In third grade I finished my assignment early in typing class and opened up solitaire, and the teacher yelled at me and accused me of "getting on the internet" and switched my grade to an F and I went home crying. My mom helped me stand up for myself and explain that solitaire was not the internet and i got my grade back.
High school was filled with searching "cool math gams" to bypass the block on the word "games" and playing BTD3 every class. Also I was the one to introduce Happy Wheels to my school which felt awesome.

The story with Lackluster took me way back. Back in like 2010 I was muckin' around on my Xbox 360 with this new game my mom had bought me, Rainbow Six Vegas 2 (god I miss that game) and I met this guy who was in his early 40's if I recall correctly in a matchmade round of Terrorist Hunt. Despite the titanic age gap he added me as a friend (probably cause he found it... adorable? that I was enthralled with his stories of him during Desert Storm) and after a few weeks introduced me to his circle that he played weekly mini-tournaments with and wanted me brought in. Gods those tournaments were so fun. We'd do dumb shit like no hiding behind cover and always had to be moving with only the revolver or only hip firing an LMG.
We went our seperate ways something like 12 years ago and now I wonder how he's doing these days.

I sometimes checked out other stuff like GameFAQs (cuz my dad and I played Xbox), Yahoo answers, and RUclips when that was made. The best moment was when we learned how to use floppy disks, CDs, and USBs in computer class. We were allowed to play music if we brought our own CD, iPod, or USB, so my dad downloaded Billy Talent and Three Days Grace for me on a USB. • @jaymzx0
    @jaymzx0 4 месяца назад +2

This was wholesome af man. We all have these small inflection points in our lives that ever so subtly change the course of where we go. Sometimes you meet or find inspiration from others that just happen to be in the right place at the right time. When you think back on what brought you to where you are now, and you realize what little seemingly unimportant or small things had to happen to get you there (not necessarily success, but maybe even the neighborhood where you live or job you have) it absolutely breaks your brain.
A while ago I had a similar walk down memory lane, so to speak. I'm past the age my dad was when I was born, so I now wonder how the hell he held things together as well as he did. And he had a kid. I don't have a kid and I don't think I could keep it together as well as he did.
Anyway, pops was a trucker. Mom didn't like being alone for weeks on end so he quit trucking and drove a city bus. I guess he mouthed off at the wrong person and got canned. Driving is all he could really do, but he got a job installing alarm systems in houses and businesses. He had to figure out electronics really quickly, so he got some of the books by Forrest Mims from Radio Shack. They were great as they had little hand-drawn cartoons of electrons and all that.
So the alarm installer gig didn't work out and dad gave me all his electronics books. I fell in love with them and my parents got me those '200 in one' electronics kits from Radio Shack as my 'one big Christmas gift' and I loved them. They ignited a curiosity in me and because I was a big ass dork who got his fat ass kicked at school every day, I decided to bring one of my projects to work on in the library. The head of the district computer department was there setting up some new computers and asked me about what I was doing. He was interested so he talked to my folks and he gave me an old IBM PC XT computer that was like a decade old. Dude it was slow and could only run Windows 3.1 in black and white but I was hooked. It would die from a failed PSU, I would fix it. I kept it going and learned a lot.
Later on in life I chose IT for a career and have been working as a systems administrator for quite a while now. I enjoy what I do, I'm paid well, and my folks are proud of me. All that started because pops mouthed off at work and got shitcanned, then quit another job because he hated it. If he had of just kept his mouth shut, it's entirely possible I would be an accountant or some shit right now. And I'm thankful for it. I realize a lot of people stuck their neck out for me over the years, and I didn't appreciate it then. It's only in recent years that I've actually reflected on it and it really makes me want to be a positive influence. Maybe I'll be that inflection point for someone some day. Maybe they'll think of me fondly long after I'm gone. Maybe I will unknowingly give someone that boost they need in their life. I can hope. I don't believe in the woo woo BS but if you put positive stuff out there, maybe positive things will happen. Not necessarily for you, but maybe someone else.
I really enjoyed this vid man. Thanks for putting it up even if you thought it was corny. You put it up for a reason that was important to you, and I hope you were able to find satisfaction in it.

I legit almost cried hearing about the whole Lackluster "saga" if you want to call it that. I feel like a lot of early internet goblins had someone like that. That unifies us, as well as Ray William Johnson.
Legit, because of him, I'd subbed to the colossus known as Penguinz0 due to some vid where Ray talked about his QWOP gameplay. Once I had subbed, I'd just started binge watching his vids and between then and now I'd hardly miss an upload. I dropped off with =3, but I never dropped watching Charlie, and got to experience his face reveal and shift in content, and I feel weirdly proud of the dude I've literally never met in my life lol

This is the realest reminiscence I've heard in a long time. Our class bugs were mealworms that we got to observe becoming darkling beetles. We took care of those bad boys in a huge glass punch bowl for two months, and every time we found one dead it broke our little hearts. Dad and I had to move eventually, and the teacher (Ms. Izzy) gave me the bowl as a parting gift, with six beetles left. She let me have her number and told me to keep her updated on the little guys.
You should've seen little Amber clutching this big-ass punch bowl full of oatmeal in her lap, sobbing like crazy as she rode away from that school. Thankfully, dad was kind enough to let the rest of the beetles go naturally, and he let me call Ms. Izzy when I was ready. Most of the class was there and everyone was fighting for the phone, and we must've spent an hour chatting on and on. Poor Ms. Izzy ran out of minutes on her phone and had to cut it early, but she said I could keep the bowl.
I still have that bowl, and research has shown a similar one from the same company would be about $200 in today money. The memories make mine priceless, though

