1990 Hayden Fry Show (Illinois highlights)
Thanks for putting this on RUclips! I had such fun at the game and I remember thinking the only thing that would've made it better was hearing Harry Caray's voice. Now I can and did.
FUN FACT: Carmelo Martinez and HOF Edgar Martinez are cousins.
0:12 That rendition of the National Anthem sounded like some alley cats having an orgy.
Incredibly I can see a baseball game, no endless graphics, launch angle, stock reports ect
20:36 "I never understood why Greek names all end in ''s'. There must be some reason for it." Only Caray could get away with this (obviously innocent) comment. Today, he would have been fired by the end of the inning. The final pitch was not included for some reason.
3:39 When the (normally humorless) umpires find your rendition of the National Anthem utterly ridiculous.
Forty years ago.
48 points over Shaq
Keith Moreland was the worst baserunner Cubs ever had as a player, LOL
I think they should have left Reuschel in biggest Frazier gives up a home run almost right away. Reuschel was more valuable that year as a middle reliever for the Cubs though started quite a bit too. You would go on to have a Renaissance with the Pirates and the Giants as a starter later. At the time as a kid I didn't know about his glory years is a starter with the Cubs in the 70s. I know he played with them then though
I remember watching this game in the summer with my friends what a great year for the cubs
A lot of ex Philles,wow.
Three Rivers Stadium had the best organ in the national league.
John Hallihan, Clubhouse manager, Uncle, for Pittsburg pirates 48 odd some years. I bat boy'd from 1970 on and off until 1979 when they came to Chicago. Wille Stargell was a Man's man and his teammates were mentored by Willie. Dave Parker will tell you that without Willie, he would not have been the player he was.
I grew up in the Cleveland area in the sixties and Jimmy was a fan favorite and a hero to us little kids.
Carltons last productive season.
who would have thought back then the cubs would lose the pennant that year because of a Gatorade soaked Mit and involve Duram and Buckner
Leon Durham OWNED Pascual Perez
How is Brewster getting away with wearing a necklace on the mound
In lived in New Orleans in 1984 and had a choice between watching Braves games on TBS or watching Cubs games on WGN. I found the Braves announcers so boring and dull and Harry Caray so boisterous and funny that I became a Cubs fan for years. This video reminded me of that contrast. So much dead air, so many pitches not called or commented on, so many tedious observations.
It's still bizarre to see all of these ex-Phillies leading The Cubs to the playoffs. The year before, The Big Red Machine led The Phils to The WS with Rose, Morgan & Perez.
Amazing how in these old Cubs games from 80s and 90s, there is never any mention of TJ surgery. The good old days when the good pitchers never had to worry about that, having success without throwing close to 100. Many throwing 200+ innings every year.
Back when catchers could actually hit a little.
Bob Boone was clutch cargo for The Phils.
Harry saying the Padres catcher's last name.... "Gooooosh" (In the first inning) By the eighth inning hed be saying "gooo goo lash " or some other total butchering of his name lol. The Bud would be taking full effect by then.
It's pronounced valenswella, idiots
Loved those Jo-Dee Chants at Wrigley; Great to See Jody Davis Homer & the Crowd Chant while he rounded the bases
I looked this over for a shot of Harry holding a glass of champagne as he managed the postgame from the game broadcast booth. Didn't find it but saw some great stuff! If that Caray toasting scene is "in here," I would appreciate knowing. (Nice that Harry thinks Brut's "Andre" is "The Expensive Stuff!"
No wonder the Red Sox couldn't win shit
The 1980s when America was fun . Not this shitshow of today .
I hope the Cubs sent Gura back to where he came from
They did release him shortly after this, only made a couple starts.
I wonder is a major league team can use the Bat Boy as a pinch hitter, after all he is part of the team
I love these classics. Please add ANY San Diego Padres television broadcast from 1977-84. I've been searching for earliest televised Padres broadcast and only one vs Pirates '81 is earliest.. ANY Mets,Braves,Reds, Giants,Dodgers, Phillies broadcast vs Padres from the 70s or early 80s? Please add to archives for fan viewing. That would be a treasure
Crazy this is 40 years ago!
That anthem singer though.... Ooof
Love this! Anymore televised games from this series with Padres in Chicago? Regular season with Cubs in San Diego or Reds in San Diego??
Boy, Harry definitely had 3-4 beers before the game started. He sounded even more stewed than normal, haha
Wrigley Field opener. He had cause to celebrate pre-game.
Miss all these wonderful Cub announcers
Thank you for this game!⚾️
The games have never been the same without Harry and Steve
Agreed!
Rick Sutcliffe threw 157 pitches in this complete game win ⚾️ 🧢
This was my childhood as a Chicago Southside native. I use to rush home from school to catch the game in the 3rd or fourth inning. I remember watching this game in real time. I was 13 years old in 1984.
Chips and salsa time 1:33:16
Who would have known then that these two teams would later meet in the National League Championship Series?
John Sterling retired April 14 2024...he is 85 years old
40 years ago next month....OMG
Uniforms were so much better then. Now every team just wears boring gray and white with blue or red trim.
Awesome play by Bull Durham at 9:50
those were the days. nowadays the "leadoff man" would be sexist
Can anyone confirm did the pirates shoot off fireworks for the cubs clinch?
Popeye waving Cey around was a welcome sight. This was a great summer for me as I was 13 years old and ready to see the Cubs play in the postseason. I had only been watching the Cubs since 1976 but it seemed like forever.
