My favourite aircraft of modern times is the A340-600, specifically that of Virgin Atlantic. Aside from the fuel economy issues it’s without doubt the most aesthetically pleasing & comfortable aircraft I’ve ever flown in. A real beauty!
Nice video, thanks. The A340 remains a good option for economy class travellers as the 2-4-2 layout generally means less chance of a middle seat compared to the 3-3-3 or congested 3-4-3 of newer twin-engine types.
I flew with the A340 from Zurich to Hongkong last year and it was great! Even though we’ve lost one engine during the flight, it was still a pretty comfy 12 hour flight!
I flew on a A340 from Iberia airlines in the begin 2000 to Sao Paulo, Brazil. Great comfortable plane, i loved it! It is probably my favorite over the 747, 777 and 787 which are great planes as well. The A340 was just a bit smoother and more silent. The 787 has better air quality in the cabin. This year i flew a Lufthansa 747 from Frankfurt after 45 years ago flying on it with Air India, great nostalgy and what a plane.. love it as well, feels like a tank in the sky.
Flew on both A340-600 and A340-300 when Cathay Pacific had them in operation. In their case A340-600 was used to do 4th longest flight in 2005 CX831 16hr 20 JFK-HKG. While my father did TG791 A340-500 3rd longest flight in 2008, JFK-BKK. Without the A340-600/-500 there would still be a One-Stop from Hong Kong/Singapore to EWR/JFK.
Flew on Lufthansa a340-600 from Boston to Munich in July 2009. The lavatories were a floor down in the cargo area. It was extremely nice, very unique and very spacious. Definitely one of my best flight experiences.
As of December 2023, 127 Airbus A340 are still operational across 4 variants : 8 Airbus A340-200 (this is the rarest A340 variant btw) 64 Airbus A340-300 17 Airbus A340-500 and 38 Airbus A340-600
I had the chance to fly Plus Ultra SCL-MAD on A340-300 Back then I had no idea about planes but I recognize the large body and the 4 engines. It was a smooth ride but the lack of on board entertainment made it a long trip.
This video brings back fond memories.. It was on Sri Lankan Airlines that I first flew on the A340 in 1994.. I believe it was the first Asian airline to operate this aircraft,
Just booked a flight from Australia to Trieste, on my way there A340-300 back A340-600 both Lufthansa. this will be my 2nd on a -300 and first on a -600 "the pencil" chose it over the 747-8
Flew on A340 300 with Air Mauritius in 1999 between LHR and MRU and Thai Airways A340 300 between LHR and BKK in 2012. I found them ok, but slightly less roomy than Boeing 777 300ER.
Flown 340 with finnair 300 hel-jhk, nice. Then Lufthansa 600 cpt-fra, very good. Last flight was hifly 500 jfk-hel, wetleased for finnair, terrible... Great planes, but off the pace after etops 330 etc.
which A350??😂. I think go to planespotters for a reliable update on fleets of airlines . SAA only has one 340-300 and 2 A330-300 for their long haul routes. They only operated A350 for a short period before the bankruptcy. Most don’t even remember that they did have a350.
It actually did because it actually drove Boeing to develop the 777 to compete, the A340 really opened up the “mini jumbo” market. Long, high capacity single deck planes. The A340 also opened up ultra long range flights too. At the time, it had the longest range.

It is a stylish jet and one of my favourites along with the VC10 and the Lockheed Tristar.
Clearly the most gracious passenger jet ever designed
Please buy a RollsRoyce family car next time….Rolks Royce is very gracious

Very true!
@@AirwaysMagazine This plane looks like a D.C 8 on steroids
As of December 2023, Lufthansa is also operating the A340-300 from FRA to Rio, Cape Town, New York, Denver, Seattle, even Beijing and Teheran.
I flew with the A340 from Zurich to Hongkong last year and it was great! Even though we’ve lost one engine during the flight, it was still a pretty comfy 12 hour flight!
You lost one engine?? What??
@@510ghostboy yeah, thanks god only one of 4 🙏
I took LHs A340 from Frankfurt to Montreal and was amazed how comfy such an old plane can be.