As someone born in 2000, the internet was mostly playing flash games and cool math games (like fireboy and watergirl) with my brother and roblox after school on our parents extra laptops. Once Minecraft youtubers blew up around 2012 they had a chokehold on a generation, and then the most influential on my life in terms of humor and entertainment was Vanoss Gaming and that whole friend group from 2014 through 2018 when I went to college. Its weird to think about but really I grew up with them in a way and now most of them are in their 30’s married and having kids. It’s weird but thinking about it makes me smile. I grew up with a lot of internet things that were very specific to my country, but among the more international things, I remember playing browser games like Bootleggers and such. And any flash animation or game that featured George W. Bush doing dumb shit was always a hit, and something I just remember from that era. Though I think the point in time I'm the most nostalgic about is when I was in High School. World of Warcraft was my life back then, and I spent a lot of time hanging out on my Guild's forum (I have been in that guild, and its "post-wow" discord community form for like 17 years at this point) where we shared a lot of different internet funny stuff and other interesting bits. The Powerthirst videos from College Humor were among my favorites. And of course the good old "Half-Life - Full Life Consequences" RUclips machinima (would you call it that?) - I occasionally quote it to this day.

Back somewhere in either 1999 or 2000, when I was in middle school, I would chat with random people I would find in AOL chatrooms, which I am amazed did not go for worse me. I remember talking to a woman who was in her mid 20's at the time who I really liked talking to, who didn't understand my attempts at using primitive internet slang, saying she preferred to use proper punctuation, grammar and spelling, even in chatrooms, mostly out of habit.
I adopted the habit and 25 years later, I still type like this.

We didn't have proper computer and internet until I was like in high school aroynd 2010-2011 era, and even then the internet was like a cheap data stick that's like a few hours of internet for the equivalent of a dollar. So me and my siblings, to save internrt, would load up a knock off Smash game on Y8 games, abd then turn the data off. That way it doesn't consume the internet and we can still play the game so long as no one refreshed the page. It was 4 of us huddled around a small laptop, the controls refigured so all of us can play on a laptop's keyboard.

But I still keep in touch with people I met online over 20 years ago. So that's neat.

Like many, I found ya via Internet Historian/Incognito - had found myself quite favoring the 'episodes' you were on. Quickly found my way here, and have been more than happy to watch your content ever since. My friend showed me a lot of stuff on ebaumsworld. I was particular to albino black sheep. I remember seeing animations to the old lemon demon songs. (Ultimate showdown, I've got some falling to do, etc) or watching and rewatching salad fingers. I was also real big on Gaiaonline. I used to do art of people's avis. Or go fishing. It was good times. In highschool during classes that gave me computer access I would play portal the flash version. To this day it's the only portal game I've ever played.

The story about Lackluster reminds me of the middle-aged woman who was basically my Neopets mentor. Had all the rare paintbrushes and pet-pets and knew all the tips and tricks, spent Neopoints like they were nothing... She was just there to have a good time and help us do the same.

Kingdomofloathing was so amazing! I played so much of that game in middle school, even played for a bit recently! Lando
Ytmnd was also there for me X 3
Ebaums world too, but then, as is now, I don't like mean humor 🤷‍♂️
Also remember the OG Tanks? It was basically a two player geometry game X D so fun tho

Early internet was definitely a wild time. I remember being a dumb kid and diving into AOL chatrooms and just trolling. Having friends send me to crazy sites like Rotten, Rate my poo, and more. My parents were oblivious and basically let me have free reign. That said, flash games were where I was mostly (ZachAttack, CartoonNetwork, and Nickelodeon).

My mum was a bit over protective so I don’t remember much from the 90’s but I remember playing these maths games on the school computer (our class had one) in grade two. When I got older I loved going on funnyjunk or stick death after school.

When we were kids my friends and I loved the flash games on Miniclip. I still have the soundtrack to Super Extreme 5 Minute Shoot 'Em Up, it goes so hard for just a random flash game.

I remember my first AFK moment. I was on some furry mud playing "Truth or RP". I picked RP and they wanted me to tell eveyone what is "yiffing" You know there is a help feature in the mud that you can look up terms? "help yiff" = 'The sound a fox makes" That was no help for somone who has been in the mud for less than a week:P
Funny enough I didn't know what it REALLY meant for a few weeks. Honestly? I don't remember what I said I just know I was to embarrassed to go back for months.

I went to an afterschool daycare facility for youths Pre-K to 17 on the southside of Chicago with a computer lab, and we had to type our name 100 times into a Word document before we were allowed to go onto the internet. The 17 year olds were the first to find out about copying and pasting and passed down the intel to younger and younger groups of kids. This helped all of us maximize our time on NewGrounds, Cartoon Network Games, Disney Channel Games, CrazyMonkey Games, Armor Games, Addicting Games, Habbo Hotel, and WWE chat rooms. There was also one room in the building that the oldheads hung out in and they brought their own copy of Starcraft that we all huddled around to watch someone play. Only a handful of kids new the cheat codes for Starcraft so it was always good to keep them around. There was also another room that had like a PC version of Super Mario? Like the OG one but somehow on PC with some slightly different coloration and additional mushroom types? Idk, but that was a hub for kids just being kids after school and on the internet under slight adult supervision. Great video btw Summy
