I was fourteen when this game aired. I had been watching the Cubs for two years already on WGN on cable from the Milwaukee area. The Brewers were hardly ever on television so I would catch the end of these games after school and watch the games throughout summer vacation. This was the year I really became a Cubs fan and am still one to this day, much to my wife's dismay as she is a Brewers season seat holder. There are a lot of awesome memories packed into this one video, Harry giving Steve crap about his cigars, the camera panning to all the pretty gals during the inning breaks after returning from commercial, not to mention the players that I really grew to love.
John Hallihan, Clubhouse manager, Uncle, for Pittsburg pirates 48 odd some years. I bat boy'd from 1970 on and off until 1979 when they came to Chicago. Wille Stargell was a Man's man and his teammates were mentored by Willie. Dave Parker will tell you that without Willie, he would not have been the player he was.
Love the repartee between Harry and Steve. Used to love watching these games, especially that season. I remember it was that summer, I think, when Prince Harry was born to Chuck and Di in Britain. Steve said that naming the infant Harry would doom him to a life of decadence.
Amazing how in these old Cubs games from 80s and 90s, there is never any mention of TJ surgery. The good old days when the good pitchers never had to worry about that, having success without throwing close to 100. Many throwing 200+ innings every year.
So many former Phillies in this game. Practically the entire starting lineup for the Cubs, Hebner, Sandberg, Bowa, Mathews, Dernier, Moreland. Then you have Morrison on the Bucs' side.
Thanks for uploading this! It's cool to see other random regular season Cubs games from 1984 other than the usual classics like the (Sandberg Game), the division clincher against the Pirates at Pittsburgh, the 1984 NLCS games against San Diego, etc. Back during the 1984 Cubs season, I was 10 years old growing up on Chicago's west side. I wasn't really into watching baseball and sports in general consistently prior to the fall of 1985. I do recall the 1983 White Sox (Winning Ugly) team. But even with that team I didn't follow them all the way through till the end of their ALCS series against Baltimore. And I wasn't even aware of the 1984 Cubs and the special season they were having and Ryne Sandberg. I was into G.I. Joe, Transformers, He-Man, Star Wars, Voltron, music and pop culture in general. It wasn't until the fall of 1985 when I got wind of the Chicago Bears and Walter Payton, William 'The Refrigerator' Perry, Jim McMahon, etc. I followed the Bears all the way through to their Super Bowl XX victory against the Patriots in late January 1986. By the spring of 1986, I was starting to play sports more like softball, basketball, etc. I also started to watch the Cubs, White Sox and MLB baseball. The Cubs were doing poorly and one of the teams they struggled with was the Pittsburgh Pirates. How ironic that one of the Pirates that gave the Cubs fits was Rick Reuschel who was the Cubs starting pitcher who started this posted game against the Pirates in 1984. Several other Pirates who gave the Cubs problems were Tony Peña, Rafael Belliard, Jim Morrison, Johnny Ray and Doug Drabek. The Cubs who won the NL East in 1984 had a losing record to only one team that season. And that was the Pirates (8-10).
Hey, glad you're enjoying the games. Coincidentally I was 10 years old that season too. Watched most of the games on WGN, that was really my first memories of watching much baseball. Then when school started in the fall coming home and watching the last few innings of the home games.. Great memories! I have a few more games from that era to post, so stay tuned.
@@retrosportsvision5873 Thanks for your reply and I'll be looking out. There's a game from late April 1987 with the Cubs in St. Louis against the Cardinals. The Cubs were down like 4-1 late in the game. The Cubs got the bases loaded and a slumping Andre Dawson came up against Cardinals fireballer and closer Todd Worrell. Dawson hit a line drive missile out to left for a grand slam and the Cubs took the lead 5-4. That was the game winning blast and that really got Dawson going to his ,287 49 HR 137 RBI MVP season. The Cubs were in first place at the all star break. But the pitching collapsed and the Cubs finished 76-85 in last place, 18,5 games behind the Cardinals who won the division and went to the World Series. The two teams who were directly responsible for the Cubs falling apart and finishing last was the Cardinals who won 12 of 18 from the Cubs and the Pirates who won 14 of 18 from the Cubs.
I think i have one game from '87. I believe they were playing the Mets. That was a fun season too. Andre Dawson was just hitting everything in sight. I remember at least a couple brawls too when he was hit by pitches.
@@ricardolozano5356 I watched that on WGN as a 13 year old when that happened. My main concern was how long Dawson was gonna be out. Dawson only missed three games and was back in the lineup on July 11, 1987 against the Dodgers who came to Wrigley right after the Padres left town. The Cubs 1987 season was on of my favorite seasons watching Cubs baseball despite them finishing in last after being in first place at the all star break. And that was largely due to Andre Dawson's great season, Ryne Sandberg, Harry Carey, Steve Stone, etc.
I was 13 years old in 1984 and this is still my favorite sports team ever! Despite them losing in the NLCS! Steve Garvey😖😖 UGH! WHY'D THEY KEEP PITCHING TO HIM😥😥
Lol 😆 Harry said the Cubs need Paul Reuschel and not Rick Reuschel. Paul (Rick’s older brother) played for the Cubs in the 1970’s from 1975-1978. This was Rick’s last season with the Cubs, Rick played for the Cubs from 1972-1984.
The way Rick was pitching in '84 it's kind of hard to believe he went on to have that resurgence with San Francisco a few years later. Resurrected his career.
I miss seeing the players like back in the 70s like how jack and i miss seeing the cubs in the between innings they will have the cubs in blue and the red s are in red my favorite cubs game was against the Philadelphia 23 to 22
I think they should have left Reuschel in biggest Frazier gives up a home run almost right away. Reuschel was more valuable that year as a middle reliever for the Cubs though started quite a bit too. You would go on to have a Renaissance with the Pirates and the Giants as a starter later. At the time as a kid I didn't know about his glory years is a starter with the Cubs in the 70s. I know he played with them then though
The 1984 Pirates had the best pitching staff in baseball that year. But they had one of the worst hitting teams, a far cry from the Lumber Company of the 1970’s. Tim Stoddard pitching against them in the 11th, he was with the 1979 Orioles that lost the World Series to the Pirates. Rod Scurry who pitched for the Pirates late in this game, died from cocaine abuse in the early 90’s. This was also the last year of the gold jerseys and pants and black jerseys and pants for them. By then they no longer wore them at home and they were the road uniforms, wore all white uniforms at home.
@@sidstorch2615 The Pirates gave up the fewest runs in baseball that year and had the highest ERA+ at 117. The Tigers gave up 76 more runs than the Pirates but that was the fewest in the American League. They also had the second highest ERA+ of 113. The Tigers scored the most runs in baseball.
This was my childhood as a Chicago Southside native. I use to rush home from school to catch the game in the 3rd or fourth inning. I remember watching this game in real time. I was 13 years old in 1984.

LOVE the Pirates uniforms!!!
Me too. Too bad they got rid of these and went to conventional gray road uniforms in 1985.
