Finally the best pianist on RUclips getting recognition, it’s a crime how under rated he is. He’s has by far the biggest repertoire at the highest level and is a professional pianist (Sung Chang)
I would have to disagree with that he's the best pianist on youtube for me anyway, I think Nimrod and in general how he plays slow pieces is a very strong weakness that I would suggest needs work. His emotional understanding is great but the balance isn't fantastic in terms of chords, plus his left thumb seems to drop a bit much especially in Nimrod. Fast stuff can't fault him really. But I think he has a pretty noticeable weakness. If it is just interpretation then I can't lie he's disrespecting everything a composer writes and being a composer I wouldn't be happy if he played a piece of mine like he just play Nimrod. Just my opinion.
What i expected: a Normal piano reaktion What i recieved: Information about the size of bees and the ok to drink and drive😂 Jokes aside great video as aslways. keep it up
I wonder why he isn't playing his chords together. His left hand thumb is also too heavy. If it is a style choice, personally I think it ruins Nimrod which is a chordal piece and wrote like that by the composer. It's not just that piece either from what I can gather. Would never have guessed he was professional based on how he played Nimrod to be honest. Just my opinion.
Finally, we recognise the best pianist on RUclips. One of the underrated pianist. I remember his la campanella 1838 original version, it was splendid to watch. He is a concert pianist and one of the best. A very good review to be honest
My piano teacher pointed out that many doctoral students at conservatories in Poland tend to play the melody slightly delayed compared to the bass notes. I've started applying it to the nocturnes I'm currently working on, and to be honest, it makes a great difference when done correctly. I'm assuming it's also a technique Traum mastered, and I really enjoy his performances. Again, thank you, Matthew, for such a great analysis!
i just wanted to let you know, all the "wrong notes" on the midi aren't because he pressed the wrong notes, but because keyboards are sensitive and it shows that note being played, but because he didn't actually press the wrong note it doesn't sound wrong. he didnt edit it out.
That is the greatest thing you could do !! I wish you could react and analyse Traum's performance of Liszt's Etude 1838 "arpeggio" and Paganini/Liszt Etude no 6. I struggle a lot to understand the rythm and to be accurate. (And maybe his amazing performance of the Mephisto Waltz too ;) All are beautiful captivating pieces you could react to :)
I think perhaps he is slightly depressing some keys enough to trigger the midi tracking software but not fully enough to trigger the note to sound (or at least not sound very loudly). I think it's good for him to leave it in, it shows a level of authenticity in the performance and that even professionals hit wrong notes. As many commenters have said the level of musicality and shear volume of difficult pieces on his youtube channel is insane. His performances of Liszt and Chopin are some of my favourites.
Once you pointed out those broken chords in the last piece, I couldn't unhear it, and it bothered me a bit too. Sometimes I understand, but it did feel a tad too frequent. I love these videos where you break down pieces and explain choices, dynamics, intent etc. Thanks for another good one, Matthew!
Would love to see you make a sort of comparison between rousseau kassia and traum in a common piece they all played and give your opinion. Kassia is a very good youtuber pianist and has a lot of piano covers if you want to react to her playing aswell
For me this is like a deja vu from like one year ago when i watched TwoSet and how they reacted to different performances of that piece on violing at TV shows 😅 Not the thing i knew i needed but couldnt cancel watching those videos.
Thank you for doing a video about Traum can you maybe do a video on his Scarbo by Ravel or Islamey by Balakirev that would be so fun to watch. And the video is great.