Wonderful aircraft. Flew many times with Emirates on its Melbourne/Sydney--Dubai rotes in the 2000's.
I flew the A340 with Thai-International in 2010 from Sydney to Paris.🛫
As of December 2023, 127 Airbus A340 are still operational across 4 variants :
8 Airbus A340-200 (this is the rarest A340 variant btw)
64 Airbus A340-300
17 Airbus A340-500 and
38 Airbus A340-600
Just love this plane 🍻
I am an A340 Lover . Thanks for this interesting and fine video .
Amazing video!
You forgot EP-MJA; Mahan Air have recently begun operating the A340-200 again. This is the only A340-200 left in commercial service I believe.
I also saw an A340-200 in flightradar24
Flew London- Johannesburg on Virgin. A comfortable airplane
Was just talking about Edelweiss A340 service from LAS. There’s a large board outside Harry Reid T3 if I remember correctly
I flew Lufthansa a340 from Curaçao back in 1997, I liked its roomy 2-4-2 layout.
I had the chance to fly Plus Ultra SCL-MAD on A340-300
Back then I had no idea about planes but I recognize the large body and the 4 engines. It was a smooth ride but the lack of on board entertainment made it a long trip.
Air Jamaica had 2 A340's used on London & toronto . They the most beautiful aircraft in the skies .
This video brings back fond memories.. It was on Sri Lankan Airlines that I first flew on the A340 in 1994.. I believe it was the first Asian airline to operate this aircraft,
When they still had the aircraft, I flew on Philippine Airlines LAX-CEB and MNL-LAX and on Cathay Pacific HKG-CEB, on -300 variants.
LH also uses it for their flights to Denver as well, but only when their a350 is undergoing maintenance.
Just booked a flight from Australia to Trieste, on my way there A340-300 back A340-600 both Lufthansa. this will be my 2nd on a -300 and first on a -600 "the pencil" chose it over the 747-8
The -200 and -300 version got the nickname "5APU" in China For having 4 unusually weak engine compared to other widebody jet.
Flew on A340 300 with Air Mauritius in 1999 between LHR and MRU and Thai Airways A340 300 between LHR and BKK in 2012.
I found them ok, but slightly less roomy than Boeing 777 300ER.
The A330/340 Family has a fuselage diameter of 222 inches, compared with 244 inches for the 777 family.
Flew on A340 with Turkish Airlines, 9 yrs ago
U don't pronounce Edelweiss correctly
Flown 340 with finnair 300 hel-jhk, nice. Then Lufthansa 600 cpt-fra, very good. Last flight was hifly 500 jfk-hel, wetleased for finnair, terrible... Great planes, but off the pace after etops 330 etc.
0:27 an engineering marvel? Have you not seen those underpowered CFM’s under those wings?
Best airplane, i dont know why they stopped.
You forgot that Lufthansa operates a340s from Frankfurt to Detroit
I have flown on A340 with Turkish Airlines.
Conviasa got another A342 and still in use
I flew on Kam air a340 this yeat
Just letting you know Afghanistan Kam Air is not a national carrier. It is a privately owned company.
Sorry but u forgot South African Airways
They aren't using them since the bankruptcy and restructuring. Only have the A350 now.
which A350??😂. I think go to planespotters for a reliable update on fleets of airlines . SAA only has one 340-300 and 2 A330-300 for their long haul routes. They only operated A350 for a short period before the bankruptcy. Most don’t even remember that they did have a350.
He mentioned SAA but I had to rewind a few times for me to hear. I think he meant SAA has some airframes that flew for another airline
And Sri Lankan Airlines
@ofentse2010 what’s the time stamp
black soot inside and outside those cfm engines
Did u mention Lufthansa route to Chennai ?
They fly the a340-300 which will be replaced by 787-9 lh758
Engineering marvel? It changed aviation history how? Nice plane, but bro, trim the hyperbole. Otherwise nice video.

Lufthansa fly to Rio de Janeiro from Frankfurt w A340-300
i think azerbaijan also has a340 too
Conviasa still flies one 340-200
Flew the A340 in Virgin Upper Class. Didn't think it was a good aircraft for that class of service.
You forgot about Spirit Air
Also Swiss
lufthansa a340-600 muc-mia the 2nd of April of 2024
European Cargo have at least 7 A340-600 at EGHH
It's probably the most under power commercial airplane ever
You’d have to own an oil well to profitably operate the A340……..why doesn’t Airbus keep producing these airplanes???……produce 500 more!!!
And Lufthansa
You forgot Air Serbia
Eyerun?😭
Yea who still flies the tractor of the skies? They must be somewhere in Africa and South East Asia.
Bob
You FUCKING forgot swiss air
South African?
Uh
Istanbul is a European airport, not a Middle-Eastern.
underpowered trash plane