I would say that there is a fair chance that it is sped up, but I wouldn't accuse him of it outright, without first taking some data. You make precisely the right point in this video, key rebound speed, and nobody could hit that maximum exactly without missing notes, anyway, for minor variances in timing that would exceed that speed on individual notes. If I knew the instrument, as an engineer, I would just measure the key rebound speed of that particular instrument, and if he exceeded it, it's fake. You could also make an electrically actuated key depressor and just increase the depressiion frequency until you got speaking failures if you wanted to do a more dynamic test. I don't know that timing device he is using, but it would be pretty easy to split screen it in, on edit, or if possible to get to the guts, just reprogram it, or put a slower crystal in, or whatever, to make it read slow, so that when the video is accelerated, it would look temporally correct. I can tell you that the one Cateen does on the toy piano IS NOT sped up, because firstly, he wouldn't do that, and secondly, you can see him working really really hard, and missing some notes at the top, which is what I, personally, would expect would happen from a stellar, world class pianist attempting this stunt, which is all that it is, really. Just a, 'can I do it' exercise, of no intrinsic value, IMO. I had another thought, which is, IIRC, the hammer is directly coupled to the key on a traditional piano (which his isn't, but to your statement), so in theory, you could hit the key again at partial rebound and make the string actuate again. The energy required to do that over an entire piece would be immense, though. Think about the energy required to push a car 20', and then think about starting that car, going opposite the finish line, at half the speed you can manage to generate over the 20', from a stop, having to slow it to a stop and push it back. I think that gets the point across. Also, modulating loudness with ANY sort of accuracy while doing that consistently would be VERY difficult, because minor variations in the starting points of hammer position vs when the key was again struck would make the force required non constant. I walked by a bunch of engineers collectively scratching their heads over a test failure while looking at the hardware, and said, why don't you just hook up a damned scope, and SEE what is wrong? Sometimes the obvious escapes all of us.
It is! With the voicing of the chords in the prelude sometimes your right hand has a black note under the thumb with a white note in the left underneath the right hand and then they swap..which means many players will play it by swapping which hand is on top 😊
What different worlds we live in, You have obviously never been to the local boozer on a friday night and seen people drunk, lol most of them can't even say Rachmaninoff or get into a taxi.

Hi guys, I'm really interested in starting to play the piano. I have one, but I don't know how to start, what songs are good to start with, or anything like that, I only know how to read sheet music because I learned it in school. Does anyone know of an app or something that would help me get started? I can't afford lessons. Thank you
Not available anymore but it used to be a program that utilizes ai and realistic bodies to create piano concerts that look surprisingly real@@matticawood
8:58 you are wrong he does not play wrong keys, it's just a sensor sensitivity, so it's picking up all the ghost notes, that everybody has from time to time. So even if you see there are some extra notes or some missing, it's just because he is lazy to edit it out, like Kassia, or Roussau. But I can't hear any wrong notes, can you?
I did not restore the OS only for edge and YT. something dirty is going on, while using big data arrays I found that simuktaneously running and filling a lot of memory programs crashed as if they were invading each others reserved memory space, something I do regularly and never crashed this way. Something odd is going odd in MS updates, really odd.
Hey Matthew, I would love to see your reaction to another channel called Phyxinon and his piano covers for a rhythm game called Deemo :) Marigold, Entrance and ANiMA, would be what I consider the most difficult pieces he's played (and also his most viewed ones). Otherwise would love to hear your thoughts on his skills as a pianist :D
Traum is, for me, the best pianist I've found on RUclips. I do believe most of his chording is intentionally dynamic. It's a flavour to the piece as any cover should be. Also, the prescriptivists might disagree but, to any rendition of a classical piece beyond a study level these dynamics are what make a work yours as opposed to the original artists work. Essentially the why is because he can and wants to. All the greatest pianists of this generation have a signature style or dynamic when playing pieces imo.
I think you are probably right in saying he is just using some expressive freedom. I agree that every pianist should have that freedom to interpret the piece how they want to (although I know a lot of musicians that will disagree with that). However, I do think if you are going to make choices that change the music rather than interpret the music…then there needs to be some idea that will justify that decision 😊
What happened to the reactions to Black MIDIs? Those videos are great. I'd like you to react to The Nuker II, III and IV, they're really good songs and I know you'll like them 🥺.
Sometimes, the extra notes only pop on the visualiser when he slighly touches them without properly playing them. You can see that a lot when do a lot of jumps with both hands like in TE Appassionata no 10 or Mephisto waltz. Sometimes the visualiser is more "aware" of micro movements of thrle keys next to the ones he plays. A great review overall, I absolutely love Traum's repertoire and musicality, he's in my opinion the best pianist on RUclips
